Adolescents' and parents' views of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Ireland
Aim: To explore adolescents’ and parents’ experiences of CAMHS in relation to accessibility, approachability, and appropriateness. Methods: Using a descriptive qualitative design, a combination of focus group and single interviews were conducted with adolescents (n=15) and parents (n=32) from three mental health clinics. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Accessing mental health services was a challenging experience due to knowledge deficit, lack of information and limited availability of specialist services. Participants desired more information, involvement in decision-making, single and shared consultations, flexible scheduling of appointments, continuity with clinicians, school support and parent support groups. Participants seem to be generally satisfied, however adolescents felt less involved in decision making than they would have liked. Frequent staff changes was problematic as it disrupted continuity of care and hindered the formation of a trusting relationship. Implications for practice: Parents and adolescents expressed similar views of the positive and negative aspects of mental health services. Their need for more information-sharing and involvement in decision-making underline the importance of collaborative practice. Clinician continuity contributed to trusting therapeutic relationships and was valued. These are key principles that with attention, could lead to quality service provision for adolescents and families

Treating hummingbirds as feathered bees : a case of ethological cross-pollination
Hummingbirds feed from hundreds of flowers every day. The properties of these flowers provide these birds with a wealth of information about colour, space and time to guide how they forage. To understand how hummingbirds might use this information, researchers have adapted established laboratory paradigms for use in the field. In recent years, however, experimental inspiration has come less from other birds, and more from looking at other nectar-feeders, particularly honeybees and bumblebees, which have been models for foraging behaviour and cognition for over a century. In a world in which the cognitive abilities of bees regularly make the news, research on the influence of ecology and sensory systems on bee behaviour is leading to novel insights in hummingbird cognition. As methods designed to study insects in the laboratory are being applied to hummingbirds in the field, converging methods can help us identify and understand convergence in cognition, behaviour and ecology.PostprintPeer reviewe
A numerical study of the development of bulk scale-free structures upon growth of self-affine aggregates
During the last decade, self-affine geometrical properties of many growing
aggregates, originated in a wide variety of processes, have been well
characterized. However, little progress has been achieved in the search of a
unified description of the underlying dynamics. Extensive numerical evidence
has been given showing that the bulk of aggregates formed upon ballistic
aggregation and random deposition with surface relaxation processes can be
broken down into a set of infinite scale invariant structures called "trees".
These two types of aggregates have been selected because it has been
established that they belong to different universality classes: those of
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang and Edward-Wilkinson, respectively. Exponents describing
the spatial and temporal scale invariance of the trees can be related to the
classical exponents describing the self-affine nature of the growing interface.
Furthermore, those exponents allows us to distinguish either the compact or
non-compact nature of the growing trees. Therefore, the measurement of the
statistic of the process of growing trees may become a useful experimental
technique for the evaluation of the self-affine properties of some aggregates.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.
Soliton effects in dangling-bond wires on Si(001)
Dangling bond wires on Si(001) are prototypical one dimensional wires, which
are expected to show polaronic and solitonic effects. We present electronic
structure calculations, using the tight binding model, of solitons in
dangling-bond wires, and demonstrate that these defects are stable in
even-length wires, although approximately 0.1 eV higher in energy than a
perfect wire. We also note that in contrast to conjugated polymer systems,
there are two types of soliton and that the type of soliton has strong effects
on the energetics of the bandgap edges, with formation of intra-gap states
between 0.1 eV and 0.2 eV from the band edges. These intra-gap states are

Yang-Lee Theory for a Nonequilibrium Phase Transition
To analyze phase transitions in a nonequilibrium system we study its grand
canonical partition function as a function of complex fugacity. Real and
positive roots of the partition function mark phase transitions. This behavior,
first found by Yang and Lee under general conditions for equilibrium systems,
can also be applied to nonequilibrium phase transitions. We consider a
one-dimensional diffusion model with periodic boundary conditions. Depending on
the diffusion rates, we find real and positive roots and can distinguish two
regions of analyticity, which can identified with two different phases. In a
region of the parameter space both of these phases coexist. The condensation

Collective Behavior of Asperities in Dry Friction at Small Velocities
We investigate a simple model of dry friction based on extremal dynamics of
asperities. At small velocities, correlations develop between the asperities,
whose range becomes infinite in the limit of infinitely slow driving, where the
system is self-organized critical. This collective phenomenon leads to
effective aging of the asperities and results in velocity dependence of the

Multiple Myeloma: A Review of Imaging Features and Radiological Techniques
The recently updated Durie/Salmon PLUS staging system published in 2006 highlights the many advances that have been made in the imaging of multiple myeloma, a common malignancy of plasma cells. In this article, we shall focus primarily on the more sensitive and specific whole-body imaging techniques, including whole-body computed tomography, whole-body magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission computed tomography. We shall also discuss new and emerging imaging techniques and future developments in the radiological assessment of multiple myeloma
Potential contribution of selected metallic restorative dentistry materials to X-ray fluorescence
Recent advances have led to the use of new materials in dental restoration which is an area of rapid growth. Applications include improving oral aesthetics and essential rehabilitation, whilst procedures range from the recovery of partial elements (inlays) to fitting dental implants. Ceramics, polymers and metallic materials have all been successfully employed in dental applications and benefit from new cost efficient manufacturing techniques. The application of radiographic techniques in dentistry and other medicine is also increasing, and the combination of new materials and radiation can lead to an elevated health risk. X-rays can interact with metallic materials producing X-ray fluorescence, which can increase the radiation dose in proximity to restorative material and increase the risk of live biological tissue becoming cancerous. The issue demands consideration so that the biological risks associated with such procedures are kept as low as possible. Comparisons of doses calculated for several materials have provided evidence that the Ti cp and NiCrTi alloys present less contribution to the increase of dose in surrounding soft tissue and the potential deleterious biological effects. On the other hand, Amalgam appears to be the most deleterious alloy
Patterns in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation
We review a recent asymptotic weak noise approach to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang
equation for the kinetic growth of an interface in higher dimensions. The weak
noise approach provides a many body picture of a growing interface in terms of
a network of localized growth modes. Scaling in 1d is associated with a gapless
domain wall mode. The method also provides an independent argument for the
