    Radio-over-fiber linearization with optimized genetic algorithm CPWL model

    This article proposes an optimized version of a canonical piece-wise-linear (CPWL) digital predistorter in order to enhance the linearity of a radio-over-fiber (RoF) LTE mobile fronthaul. In this work, we propose a threshold allocation optimization process carried out by a genetic algorithm (GA) in order to optimize the CPWL model (GA-CPWL). Firstly, experiments show how the CPWL model outperforms the classical memory polynomial DPD in an intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) RoF link. Then, the GA-CPWL predistorter is compared with the CPWL model in several scenarios, in order to verify that the proposed DPD offers better performance in different optical transmission conditions. Experimental results reveal that with a proper threshold allocation, the GA-CPWL predistorter offers very promising outcomes

    Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt. en el tratamiento de los síntomas vasomotores de la menopausia: revisión

    Introduction: Several studies have shown that preparations based on the rhizomes and roots of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt.) can be useful in alleviating the menopausal symptoms. The aim of this study is to perform an update bibliographic review of the efficacy and safety of black cohosh in the treatment of the vasomotor symptoms of menopause. Method: A review of published articles from January 2005 to March 2021 in the resource search engine of the University of La Laguna, el punto Q”. Randomized and controlled clinical trials, which had the key words in the abstract, text or title, in both English and Spanish, were selected. Results: We found 13 trials which met the selection criteria. The studies reviewed showed that the black cohosh preparations (mainly commercial extracts standardized in their content of active ingredients) produced in most of the studies a significant reduction compared to placebo in the vegetative (hot flashes and night sweats) and psychological symptoms of menopause, as well as an improvement in the quality of life. No serious adverse effects were reported at the dose administered. Conclusions: Cimicifuga racemosa extracts can be effective and safe for the treatment of vegetative and psychological symptoms of menopause, being well tolerated. However, more clinical trials with a larger number of patients, more extensive, the use of standardized preparations, as well as similar criteria for inclusion and assessment of symptoms, are necessary to obtain more conclusive data.Introducción: Diversos estudios han puesto de manifiesto que los preparados a base de los rizomas y raíces de cimicífuga (Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt.) pueden ser útiles para aliviar los síntomas menopáusicos. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión de la eficacia y seguridad de estos preparados en el tratamiento de los síntomas vasomotores de la menopausia. Método: Se realizó una búsqueda de los artículos publicados desde enero de 2005 a marzo de 2021 en el buscador de recursos de la Universidad de La Laguna, “el Punto Q”. Se seleccionaron los ensayos clínicos aleatorizados y controlados, que tuvieran las palabras claves en el resumen, texto o título, tanto en inglés como en español. Resultados: Se identificaron 13 ensayos clínicos que incluían los criterios de selección establecidos. Se encontró que los preparados de cimicífuga (principalmente extractos comerciales estandarizados en su contenido en principios activos) produjeron en la mayoría de los estudios una reducción significativa comparada con el placebo de los síntomas vegetativos (sofocos y sudores nocturnos) y psicológicos de la menopausia, así como una mejoría de la calidad de vida. No se observaron efectos adversos serios a las dosis utilizadas. Conclusiones: Los extractos de cimicífuga pueden ser eficaces y seguros para el tratamiento de los síntomas vegetativos y psicológicos de la menopausia, siendo bien tolerados. No obstante, son necesarios más ensayos clínicos con mayor número de pacientes, más extensos, uso de preparaciones estandarizadas, así como con criterios similares de inclusión y valoración de los síntomas, para obtener datos más concluyentes

    Evaluation of potential of high Si high C steel nanostructured bainite for wear and fatigue applications

