    Learning to suspend implicated contrast:The acquisition of <em>ook</em> in Dutch

    Children acquire the meaning of ook ‘also’ in Dutch relatively late ( Bergsma 2006 ), although this focus particle is highly frequent. We argue that this late acquisition is caused by a pragmatic rule: contrastive implicature. We follow Sæbø (2004) , who argues that additives are used because without them, the sentences they appear in would be interpreted as contrastive in relation to the context. Data from a sentence completion task administered to Dutch L1 learners (N = 62, ages 4;0–5;11) show that, on average, four-year-olds do not distinguish sentences with ook from sentences without ook. Five-year-olds do better on sentences with ook but worse on sentences without it. We argue that they have generally acquired contrastive implicature: they apply the correct contrastive interpretation to sentences without ook, but overgeneralize this implicature to sentences with ook, before completely acquiring the meaning of ook

    Biomechanical Analysis of Reducing Sacroiliac Joint Shear Load by Optimization of Pelvic Muscle and Ligament Forces

    Effective stabilization of the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) is essential, since spinal loading is transferred via the SIJ to the coxal bones, and further to the legs. We performed a biomechanical analysis of SIJ stability in terms of reduced SIJ shear force in standing posture using a validated static 3-D simulation model. This model contained 100 muscle elements, 8 ligaments, and 8 joints in trunk, pelvis, and upper legs. Initially, the model was set up to minimize the maximum muscle stress. In this situation, the trunk load was mainly balanced between the coxal bones by vertical SIJ shear force. An imposed reduction of the vertical SIJ shear by 20% resulted in 70% increase of SIJ compression force due to activation of hip flexors and counteracting hip extensors. Another 20% reduction of the vertical SIJ shear force resulted in further increase of SIJ compression force by 400%, due to activation of the transversely oriented M. transversus abdominis and pelvic floor muscles. The M. transversus abdominis crosses the SIJ and clamps the sacrum between the coxal bones. Moreover, the pelvic floor muscles oppose lateral movement of the coxal bones, which stabilizes the position of the sacrum between the coxal bones (the pelvic arc). Our results suggest that training of the M. transversus abdominis and the pelvic floor muscles could help to relieve SI-joint related pelvic pain

    Nostalgia promotes intrinsic motivation and effort in the presence of low interactional justice

    We examined whether nostalgia increases intrinsic motivation in situations of low (vs. high) interactional justice, with downstream implications for work effort. In Study 1, we tested employees of various organizations using experience sampling methodology (ESM). High (vs. low) momentary nostalgia predicted stronger momentary intrinsic motivation, particularly when chronic interactional justice was low (vs. high). In Study 2, another ESM study among employees, we induced nostalgia. Induced nostalgia (vs. control) strengthened momentary work effort, via momentary intrinsic motivation, when chronic interactional justice was low (vs. high). This effect emerged for organizational and personal nostalgia. In Study 3, an experiment, we induced nostalgia and interactional justice. Induced nostalgia (vs. control) increased intrinsic motivation among participants experiencing low (vs. high) interactional justice. This effect of nostalgia was mediated by past-self directedness. In the face of low interactional justice, nostalgia makes employees experience their work as pleasant and motivating, leading them to exert more work effort

    Can a leader be seen as too ethical? The curvilinear effects of ethical leadership

    Ethical leadership predicts important organizational outcomes such as decreased deviant and increased organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). We argued that due to the distinct nature of these two types of employee behaviors, ethical leadership decreases deviance in a linear manner (i.e., more ethical leadership leading to less deviance), but we expected ethical leadership to reveal a curvilinear relationship with respect to OCB. Specifically, we expected that, at lower levels, ethical leadership promotes OCB. However, at high levels, ethical leadership should lead to a decrease in these behaviors. We also examined a mechanism that explains this curvilinear pattern, that is, followers’ perceptions of moral reproach. Our predictions were supported in three organizational field studies and an experiment. These findings offer a better understanding of the processes that underlie the workings of ethical leadership. They also imply a dilemma for organizations in which they face the choice between limiting deviant employee behavior and promoting OCB

    Ranking low, feeling high: how hierarchical position and experienced power promote prosocial behavior in response to procedural justice

    Research shows that power can lead to prosocial behavior by facilitating the behavioral expression of dispositional prosocial motivation. However, it is not clear how power may facilitate responses to contextual factors that promote prosocial motivation. Integrating fairness heuristic theory and the situated focus theory of power, we argue that in particular, organization members in lower (vs. higher) hierarchical positions who simultaneously experience a high (vs. low) sense of power respond with prosocial behavior to 1 important antecedent of prosocial motivation, that is, the enactment of procedural justice. The results from a multisource survey among employees and their leaders from various organizations (Study 1) and an experiment using a public goods dilemma (Study 2) support this prediction. Three subsequent experiments (Studies 3–5) show that this effect is mediated by perceptions of authority trustworthiness. Taken together, this research (a) helps resolve the debate regarding whether power promotes or undermines prosocial behavior, (b) demonstrates that hierarchical position and the sense of power can have very different effects on processes that are vital to the functioning of an organization, and (c) helps solve ambiguity regarding the roles of hierarchical position and power in fairness heuristic theory

    The reliability of the patellotrochlear index on magnetic resonance imaging for measuring patellofemoral height

    Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-and intra-observer reliability of the patellotrochlear index (PTI) on magnetic resonance images (MRI) in patients with patellofemoral pain. The correlation between the PTI measured on MRI and the modified Insall-Salvati (MIS) ratio measured on radiographs was also assessed. Methods: The PTI was assessed on MRI images and the MIS ratio on radiographs of 66 knees of 62 patients. Assessment was performed by two orthopaedic surgeons, one orthopaedic surgery registrar, two radiologists and one radiology registrar. Correlation coefficients, standard errors of measurement and limits of agreement were calculated for the PTI. To assess the association between the PTI and the MIS ratio, the Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. Results: The PTI showed good interobserver reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.73-0.85) and excellent intra-observer reliability (ICC 0.90; 95% CI 0.89-0.91). The standard error of measurement was 0.05 and limits of agreement with the mean +/- 0.09. A very weak and not significant correlation was found between the PTI and the MIS (r = 0.02; P = 0.77). Conclusions: The PTI showed good interobserver reliability and excellent intra-observer reliability. In order to conclude which measurement method of assessing patellar height is truly the most reliable, future studies should investigate agreement parameters (standard error of measurement, limits of agreement) besides solely correlation coefficients. We found a very weak correlation between the PTI and the MIS which suggests that at least one index has poor validity. Future validity studies on indices to assess patellar height are necessary.     Willing and able: action-state orientation and the relation between procedural justice and employee cooperation

    Existing justice theory explains why fair procedures motivate employees to adopt cooperative goals, but it fails to explain how employees strive towards these goals. We study self-regulatory abilities that underlie goal striving; abilities that should thus affect employees’ display of cooperative behavior in response to procedural justice. Building on action control theory, we argue that employees who display effective self-regulatory strategies (action oriented employees) display relatively strong cooperative behavioral responses to fair procedures. A multisource field study and a laboratory experiment support this prediction. A subsequent experiment addresses the process underlying this effect by explicitly showing that action orientation facilitates attainment of the cooperative goals that people adopt in response to fair procedures, thus facilitating the display of actual cooperative behavior. This goal striving approach better integrates research on the relationship between procedural justice and employee cooperation in the self-regulation and the work motivation literature. It also offers organizations a new perspective on making procedural justice effective in stimulating employee cooperation by suggesting factors that help employees reach their adopted goals
