WHICH IMAGE? OF WHICH COUNTRY? UNDER WHICH SPOTLIGHT? POWER, VISIBILITY, AND THE IMAGE OF BRAZIL

Abstract: From the beginning of the 21st century until the protests that preceded the 2014 World Cup, a common idea raised by academics, journalists, and commentators interested in Brazil was the alleged “rise” or “emergence” of the country as a global power in the international arena. A significant feature of these discussions is how positive or not the image that Brazil manages to project to the world is. In most cases, it is argued that Brazil needs to construct and project such images to successfully entice tourists, attract investment, and increase exports, as well as to consolidate its global political aspirations. This article will contribute to the debate about Brazil’s supposed need to design and manage a particular image. More specifically, it examines some of the assumptions underpinning the alleged need to create public images; the type of nation constructed and projected; as well as the characteristics of the foreign gaze that presumably observes Brazil. The examination of these issues is relevant in highlighting some overlooked structural inequalities and asymmetric power relations involved in the construction and projection of the national image

Disasters as media events: The rescue of the Chilean miners on national and global television

    Get PDF
Focusing on the 2010 rescue of Chilean miners, this article problematizes some current perspectives on media events, particularly in relation to disasters. An analysis of the narratives constructed during the live broadcast of the rescue by the Chilean government and a national and a global television station suggests that media events theories should go beyond the categories of “integrative” and “disruptive.” Additionally, it appears that the polyphony of media events introduced by global media organizations is not a guarantee of alternative voices. Finally, this story is a powerful reminder that disasters can be used for political purposes, overlooking in this case the responsibility of the company owning the mine and the communicative controls imposed by the authorities

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the collapse time of a gas bubble injected into an otherwise stagnant liquid under quasi-static conditions and for a wide range of liquid viscosities. This work has been supported by the Spanish MINECO (Subdirección General de Gestión de Ayudas a la Investigación), Junta de Andalucía, and European Funds under Project Nos. The mediated effect of social presence on social commerce WOM behavior

    Get PDF
Based on expectation disconfirmation theory, this study analyzes how attitudes (satisfaction and loyalty) influence interaction intention (sWOM) and, consequently, active and passive sWOM behavior. It does so by assessing the mediating role of social presence on sWOM intention and behavior. The empirical results provide several contributions. First, knowing how to increase active sWOM contributes to bridging the gap regarding how to enhance interactions between users. Second, fostering active sWOM on social commerce websites will provide companies with more positive user-generated content, since this active sWOM comes from satisfied and loyal users, and it is assumed that they will rate the product positively and report a good experience. Third, companies can benefit more from users if users interact with other users by sharing their experiences. This study sheds light on how social presence can mediate the relationship between intention and behavior, particularly when it comes to increasing active participation and brand promotion. © 2021 by the authors.
