    The decision tree approach to classification

    A class of multistage decision tree classifiers is proposed and studied relative to the classification of multispectral remotely sensed data. The decision tree classifiers are shown to have the potential for improving both the classification accuracy and the computation efficiency. Dimensionality in pattern recognition is discussed and two theorems on the lower bound of logic computation for multiclass classification are derived. The automatic or optimization approach is emphasized. Experimental results on real data are reported, which clearly demonstrate the usefulness of decision tree classifiers

    Ground-based NIR emission spectroscopy of HD189733b

    We investigate the K and L band dayside emission of the hot-Jupiter HD 189733b with three nights of secondary eclipse data obtained with the SpeX instrument on the NASA IRTF. The observations for each of these three nights use equivalent instrument settings and the data from one of the nights has previously reported by Swain et al (2010). We describe an improved data analysis method that, in conjunction with the multi-night data set, allows increased spectral resolution (R~175) leading to high-confidence identification of spectral features. We confirm the previously reported strong emission at ~3.3 microns and, by assuming a 5% vibrational temperature excess for methane, we show that non-LTE emission from the methane nu3 branch is a physically plausible source of this emission. We consider two possible energy sources that could power non-LTE emission and additional modelling is needed to obtain a detailed understanding of the physics of the emission mechanism. The validity of the data analysis method and the presence of strong 3.3 microns emission is independently confirmed by simultaneous, long-slit, L band spectroscopy of HD 189733b and a comparison star.Comment: ApJ accepte

    Transport and magnetic properties in YBaCo2O5.45: Focus on the high-temperature transition

    The electronic transport properties and the magnetic susceptibility were measured in detail in YBaCo2O5.45YBaCo_2O_{5.45}. Close to the so-called metal-insulator transition, strong effects of resistance relaxation, a clear thermal hysteresis and a sudden increase of the resistance noise are observed. This is likely due to the first order character of the transition and to the underlying phases coexistence. Despite these out of equilibrium features, a positive and linear magneto-resistance is also observed, possibly linked to the heterogeneity of the state. From a magnetic point of view, the paramagnetic to ordered magnetic state transition is observed using non linear susceptibilty. This transition shows the characteristics of a continuous transition, and time dependent effects can be linked with the dynamics of magnetic domains in presence of disorder. Thus, when focusing on the order of the transitions, the electronic one and the magnetic one can not be directly associated.Comment: accepted for publication in PR

    The role of moral identity and regret on cheating in sport

    Cheating in sport can have adverse interpersonal consequences and violate the ideal of fair play, which involves abiding by the rules when competing. To help develop effective methods to prevent cheating in sport, research is needed that identifies the psychological factors underpinning an athlete’s decision to cheat. The purpose of this multi-study research was to examine the role of moral identity and regret on cheating in sport. In Study 1, we used a cross-sectional design to examine relationships between moral identity, regret, and cheating attitudes. In Study 2, we used a field design to examine relationships between moral identity, regret, and cheating attitudes during competitive running races to win prize money. After awarding the prize money to the winners, we asked participants whether they would change their decision to cheat if given the opportunity. In Study 1, moral identity was directly and indirectly (via regret) related to cheating attitudes. In Study 2, participants who cheated reported lower moral identity, greater regret, and more favourable cheating attitudes than those who did not cheat. After the prizes were awarded to winners, those who did not cheat, but wanted to change their decision to cheat, reported greater feelings of regret compared to those not wanting to change their decision. In conclusion, cheating in sport elicits regret, which could modify future cheating behaviour. However, athletes may be more likely to cheat in future if they had chosen not to cheat and foregone a benefit

    Two Effective Feature Selection Criteria for Multispectral Remote Sensing

    In an earlier study, Swain et al. reported on two statistical separability measures which for multiclass feature selection were shown experimentally to be more reliable than divergence. However, the empirical results of that study together with the best theoretical results in the literature left open some practical questions regarding the quantitative characterization of these separability measures. This paper is concerned with an empirical study aimed at answering such questions. It has been possible to further substantiate that the Jeffreys-Matusita Distance and a saturating transform of divergence are effective feature selection criteria for remote sensing applications. In fact, an explanation as to why this should be the case has now been made apparent

    Fatigue crack initiation and small crack growth in several airframe alloys

    The growth of naturally-initiated small cracks under a variety of constant amplitude and variable amplitude load sequences is examined for several airframe materials: the conventional aluminum alloys, 2024-T3 and 7075-T6, the aluminum-lithium alloy, 2090-T8E41, and 4340 steel. Loading conditions investigated include constant amplitude loading at R = 0.5, 0, -1 and -2 and the variable amplitude sequences FALSTAFF, Mini-TWIST and FELIX/28. Crack growth was measured at the root of semicircular edge notches using acetate replicas. Crack growth rates are compared on a stress intensity factor basis, to those for large cracks to evaluate the extent of the small crack effect in each alloy. In addition, the various alloys are compared on a crack initiation and crack growth morphology basis

    Energy Balance During Backpacking

    Energy expenditure and energy intake were determined in three Subjects during a 160-kilometer backpacking trip. Prior to the trip, heart rate and oxygen consumption during treadmill walking while carrying a backpack were measured. Subjects recorded heart rate during hiking. Heart rate Was used to estimate energy expenditure based on the heart rate: oxygen consumption relationship (Heart Rate Method). Expenditure was also estimated from distance walked and elevation gained (Terrain Method). Subjects recorded food consumption, and were weighed upon finishing the hike. Mean heart rate during biking was 105 +/- 12 beats per Minute. According to the Heart Rate Method, net expenditure averaged 3410 +/- 955 kilocalories on days 1-4, and 2586 +/- 974 kilocalories on day 5. Net expenditure from the Terrain Method was approximately 28% lower. Gross expenditure, using the Heart Rate Method, averaged 4928 +/- 1050 kilocalories on days 1-4, and 3550 +/- 1052 kilocalories on day 5. Energy intake averaged 2134 +/- 625 kilocalories on days 1-4,and 1117 +/- 320 kilocalories on day 5. Expected weight loss due to the caloric deficit was 1.8 +/- 0.4 kilograms, and actual weight loss was 1.7 +/- 0.6 kilograms. Subjects expended nearly 5000 kilocalories per clay and did not consume sufficient food to maintain body mass
