Inter- and Intra-Chain Attractions in Solutions of Flexible Polyelectrolytes at Nonzero Concentration
Constant temperature molecular dynamics simulations were used to study
solutions of flexible polyelectrolyte chains at nonzero concentrations with
explicit counterions and unscreened coulombic interactions. Counterion
condensation, measured via the self-diffusion coefficient of the counterions,
is found to increase with polymer concentration, but contrary to the prediction
of Manning theory, the renormalized charge fraction on the chains decreases
with increasing Bjerrum length without showing any saturation. Scaling analysis
of the radius of gyration shows that the chains are extended at low polymer
concentrations and small Bjerrum lengths, while at sufficiently large Bjerrum
lengths, the chains shrink to produce compact structures with exponents smaller
than a gaussian chain, suggesting the presence of attractive intrachain
interactions. A careful study of the radial distribution function of the
center-of-mass of the polyelectrolyte chains shows clear evidence that
effective interchain attractive interactions also exist in solutions of
flexible polyelectrolytes, similar to what has been found for rodlike
polyelectrolytes. Our results suggest that the broad maximum observed in
scattering experiments is due to clustering of chains.Comment: 12 pages, REVTeX, 15 eps figure

Noise reduction evaluation of grids in a supersonic air stream with application to Space Shuttle
Near field acoustic measurements were obtained for a model supersonic air jet perturbed by a screen. Noise reduction potential in the vicinity of the space shuttle vehicle during ground launch when the rocket exhaust flow is perturbed by a grid was determined. Both 10 and 12 mesh screens were utilized for this experiment, and each exhibited a noise reduction only at very low frequencies in the near field forward arc. A power spectrum analysis revealed that a modest reduction of from 3 to 5 decibels exists below a Strouhal number S sub t = 0.11. Above S sub t = 0.11 screen harmonics increased the observed sound pressure level. The favorable noise reductions obtained with screens for S sub t 0.11 may be of substantial interest for the space shuttle at ground launch
The Ultraviolet Attenuation Law in Backlit Spiral Galaxies
(Abridged) The effective extinction law (attenuation behavior) in galaxies in
the emitted ultraviolet is well known only for actively star-forming objects
and combines effects of the grain properties, fine structure in the dust
distribution, and relative distributions of stars and dust. We use GALEX, XMM
Optical Monitor, and HST data to explore the UV attenuation in the outer parts
of spiral disks which are backlit by other UV-bright galaxies, starting with
candidates provided by Galaxy Zoo participants. Our analysis incorporates
galaxy symmetry, using non-overlapping regions of each galaxy to derive error
estimates on the attenuation measurements. The entire sample has an attenuation
law close to the Calzetti et al. (1994) form; the UV slope for the overall
sample is substantially shallower than found by Wild et al. (2011), a
reasonable match to the more distant galaxies in our sample but not to the
weighted combination including NGC 2207. The nearby, bright spiral NGC 2207
alone gives accuracy almost equal to the rest of our sample, and its outer arms
have a very low level of foreground starlight. This "grey" law can be produced
from the distribution of dust alone, without a necessary contribution from
differential escape of stars from dense clouds. The extrapolation needed to
compare attenution between backlit galaxies at moderate redshifts, and local
systems from SDSS data, is mild enough to allow use of galaxy overlaps to trace
the cosmic history of dust. For NGC 2207, the covering factor of clouds with
small optical attenuation becomes a dominant factor farther into the
ultraviolet, which opens the possibility that widespread diffuse dust dominates
over dust in star-forming regions deep into the ultraviolet. Comparison with
published radiative-transfer models indicates that the role of dust clumping
dominates over differences in grain populations, at this spatial resolution.Comment: In press, Astronomical Journa
Photon collection from a trapped ion--cavity system
We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion cavity QED system.
A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2 mm
optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near resonant laser light while
the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity
detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid
angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure
arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into
existing atom{photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway towards an
efficient atom{photon quantum interface
Sofic-Dyck shifts
We define the class of sofic-Dyck shifts which extends the class of
Markov-Dyck shifts introduced by Inoue, Krieger and Matsumoto. Sofic-Dyck
shifts are shifts of sequences whose finite factors form unambiguous
context-free languages. We show that they correspond exactly to the class of
shifts of sequences whose sets of factors are visibly pushdown languages. We
give an expression of the zeta function of a sofic-Dyck shift
(Carbonyl-1κC)bis[2,3(η5)-cyclopentadienyl][μ3-(S-methyl trithiocarbonato)methylidyne-1:2:3κ4 C,S′′:C:C](triphenylphosphine-1κP)(μ3-sulfido-1:2:3κ3 S)dicobalt(II)iron(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [FeCo2(C5H5)2(C3H3S3)S(C18H15P)(CO)]CF3SO3, consists of a triangular irondicobalt cluster cation and a trifluoromethanesulfonate anion. In the cation, the FeCo2 triangle is symmetrically capped on one face by an S atom and on the other by a C atom linked to a methyl trithiocarbonate residue that bridges the Fe—C bond. Each Co atom carries a cyclopentadienyl ligand while the Fe atom coordinates to one carbonyl and one triphenylphosphine ligand. In the crystal structure, the cation is linked to the anion by a number of weak non-classical C—H⋯O and C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds and weak S⋯O (3.317 Å) and S⋯F (3.198 Å) interactions. The structure is further stabilized by additional intermolecular C—H⋯O, C—H⋯F and O⋯O (2.942 Å) contacts, together with an unusual S⋯π(Cp) interaction (S⋯centroid distance = 3.385 Å), generating an extended network
