The writing on the wall: the concealed communities of the East Yorkshire horselads
This paper examines the graffiti found within late nineteenth and early-twentieth century farm buildings in the Wolds of East Yorkshire. It suggests that the graffiti were created by a group of young men at the bottom of the social hierarchy - the horselads â and was one of the ways in which they constructed a distinctive sense of communal identity, at a particular stage in their lives. Whilst it tells us much about changing agricultural regimes and social structures, it also informs us about experiences and attitudes often hidden from official histories and biographies. Haemoglobin mass and running time trial performance after recombinant human erythropoietin administration in trained men
<p>Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) increases haemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and maximal oxygen uptake (vË O2 max).</p>
<p>Purpose: This study defined the time course of changes in Hbmass, vË O2 max as well as running time trial performance
following 4 weeks of rHuEpo administration to determine whether the laboratory observations would translate into actual
improvements in running performance in the field.</p>
<p>Methods: 19 trained men received rHuEpo injections of 50 IUNkg21 body mass every two days for 4 weeks. Hbmass was
determined weekly using the optimized carbon monoxide rebreathing method until 4 weeks after administration. vË O2 max
and 3,000 m time trial performance were measured pre, post administration and at the end of the study.</p>
<p>Results: Relative to baseline, running performance significantly improved by ,6% after administration (10:3061:07 min:sec
vs. 11:0861:15 min:sec, p,0.001) and remained significantly enhanced by ,3% 4 weeks after administration
(10:4661:13 min:sec, p,0.001), while vË O2 max was also significantly increased post administration
(60.765.8 mLNmin21Nkg21 vs. 56.066.2 mLNmin21Nkg21, p,0.001) and remained significantly increased 4 weeks after
rHuEpo (58.065.6 mLNmin21Nkg21, p = 0.021). Hbmass was significantly increased at the end of administration compared to
baseline (15.261.5 gNkg21 vs. 12.761.2 gNkg21, p,0.001). The rate of decrease in Hbmass toward baseline values post
rHuEpo was similar to that of the increase during administration (20.53 gNkg21Nwk21, 95% confidence interval (CI) (20.68,
20.38) vs. 0.54 gNkg21Nwk21, CI (0.46, 0.63)) but Hbmass was still significantly elevated 4 weeks after administration
compared to baseline (13.761.1 gNkg21, p<0.001).</p>
<p>Conclusion: Running performance was improved following 4 weeks of rHuEpo and remained elevated 4 weeks after
administration compared to baseline. These field performance effects coincided with rHuEpo-induced elevated vË O2 max and
Hbmass.</p>
Forced Solid-State Interactions for the Selective âTurn-Onâ Fluorescence Sensing of Aluminum Ions in Water Using a Sensory Polymer Substrate
Selective and sensitive solid sensory substrates for detecting Al(III) in pure
water are reported. The material is a flexible polymer film that can be handled and exhibits gel
behavior and membrane performance. The film features a chemically anchored salicylaldehyde
benzoylhydrazone derivative as an aluminum ion fluorescence sensor. A novel procedure for
measuring Al(III) at the ppb level using a single solution drop in 20 min was developed. In this
procedure, a drop was allowed to enter the hydrophilic material for 15 min before a 5 min
drying period. The process forced the Al(III) to interact with the sensory motifs within the
membrane before measuring the fluorescence of the system. The limit of detection of Al(III)
was 22 ppm. Furthermore, a water-soluble sensory polymer containing the same sensory
motifs was developed with a limit of detection of Al(III) of 1.5 ppb, which was significantly
lower than the Environmental Protection Agency recommendations for drinking water.Spanish Ministerio de EconomiÌa

Hepatic Abnormalities Associated with Aluminum Loading in Piglets

No association between the aluminium content of trabecular bone and bone density, mass or size of the proximal femur in elderly men and women
BACKGROUND: Aluminium is considered a bone toxic metal since poisoning can lead to aluminium-induced bone disease in patients with chronic renal failure. Healthy subjects with normal renal function retain 4% of the aluminium consumed. They might thus also accumulate aluminium and eventually be at risk of long-term low-grade aluminium intoxication that can affect bone health. METHODS: We therefore examined 62 patients with femoral neck fractures or osteoarthritis of the hip (age range 38â93), with the aim of examining whether aluminium in bone is associated with bone-mineral density (BMD), content (BMC) or width of the femoral neck measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). During operations bone biopsies were taken from the trabecular bone of the proximal femur. The samples were measured for their content of aluminium using a mass spectrometer. RESULTS: No significant association between the aluminium content in bone and femoral neck BMD, BMC or width could be found after multivariate adjustment. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the accumulated aluminium content in bone during life does not substantially influence the extent of osteoporosis
Shot at Dawn: Late Photography and the Anti-War Memorial
The military executions of World War One are the subject of Chloe Dewe
Mathewsâs 2014 photographic series Shot at Dawn. These eventsâin
which hundreds of soldiers were court-martialled and executed for
cowardice and desertionâremain controversial, without consensus or
established collective narrative. This article charts historic negotiations
with the subject but also considers more recent efforts to integrate these
proceedings within memorial practice. World War One remembrance
activities, whilst diverse, have often emphasised sacrifice, heroism and
community. Correspondingly, participation and engagement were core
values in the major British World War One centenary arts project, titled
14-18 NOW, from which Shot at Dawn was commissioned. Chloe Dewe
Mathewsâs contribution to the programme, however, presents a
photographic aesthetic of resistance to the principles of inclusivity and
remembrance elsewhere embraced by the project. As such, the work
challenges the consensual politics of commemoration andâthrough the
practices of late photography, land art and performance pilgrimageâ
substitutes trauma and forgetfulness for reconciliation and memory

Modeling the differentiation of A- and C-type baroreceptor firing patterns
The baroreceptor neurons serve as the primary transducers of blood pressure
for the autonomic nervous system and are thus critical in enabling the body to
respond effectively to changes in blood pressure. These neurons can be
separated into two types (A and C) based on the myelination of their axons and
their distinct firing patterns elicited in response to specific pressure
stimuli. This study has developed a comprehensive model of the afferent
baroreceptor discharge built on physiological knowledge of arterial wall
mechanics, firing rate responses to controlled pressure stimuli, and ion
channel dynamics within the baroreceptor neurons. With this model, we were able
to predict firing rates observed in previously published experiments in both A-
and C-type neurons. These results were obtained by adjusting model parameters
determining the maximal ion-channel conductances. The observed variation in the
model parameters are hypothesized to correspond to physiological differences
between A- and C-type neurons. In agreement with published experimental
observations, our simulations suggest that a twofold lower potassium
conductance in C-type neurons is responsible for the observed sustained basal
firing, whereas a tenfold higher mechanosensitive conductance is responsible
for the greater firing rate observed in A-type neurons. A better understanding
of the difference between the two neuron types can potentially be used to gain
more insight into the underlying pathophysiology facilitating development of
targeted interventions improving baroreflex function in diseased individuals,
e.g. in patients with autonomic failure, a syndrome that is difficult to
