    Implications of Qudit Superselection rules for the Theory of Decoherence-free Subsystems

    The use of d-state systems, or qudits, in quantum information processing is discussed. Three-state and higher dimensional quantum systems are known to have very different properties from two-state systems, i.e., qubits. In particular there exist qudit states which are not equivalent under local unitary transformations unless a selection rule is violated. This observation is shown to be an important factor in the theory of decoherence-free, or noiseless, subsystems. Experimentally observable consequences and methods for distinguishing these states are also provided, including the explicit construction of new decoherence-free or noiseless subsystems from qutrits.     An Investigation into the Geometry of Seyfert Galaxies

    We present a new method for the statistical investigation into the distributions of the angle beta between the radio axis and the normal to the galactic disk for a sample of Seyfert galaxies. We discuss how further observations of the sample galaxies can strengthen the conclusions. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that AGN jets are oriented randomly in space, independent of the position of the plane of the galaxy. By making the simple assumption that the Standard Model of AGN holds, with a universal opening angle of the thick torus of phi_c, we demonstrate a statistical method to obtain an estimate of phi_c. Our data are not consistent with the simple-minded idea that Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s are differentiated solely by whether or not our line of sight lies within some fixed angle of the jet axis. Our result is significant on the 2 sigma level and can thus be considered only suggestive, not conclusive.     Generalized Euler Angle Paramterization for SU(N)

    In a previous paper (math-ph/0202002) an Euler angle parameterization for SU(4) was given. Here we present the derivation of a generalized Euler angle parameterization for SU(N). The formula for the calculation of the Haar measure for SU(N) as well as its relation to Marinov's volume formula for SU(N) will also be derived.     A Parametrization of Bipartite Systems Based on SU(4) Euler Angles

    In this paper we give an explicit parametrization for all two qubit density matrices. This is important for calculations involving entanglement and many other types of quantum information processing. To accomplish this we present a generalized Euler angle parametrization for SU(4) and all possible two qubit density matrices. The important group-theoretical properties of such a description are then manifest. We thus obtain the correct Haar (Hurwitz) measure and volume element for SU(4) which follows from this parametrization.     Developing A Sustainable Model for Impactful Academic Advising

    The primary focus of this research is advising delivery models for community colleges. This capstone focused on the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), namely John Tyler Community College (JTCC). The research focused on delivering the most consistently supportive advising framework for faculty, staff, and students. A mixed-methods study was used by way of an online survey and in-person focus groups. Secondary data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) was used to compare JTCC to other colleges in the VCCS. This study also focused on best practices regarding academic advising and advisor development, evaluated the needs of current advising personnel, and provided academic advising strategies specifically for the JTCC student population. Using that information, this paper offers strategies for the successful implementation of new advising processes for institutions experiencing structural change

    Deep Video Generation, Prediction and Completion of Human Action Sequences

    Current deep learning results on video generation are limited while there are only a few first results on video prediction and no relevant significant results on video completion. This is due to the severe ill-posedness inherent in these three problems. In this paper, we focus on human action videos, and propose a general, two-stage deep framework to generate human action videos with no constraints or arbitrary number of constraints, which uniformly address the three problems: video generation given no input frames, video prediction given the first few frames, and video completion given the first and last frames. To make the problem tractable, in the first stage we train a deep generative model that generates a human pose sequence from random noise. In the second stage, a skeleton-to-image network is trained, which is used to generate a human action video given the complete human pose sequence generated in the first stage. By introducing the two-stage strategy, we sidestep the original ill-posed problems while producing for the first time high-quality video generation/prediction/completion results of much longer duration. We present quantitative and qualitative evaluation to show that our two-stage approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in video generation, prediction and video completion.     Circumnuclear stellar population, morphology and environment of Seyfert 2 galaxies: an evolutionary scenario

    We investigate the relation between the characteristics of the circumnuclear stellar population and both the galaxy morphology and the presence of close companions for a sample of 35 Seyfert 2 nuclei. Fifteen galaxies present unambiguous signatures of recent episodes of star formation within ≈\approx300 pc from the nucleus. When we relate this property with the Hubble type of the host galaxy, we find that the incidence of recent circumnuclear star formation increases along the Hubble sequence, and seems to be larger than in non-Seyfert galaxies for the early Hubble types S0 and Sa, but similar to that in non-Seyfert galaxies for later Hubble types. Both in early-type and late-type Seyferts, the presence of recent star-formation is related to the galaxy morphology in the inner few kiloparsecs, as observed in HST images through the filter F606W by Malkan et al., who has assigned a late ``inner Hubble type'' to most Seyfert 2s with recent nuclear star-formation. This new classification is due to the presence of dust lanes and spiral structures in the inner region. The presence of recent star formation in Seyfert 2 nuclei is also related to interactions: among the 13 galaxies of the sample with close companions or in mergers, 9 have recent star formation in the nucleus. These correlations between the presence of companions, inner morphology and the incidence of recent star formation suggest an evolutionary scenario in which the interaction is responsible for sending gas inwards which both feeds the AGN and triggers star-formation. The starburst then fades with time and the composite Seyfert 2 + Starburst nucleus evolves to a ``pure'' Seyfert 2 nucleus with an old stellar population.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