    The present study is concerned with the potential of high carbon, high silicon steel grades isothermally transformed to bainite at low temperature (<300 C). The first part gives an overview of the design principles, allowing very high strength and ductility to be achieved while minimising transformation duration. Wear and fatigue properties are then investigated for over 10 variants of such materials, manufactured in the laboratory or industrially. The results are discussed against published data. Tensile strengths above 2 GPa are routinely achieved, with, in one case, an exceptional and unprecedented total elongation of over 20%. Bainite plate thickness and retained austenite content are shown to be important factors in controlling the yield strength, though additional, non-negligible parameters remain to be quantified. Rolling-sliding wear performances are found to be exceptional, with as little as 1% of the specific wear rate of conventional 100Cr6 isothermally transformed to bainite. It is suggested that this results from the decomposition of retained austenite in the worn layer, which considerably increases hardness and presumably introduces compressive residual stresses. Fatigue performance was slightly improved over 100Cr6 for one of the two industrially produced materials but significantly lower otherwise.     Effects of 3% trehalose as an adjuvant treatment after lasik

    Purpose: To evaluate the effect of 3% trehalose as an adjuvant in the standard treatment after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Design: Interventional prospective comparative single-blind study. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Quirón Zaragoza, Spain. Methods: A total of 26 eyes (13 patients) were included, of which 12 eyes (group 1) received conventional treatment with lubricant drops of hyaluronic acid (0.15%) and 14 eyes (group 2) received, additionally, an ophthalmic solution of 3% trehalose. Pre- and postoperative quality-of-life tests and vital stains, tear breakup time, and osmolarity measurements were made. Results: We obtained statistically significant differences between the groups in the Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye test in all visits with respect to severity, and in the postoperative day 1 visit with respect to frequency, in all cases favoring the trehalose treatment. The values of osmolarity were not significantly different between groups. However, we did find significant differences in the Oxford scale in day 90 for the trehalose treatment (P<0.001), and in the National Eye Institute scale in day 30 (P=0.02). Conclusion: The results of this exploratory study indicate that the adjuvant treatment with 3% trehalose could be superior with respect to the standard treatment, with improvements in the objective and subjective parameters of tear quality

    Collisional-inhomogeneity-induced generation of matter-wave dark solitons

    We propose an experimentally relevant protocol for the controlled generation of matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In particular, using direct numerical simulations, we show that by switching-on a spatially inhomogeneous (step-like) change of the s-wave scattering length, it is possible to generate a controllable number of dark solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional BEC. A similar phenomenology is also found in the two-dimensional setting of "disk-shaped" BECs but, as the solitons are subject to the snaking instability, they decay into vortex structures.     Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly growing as a revolutionary technique. It provides an interesting ability to produce complex geometries, a key feature for enhancing performance and widening application fields of hardmetal components, limited characteristic for traditional processing techniques. Within this context, it is necessary to study the mechanical integrity of samples produced by AM [AMed] where it is expected to find characteristics linked to the shaping route followed, and study if they will have influence on the final behaviour regarding the mechanical properties expect for a specimen process by a traditional manufacturing route. This work aims to study the final microstructure, mechanical properties and layer assemblage at different length scales for a 12%wtCo– WC grade hardmetals of medium grain size consolidated by binder jetting 3DP and subsequent SinterHIP. In addition, compare this results with the ones obtained from a 12%wtCo–WC specimens process by means of a traditional technique like Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) using the same raw material like in the AMed specimens. Hardness Vickers at macro- and microlength scale as well as scratch tests, using different loads and indenter tips, are conducted on both type of samples. The results are analysed and discussed in terms of oriented layer-like material assemblage effects on microstructural variability, mechanical response determined by intrinsic physical behaviour of the material and feedstock used

    Metastasis of renal clear-cell carcinoma to the oral mucosa, an atypical location

    The majority of cases of metastatic tumors involve the mandible and some the maxilla but they are considerably less common in intraoral soft tissues. In addition, the primary tumor is known in the majority of cases; although in onethird of such cases, metastasis is the first clinical manifestation. The most common primary tumors metastasizing to the mouth are lung carcinoma in men and breast carcinoma in women. An oral metastasis implies a serious prognosis, as in the majority of patients there is multiple organ involvement at the time of diagnosis. We present the case of a 52-year old patient with renal pathology who came to the emergency room due to a rapidly increasing gingival tumor. With the provisional clinical diagnosis of a pyogenic granuloma,the tumor was excised. Subsequent anatomopathological analysis revealed a tumor metastasis compatible with clear-cell carcinoma, and its renal origin was confirmed by means of immunohistochemical techniques
