Observation of hypersonic phononic crystal effects in porous silicon superlattices
Brillouin light scattering experiments were carried out on porous silicon superlattices with modulation wavelengths in the range 37–167 nm. Phonon frequencies deduced from the Brillouin spectra show good agreement with those obtained from an elastic continuum model for a system with one-dimensional periodicity. Evidence for the existence of a hypersonic phononic bandgap and zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons is reported
Cotton spinning to climbing gear: practical aspects of design evolution in Lancashire and the North West of England
This article looks at the role of path dependency in the design of outdoor clothing and equipment, from the perspective of changing and overlapping industrial clusters in Lancashire and Sheffield, from the 1960s. It demonstrates that, unlike the fashion market, design in mountaineering clothing and equipment was originally based heavily upon functionality and hence on user innovation. It shows that skills and knowledge which evolved during the industrial revolution, in both industrial areas, were vitally important to the development of internationally competitive mountaineering equipment firms. It was, however, the way in which these sources of knowledge were combined with sporting expertise that contributed to the design of innovative functional products. In addition, fundamental changes occurred in the relationship between manufacturers and their customers and these were vital to the success of this process, marking a departure from past practice
Application of pushbroom altimetry from space using large space antennas
The capabilities of multibeam altimetry are discussed and an interferometric multibeam technique for doing precision altimetry is described. The antenna feed horn arrangement and the resulting footprint lube pattern are illustrated. Plans for a shuttle multibeam altimetry mission are also discussed

Small-grain cultivar performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and/or marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for smallgrain producers
The evolutionary state of short-period magnetic white dwarf binaries
We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of two new short-period low accretion rate magnetic binaries, SDSS J125044.42+154957.3 (Porb= 86 min) and SDSS J151415.65+074446.5 (Porb= 89 min). Both systems were previously identified as magnetic white dwarfs from the Zeeman splitting of the Balmer absorption lines in their optical spectra. Their spectral energy distributions exhibit a large near-infrared excess, which we interpret as a combination of cyclotron emission and possibly a late-type companion star. No absorption features from the companion are seen in our optical spectra. We derive the orbital periods from a narrow, variable Hα emission line which we show to originate on the companion star. The high radial velocity amplitude measured in both systems suggests a high orbital inclination, but we find no evidence for eclipses in our data. The two new systems resemble the polar EF Eri in its prolonged low state and also SDSS J121209.31+013627.7, a known magnetic white dwarf plus possible brown dwarf binary, which was also recovered by our method
Misfit strain relaxation and dislocation formation in supercritical strained silicon on virtual substrates
Relaxation of strained silicon on 20% linear graded virtual substrates was quantified using high resolution x-ray diffraction and a defect etching technique. The thickness of strained silicon was varied between 10 and 180 nm. Relaxation was observed in layers below the critical thickness but increased to only 2% relaxation in the thickest layers even with annealings up to 950 °C. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy revealed stacking faults present in layers thicker than 25 nm, and nucleated 90° Shockley partial dislocations forming microtwins in the thickest layer. These features are implicated in the impediment of the relaxation process
A J-band detection of the donor star in the dwarf nova OY Carinae, and an optical detection of its `iron curtain'
Purely photometric models can be used to determine the binary parameters of
eclipsing cataclysmic variables with a high degree of precision. However, the
photometric method relies on a number of assumptions, and to date there have
been very few independent checks of this method in the literature. We present
time-resolved spectroscopy of the P=90.9 min eclipsing cataclysmic variable OY
Carinae obtained with X-shooter on the VLT, in which we detect the donor star
from K I lines in the J-band. We measure the radial velocity amplitude of the
donor star K2 = 470.0 +/- 2.7 km/s, consistent with predictions based upon the
photometric method (470 +/- 7 km/s). Additionally, the spectra obtained in the
UVB arm of X-shooter show a series of Fe I and Fe II lines with a phase and
velocity consistent with an origin in the accretion disc. This is the first
unambiguous detection at optical wavelengths of the `iron curtain' of disc
material which has been previously reported to veil the white dwarf in this
system. The velocities of these lines do not track the white dwarf, reflecting
a distortion of the outer disc that we see also in Doppler images. This is
evidence for considerable radial motion in the outer disk, at up to 90 km/s

Detection of lithium in nearby young late-M dwarfs
Late M-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood include a mixture of very
low-mass stars and brown dwarfs which is difficult to disentangle due to the
lack of constraints on their age such as trigonometric parallax, lithium
detection and space velocity.
We search for young brown dwarf candidates among a sample of 28 nearby late-M
dwarfs with spectral types between M5.0 and M9.0, and we also search for debris
disks around three of them.
Based on theoretical models, we used the color , the -band absolute
magnitude and the detection of the Li I 6708 doublet line as a strong
constraint to estimate masses and ages of our targets. For the search of debris
disks, we observed three targets at submillimeter wavelength of 850 m.
We report here the first clear detections of lithium absorption in four
targets and a marginal detection in one target. Our mass estimates indicate
that two of them are young brown dwarfs, two are young brown dwarf candidates
and one is a young very low-mass star. The closest young field brown dwarf in
our sample at only 15 pc is an excellent benchmark for further studying
physical properties of brown dwarfs in the range 100150 Myr. We did not
detect any debris disks around three late-M dwarfs, and we estimated upper
