BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries can have negative consequences on the careers of National Football League (NFL) players, however no study has ever analyzed the financial impact of these injuries in this population. PURPOSE: To quantify the impact of ACL injuries on salary and career length in NFL athletes. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Any player in the NFL suffering an ACL injury from 2010 to 2013 was identified using a comprehensive online search. A database of NFL player salaries was used to conduct a matched cohort analysis comparing ACL-injured players with the rest of the NFL. The main outcomes were the percentage of players remaining in the NFL and mean salary at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years after injury. Cohorts were subdivided based on initial salary: group A,2,000,000.Meancumulativeearningswerecalculatedbymultiplyingthepercentageofplayersremainingintheleaguebytheirmeansalariesandcompoundingthiseachseason.RESULTS:NFLathletessuffered219ACLinjuriesfrom2010to2013.The7504otherplayerseasonsintheNFLduringthistimewereusedascontrols.SignificantlyfewerACL−injuredplayersthancontrolsremainedintheNFLateachtimepoint(P3˘c.05).IngroupA,significantlylessACL−injuredplayersremainedintheNFLat1to3seasonsafterinjury(P3˘c.05),andingroupB,significantlylessACL−injuredplayersremainedintheNFLat1and2seasonsafterinjury(P3˘c.05).TherewasnosignificantdecreaseingroupC.PlayersingroupsAandBremainingintheNFLalsohadalowermeansalarythancontrols(P3˘c.05inseason1).Themeancumulativeearningsover4yearsforACL−injuredplayerswas2,000,000. Mean cumulative earnings were calculated by multiplying the percentage of players remaining in the league by their mean salaries and compounding this each season. RESULTS: NFL athletes suffered 219 ACL injuries from 2010 to 2013. The 7504 other player seasons in the NFL during this time were used as controls. Significantly fewer ACL-injured players than controls remained in the NFL at each time point (P \u3c .05). In group A, significantly less ACL-injured players remained in the NFL at 1 to 3 seasons after injury (P \u3c .05), and in group B, significantly less ACL-injured players remained in the NFL at 1 and 2 seasons after injury (P \u3c .05). There was no significant decrease in group C. Players in groups A and B remaining in the NFL also had a lower mean salary than controls (P \u3c .05 in season 1). The mean cumulative earnings over 4 years for ACL-injured players was 2,070,521 less per player than uninjured controls. CONCLUSION: On average, ACL-injured players earned 2,070,521lessthansalary−matchedcontrolsoverthe4yearsafterinjury.Playersinitiallyearninglessthan2,070,521 less than salary-matched controls over the 4 years after injury. Players initially earning less than 2 million per year have lower mean salaries and are less likely to remain in the league than uninjured controls. The careers of players initially earning over $2 million per year, meanwhile, are not negatively affected. This demonstrates the degree of negative impact these injuries have on the careers of NFL players. It also indicates that a player\u27s standing within the league before injury strongly influences how much an ACL injury will affect his career

    LOX/Hydrocarbon Combustion Instability Investigation

    Get PDF
The LOX/Hydrocarbon Combustion Instability Investigation Program was structured to determine if the use of light hydrocarbon combustion fuels with liquid oxygen (LOX) produces combustion performance and stability behavior similar to the LOX/hydrogen propellant combination. In particular methane was investigated to determine if that fuel can be rated for combustion instability using the same techniques as previously used for LOX/hydrogen. These techniques included fuel temperature ramping and stability bomb tests. The hot fire program probed the combustion behavior of methane from ambient to subambient temperatures. Very interesting results were obtained from this program that have potential importance to future LOX/methane development programs. A very thorough and carefully reasoned documentation of the experimental data obtained is contained. The hot fire test logic and the associated tests are discussed. Subscale performance and stability rating testing was accomplished using 40,000 lb. thrust class hardware. Stability rating tests used both bombs and fuel temperature ramping techniques. The test program was successful in generating data for the evaluation of the methane stability characteristics relative to hydrogen and to anchor stability models. Data correlations, performance analysis, stability analyses, and key stability margin enhancement parameters are discussed

Speeded Retrieval Abolishes the False Memory Suppression Effect: Evidence for the Distinctiveness Heuristic

We examined two different accounts of why studying distinctive information reduces false memories within the DRM paradigm. The impoverished relational encoding account predicts that less memorial information, such as overall famililarity, is elicited by the critical lure after distinctive encoding than after non-distinctive encoding. By contrast, the distinctiveness heuristic predicts that participants use a deliberate retrieval strategy to withhold responding to the critical lures. This retrieval strategy refers to a decision rule whereby the absence of memory for expected distinctive information is taken as evidence for an event’s nonoccurrence. We show that the typical false recognition suppression effect only occurs when the recognition test is self-paced. This suppression effect is abolished when participants make recognition decisions under time-pressure, such as within 1 second of seeing the test item. These results are consistent with the distinctiveness heuristic account that a time-consuming retrieval strategy is used to reduce false recognition responses

Why distinctive information reduces false memories: Evidence for both impoverished relational-encoding and distinctiveness heuristic accounts

