    Orbital maneuvering end effectors

    This invention relates to an end effector device for grasping and maneuvering objects such as berthing handles of a space telescope. The device includes a V-shaped capture window defined as inclined surfaces in parallel face plates which converge toward a retainer recess in which the handle is retained. A pivotal finger (30) meshes with a pair of pivoted fingers which rotate in counterrotation. The fingers rotate to pull a handle within the capture window into recess where latches lock handle in the recess. To align the capture window, plates may be cocked plus or minus five degrees on base. Drive means is included in the form of a motor coupled with a harmonic drive speed reducer, which provides for slow movement of the fingers at a high torque so that large articles may be handled. Novelty of the invention is believed to reside in the combined intermeshing finger structure, drive means and the harmonic drive speed reducer, which features provide the required maneuverability and strength

    Analysis of the total 12C(α,γ)16O cross section based on available angular distributions and other primary data

    Because a knowledge of the 12C/16O ratio is crucial to the understanding of the later evolution of massive stars, new R- and K-matrix fits have been completed using the available angular distribution data from radiative α capture and elastic α scattering on 12C. Estimates of the total 12C(α,γ)16O rate at stellar energies are reported. In contrast with previous work, the analyses generally involve R- and K-matrix fits directly to the primary data, i.e., the energy- and angle-dependent differential yields, with all relevant partial waves fitted simultaneously (referred to here as surface fits). It is shown that, while the E1 part of the reaction is well constrained by a recent experiment on the β-delayed α-particle decay of 16N, only upper limits can be placed on the E2 ground state cross section factor which we take conservatively as SE2(300)<140 keV b. Simulations were then carried out to explore what kind of new data could lead to better restrictions on SE2(300). We find that improved elastic scattering data may be the best short-term candidate for such restrictions while significantly improving S(300) with new radiative capture data may require a longer-term effort. Theoretical models and estimates from α-transfer reactions for the E2 part of 12C(α,γ)16O are then discussed for comparison with the R- and K-matrix fits of the present work

    Weak double layers in the auroral ionosphere

    Previous work on the evolution of weak double layers in a hydrogen plasma was extended to include H(+) and O(+) with relative drift. The relative drift between hydrogen and oxygen ions due to a quasi-static parallel electric field gives rise to a strong linear fluid instability which dominates the ion-acoustic mode at the bottom of the auroral acceleration region. This ion-ion instability can modify ion distributions at lower altitudes and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of weak double layers at higher altitudes in the ion-acoustic regime. Ion hole formation can occur for smaller relative electron-ion drifts than seen in previous simulations, due to the hydrogen-oxygen two-stream instability. This results in local modification of the ion distributions in phase space, and a partial filling of the valley between the hydrogen and oxygen peaks, which would be expected at higher altitudes on auroral field lines. The observed velocity diffusion does not necessarily preclude ion hole and double layer formation in hydrogen in the ion-acoustic regime. These simulation results are consistent with the experimentally measured persistence of separate hydrogen and oxygen peaks, and the observation of weak double layers above an altitude of 3000 km on auroral field lines

    Simulating `Complex' Problems with Quantum Monte Carlo

    We present a new quantum Monte Carlo algorithm suitable for generically complex problems, such as systems coupled to external magnetic fields or anyons in two spatial dimensions. We find that the choice of gauge plays a nontrivial role, and can be used to reduce statistical noise in the simulation. Furthermore, it is found that noise can be greatly reduced by approximate cancellations between the phases of the (gauge dependent) statistical flux and the external magnetic flux.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages. 3 postscript files for figures attache

    Until now, policy makers interested in tackling disadvantage have mainly relied on income poverty as their key measure. This approach, enshrined in the Child Poverty Act 2010, focuses mainly on income poverty, to the exclusion of other disadvantages like poor housing, worklessness and ill health. Recently, this income-based approach has come under growing criticism – in particular from the Field Review on Poverty and Life Chances – which instead advocated multidimensional measures, which provide a fuller picture of disadvantage. This report is the first large-scale analysis of Scottish families’ experiences of multiple disadvantage. Using data from the Scottish Household survey, it provides new analysis to help us understand the scale and nature of disadvantage affecting families in Scotland. This analysis has two key benefits beyond that of providing a more accurate picture. First, it is more easily understood by the public, while complex income-based measures are not. And second, it can contribute to better informed policy from both central and local government by identifying a variety of factors contributing to disadvantage. A Wider Lens is the first phase of a research project on family disadvantage in Scotland. The next stage will use indepth qualitative research techniques (including focus groups, diary-prompted interviews and ethnographic visits to families’ homes) to develop detailed knowledge of the challenges experienced by families suffering from multiple disadvantages, and to develop policy solutions to help overcome them
