The flavour singlet mesons in QCD
We study the flavour singlet mesons from first principles using lattice QCD.
We explore the splitting between flavour singlet and non-singlet for vector and
axial mesons as well as the more commonly studied cases of the scalar and

The visibility of environmental rights in the EU legal order: eurolegalism in action?
The current article responds to a key puzzle and a question. First, why, given the potential for ‘rights talk’ that has been seen in other countries and other policy areas, have environmental rights in the EU legal order been relatively invisible until recently? No equity, no triple aim: strategic proposals to advance health equity in a volatile policy environment
Health professionals, including social workers, community health workers, public health workers, and licensed health care providers, share common interests and responsibilities in promoting health equity and improving social determinants of health—the conditions in which we live, work, play, and learn. This article summarizes underlying causes of health inequity and comparatively poor health outcomes in the U.S. It describes barriers to realizing the hope embedded in the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that moving away from fee-for-service payments will naturally drive care upstream as providers respond to greater financial risk for the health of their patients by undertaking greater prevention efforts. The article asserts that health equity should serve as the guiding framework for achieving the Triple Aim of health care reform. It outlines practical opportunities for improving care and for promoting stronger efforts to address social determinants of health. These proposals include developing a dashboard of measures to assist providers committed to health equity and community-based prevention and to promote institutional accountability for addressing socio-economic factors that influence health
The One-loop Open Superstring Massless Five-point Amplitude with the Non-Minimal Pure Spinor Formalism
We compute the massless five-point amplitude of open superstrings using the
non-minimal pure spinor formalism and obtain a simple kinematic factor in pure
spinor superspace, which can be viewed as the natural extension of the
kinematic factor of the massless four-point amplitude. It encodes bosonic and
fermionic external states in supersymmetric form and reduces to existing
bosonic amplitudes when expanded in components, therefore proving their
equivalence. We also show how to compute the kinematic structures involving

On spin-1 massive particles coupled to a Chern-Simons field
We study spin one particles interacting through a Chern-Simons field. In the
Born approximation, we calculate the two body scattering amplitude considering
three possible ways to introduce the interaction: (a) a Proca like model
minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons field, (b) the model obtained from (a) by
replacing the Proca's mass by a Chern-Simons term and (c) a complex
Maxwell-Chern-Simons model minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons field. In the
low energy regime the results show similarities with the Aharonov-Bohm
scattering for spin 1/2 particles. We discuss the one loop renormalization
program for the Proca's model. In spite of the bad ultraviolet behavior of the
matter field propagator, we show that, up to one loop the model is power
counting renormalizable thanks to the Ward identities satisfied by the

The cancer gene WWOX behaves as an inhibitor of SMAD3 transcriptional activity via direct binding
Background: The WW domain containing protein WWOX has been postulated to behave as a tumor suppressor in breast and other cancers. Expression of this protein is lost in over 70% of ER negative tumors. This prompted us to investigate the phenotypic and gene expression effects of loss of WWOX expression in breast cells.
Methods: Gene expression microarrays and standard in vitro assays were performed on stably silenced WWOX (shRNA) normal breast cells. Bioinformatic analyses were used to identify gene networks and transcriptional regulators affected by WWOX silencing. Co-immunoprecipitations and GST-pulldowns were used to demonstrate a direct interaction between WWOX and SMAD3. Reporter assays, ChIP, confocal microscopy and in silico analyses were employed to determine the effect of WWOX silencing on TGFβ-signaling.
Results: WWOX silencing affected cell proliferation, motility, attachment and deregulated expression of genes involved in cell cycle, motility and DNA damage. Interestingly, we detected an enrichment of targets activated by the SMAD3 transcription factor, including significant upregulation of ANGPTL4, FST, PTHLH and SERPINE1 transcripts. Importantly, we demonstrate that the WWOX protein physically interacts with SMAD3 via WW domain 1. Furthermore, WWOX expression dramatically decreases SMAD3 occupancy at the ANGPTL4 and SERPINE1 promoters and significantly quenches activation of a TGFβ responsive reporter. Additionally, WWOX expression leads to redistribution of SMAD3 from the nuclear to the cytoplasmic compartment. Since the TGFβ target ANGPTL4 plays a key role in lung metastasis development, we performed a meta-analysis of ANGPTL4 expression relative to WWOX in microarray datasets from breast carcinomas. We observed a significant inverse correlation between WWOX and ANGPTL4. Furthermore, the WWOX lo/ANGPTL4hi cluster of breast tumors is enriched in triple-negative and basal-like sub-types. Tumors with this gene expression signature could represent candidates for anti-TGFβ targeted therapies.
Conclusions: We show for the first time that WWOX modulates SMAD3 signaling in breast cells via direct WW-domain mediated binding and potential cytoplasmic sequestration of SMAD3 protein. Since loss of WWOX expression increases with breast cancer progression and it behaves as an inhibitor of SMAD3 transcriptional activity these observations may help explain, at least in part, the paradoxical pro-tumorigenic effects of TGFβ signaling in advanced breast cancer.Facultad de Ciencias MédicasCentro de Investigaciones Inmunológicas Básicas y Aplicada
Phantom-based study exploring the effects of different scatter correction approaches on the reconstructed images generated by contrast-enhanced stationary digital breast tomosynthesis
Stationary digital breast tomosynthesis (sDBT) is an emerging technology in which the single rotating x-ray tube is replaced by a fixed array of multiple carbon nanotube-enabled sources, providing a higher spatial and temporal resolution. As such, sDBT offers a promising platform for contrast-enhanced (CE) imaging. However, given the minimal enhancement above background with standard operational tube settings and iodine dosing, CE breast imaging requires additional acquisition steps to isolate the iodine signal, using either temporal or dual energy subtraction (TS or DES) protocols. Also, correcting for factors that limit contrast is critical, and scatter and noise pose unique challenges during tomosynthesis. This phantom-based study of CE sDBT compared different postacquisition scatter correction approaches on the quality of the reconstructed image slices. Beam-pass collimation was used to sample scatter indirectly, from which an interpolated scatter map was obtained for each projection image. Scatter-corrected projections provided the information for reconstruction. Comparison between the application of different scatter maps demonstrated the significant effect that processing has on the contrast-to-noise ratio and feature detectability (d′) in the final displayed images and emphasized the critical importance of scatter correction during DES
