The agro-industrial system regional sustainable development, a coherent strategy

    Get PDF
The agro-industrial system represents annually circa 3,6 x 109 € in the formation of the Centro Region of Portugal gross income and that accounts for 39% of the Portuguese overall return for this sector. Given this dynamics it is of utmost importance to perform a consistent strategy to promote the sustainable growth of this regional system income. Therefore, the CERNAS/IPC research unit has developed an integrated approach bringing together several regional actors under a networking logic that links the industrial needs with the academia R&D capabilities, and of capacity building and entrepreneurship (2011-2013). This strategy is rooted in the InovCluster, where CERNAS leads two anchor projects, the in_AGRI and the ECODEEP, and collaborates with a third one, the AGRITRAINING. The in_AGRI aims the upgrade of the system value chains by bridging the academia with the industry in a series of workshops, supported with a knowledge transfer platform and a network of research facilities, and ECODEEP will develop eco-efficiency tools, based on a LCA approach to enhance the overall sustainability by improving practises and find new solutions within an industrial ecology framework. The AGRITRAINING surveys the training needs of the system, looking forward to complement the actual capacity building achieved by the Master courses in Food Engineering and Environmental Management. In addition, an advanced training in Environmental Entrepreneurship is being implemented, and an Innovation Management for SME’s program is being designed, promoting a cultural change towards the sustainable welfare of our present and future generations.InAGRI – Proj. n.º 3494 (Mais Centro/PORC); EcoDeep – Proj. n.º 18643 (SIAC/COMPETE/POFC); InovEnergy– Proj. n.º 18642 (SIAC/COMPETE/POFC); Agritraining – Proj. n.º 8310 (SIAC/COMPETE/POFC); GovCluster –Proj. n.º 8063 (SIAC/COMPETE/POFC

Risk-sensitive response of soaring birds to crosswind over dangerous sea highlights age-specific differences in migratory performance.

Challenges imposed by geographical barriers during migration are selective agents for animals. Juvenile soaring landbirds often cross large water bodies along their migratory path, where they lack updraft support and are vulnerable to harsh weather. However, the consequences of inexperience in accomplishing these water crossings remain largely unquantified. To address this knowledge gap, we tracked the movements of juvenile and adult black kites Milvus migrans over the Strait of Gibraltar using high-frequency tracking devices in variable crosswind conditions. We found that juveniles crossed under higher crosswind speeds and at wider sections of the strait compared with adults during easterly winds, which represent a high risk owing to their high speed and steady direction towards the Atlantic Ocean. Juveniles also drifted extensively with easterly winds, contrasting with adults who strongly compensated for lateral displacement through flapping. Age differences were inconspicuous during winds with a west crosswind speed component, as well as for airspeed modulation in all wind conditions. We suggest that the suboptimal sea-crossing behaviour of juvenile black kites may impact their survival rates, either by increasing chances of drowning owing to exhaustion or by depleting critical energy reserves needed to accomplish their first migration

    Get PDF
In pandemic times, like the one we are witnessing for COVID-19, the discussion about new efficient and rapid techniques for diagnosis of diseases is more evident. In this mini-review, we present to the virological scientific community the potential of attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy as a diagnosis technique. Herein, we explain the operation of this technique, as well as its advantages over standard methods. In addition, we also present the multivariate analysis tools that can be used to extract useful information from the data towards classification purposes. Tools such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Linear and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (LDA and QDA) are covered, including examples of published studies. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy are emphasized, as well as future prospects in this field of study that is only growing. One of the main aims of this paper is to encourage the scientific community to explore the potential of this spectroscopic tool to detect changes in biological samples such as those caused by the presence of viruses

AbstractThe sperm in vitro binding assay in homologous oocytes can be used to estimate the boar fertility potential, but its usefulness may be limited by laboratorial structure and oocytes availability. This study aimed at determining the effect of distinct methods of oocytes conditioning and incubation media for the in vitro penetration (IVP) test. Oocytes used in the IVP test were: fresh and conditioned in PBS (T1); cooled and conditioned in PBS at 5°C for 48h (T2); or stored in ovaries frozen at −20°C (T3). For each treatment, two incubation media were tested at 39°C for 6h: modified TRIS buffer medium (mTBM); or Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) extender. The responses of interest were: IVP and polyspermy rates; and the number of penetrating spermatozoa per oocyte. All responses observed with incubation in BTS were inferior to those observed with incubation in mTBM (P<0.0001). When incubation was done in mTBM, none of the responses differed across treatments (P>0.05). However, when incubation was in BTS, all the three responses were superior for T1 than for T2 and T3 (P<0.05). Thus, the IVP test may be conducted with ovaries either cooled or recovered from frozen ovaries with results similar to those observed with fresh oocytes, if incubation is done in mTBM

Low- water maps of the groundwater table in the central Amazon by satellite altimetry

Groundwater plays a fundamental role in rainforest environments, as it is connected with rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and helps to support wildlife habitat during dry periods. Groundwater reservoirs are however excessively difficult to monitor, especially in large and remote areas. Using concepts from groundwater-surface water interactions and ENVISAT altimetry data, we evaluated the topography of the groundwater table during low-water periods in the alluvial plain of the central Amazon. The water levels are monitored using an unprecedented coverage of 491 altimetric stations over surface waters in the central Amazon. The groundwater table maps interpolated at spatial resolutions ranging from 50 to 100 km are consistent with groundwater wells data. They provide evidence of significant spatiotemporal organization at regional scale: heterogeneous flow from the hillslope toward the main rivers is observed, as well as strong memory effects and contrasted hydrological behaviors between the North and the South of the Amazon