Two accounts explain why studying pictures reduces false memories within the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm (J. Deese, 1959; H. L. Roediger & K. B. McDermott, 1995). The impoverished relational-encoding account suggests that studying pictures interferes with the encoding of relational information, which is the primary basis for false memories in this paradigm. Alternatively, the distinctiveness heuristic assumes that critical lures are actively withheld by the use of a retrieval strategy. When participants were given inclusion recall instructions to report studied items as well as related items, they still reported critical lures less often after picture encoding than they did after word encoding. As the impoverished relational-encoding account suggests, critical lures appear less likely to come to mind after picture encoding than they do after word encoding. However, the results from a postrecall recognition test provide evidence in favor of the distinctiveness heuristic

Sad mood reduces inadvertent plagiarism: Effects of affective state on source monitoring in cryptomnesia

In two experiments, we explored the influence of affective state, or mood, on inadvertent plagiarism, a memory failure in which individuals either misattribute the source of an idea to themselves rather than to the true originator or simply do not recall having encountered the idea before and claim it as novel. Using a paradigm in which participants generate word puzzle solutions and later recall these solutions, we created an opportunity for participants to mistakenly claim ownership of items that were, in fact, initially generated by their computer ‘partner.’ Results of both experiments suggest that participants induced into a sad mood before solving the word puzzles made fewer source memory errors than did those induced into a happy mood. Results of Experiment 2 also imply that sad mood reduces some item memory errors. Implications for appraisal theories, such as the affect-as-information hypothesis, are discussed

Food Habits of Green Tree Frogs (Hyla cinerea) from Arkansas

    Get PDF
We analyzed stomach contents of 120 Green Tree Frogs, Hyla cinerea, collected between May 1956 and October 2014 in Arkansas. Beetles and arachnids were the predominant prey item; the next most abundant groups were Diptera and Hemiptera. Vegetable matter was also found in several frogs. All identifiable vegetable matter was determined to be of the genus Persicaria, colloquially known as smartweed. Our data suggests that Green Tree Frogs in Arkansas predominantly feed on beetles and arachnids, but occasionally ingest plant matter when actively foraging

Fuzzy Topology, Quantization and Gauge Invariance

Dodson-Zeeman fuzzy topology considered as the possible mathematical framework of quantum geometric formalism. In such formalism the states of massive particle m correspond to elements of fuzzy manifold called fuzzy points. Due to their weak (partial) ordering, m space coordinate x acquires principal uncertainty dx. It's shown that m evolution with minimal number of additional assumptions obeys to schroedinger and dirac formalisms in norelativistic and relativistic cases correspondingly. It's argued that particle's interactions on such fuzzy manifold should be gauge invariant.Comment: 12 pages, Talk given on 'Geometry and Field Theory' conference, Porto, July 2012. Conjugated bile salt hydrolase (BSH) catalyses the hydrolysis of the amide bond that conjugates bile acids to glycine and to taurine. The BSH enzyme from Bifidobacterium longum was overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3), purified and crystallized. Crystallization conditions were screened using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method. Crystal growth, with two distinct morphologies, was optimal in experiments carried out at 303 K. The crystals belong to the hexagonal system, space group P622 with unit-cell parameters a = b = 124.86, c = 219.03 Angstrom, and the trigonal space group P321, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 125.24, c = 117.03 Angstrom. The crystals diffracted X-rays to 2.5 Angstrom spacing. Structure determination using the multiple isomorphous replacement method is in progress

Avalanche dynamics of radio pulsar glitches

We test statistically the hypothesis that radio pulsar glitches result from an avalanche process, in which angular momentum is transferred erratically from the flywheel-like superfluid in the star to the slowly decelerating, solid crust via spatially connected chains of local, impulsive, threshold-activated events, so that the system fluctuates around a self-organised critical state. Analysis of the glitch population (currently 285 events from 101 pulsars) demonstrates that the size distribution in individual pulsars is consistent with being scale invariant, as expected for an avalanche process. The waiting-time distribution is consistent with being exponential in seven out of nine pulsars where it can be measured reliably, after adjusting for observational limits on the minimum waiting time, as for a constant-rate Poisson process. PSR J0537−-6910 and PSR J0835−-4510 are the exceptions; their waiting-time distributions show evidence of quasiperiodicity. In each object, stationarity requires that the rate λ\lambda equals −ϵν˙/- \epsilon \dot{\nu} / , where ν˙\dot{\nu} is the angular acceleration of the crust, is the mean glitch size, and ϵν˙\epsilon\dot{\nu} is the relative angular acceleration of the crust and superfluid. There is no evidence that λ\lambda changes monotonically with spin-down age. The rate distribution itself is fitted reasonably well by an exponential for λ≥0.25yr−1\lambda \geq 0.25 {\rm yr^{-1}}. For λ<0.25yr−1\lambda < 0.25 {\rm yr^{-1}}, its exact form is unknown; the exponential overestimates the number of glitching pulsars observed at low λ\lambda, where the limited total observation time exercises a selection bias.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
