    Role of NBI fuelling in contributing to density peaking between the ICRH and NBI identity plasmas on JET

    Density peaking has been studied between an ICRH and NBI identity plasma in JET. The comparison shows that 8 MW of NBI heating/fueling increases the density peaking by a factor of two, being R/L (n) = 0.45 for the ICRH pulse and R/L (n) = 0.93 for the NBI one averaged radially over rho (tor) = 0.4, 0.8. The dimensionless profiles of q, rho *, upsilon *, beta (n) and T (i)/T (e) approximate to 1 were matched within 5% difference except in the central part of the plasma (rho (tor) < 0.3). The difference in the curvature pinch (same q-profile) and thermo-pinch (T (i) = T (e)) between the ICRH and NBI discharges is virtually zero. Both the gyro-kinetic simulations and integrated modelling strongly support the experimental result where the NBI fuelling is the main contributor to the density peaking for this identity pair. It is to be noted here that the integrated modeling does not reproduce the measured electron density profiles, but approximately reproduces the difference in the density profiles between the ICRH and NBI discharge. Based on these modelling results and the analyses, the differences between the two pulses in impurities, fast ions (FIs), toroidal rotation and radiation do not cause any such changes in the background transport that would invalidate the experimental result where the NBI fuelling is the main contributor to the density peaking. This result of R/L (n) increasing by a factor of 2 per 8 MW of NBI power is valid for the ion temperature gradient dominated low power H-mode plasmas. However, some of the physics processes influencing particle transport, like rotation, turbulence and FI content scale with power, and therefore, the simple scaling on the role of the NBI fuelling in JET is not necessarily the same under higher power conditions or in larger devices

    Overview of JET results for optimising ITER operation

Reproduced with the permission of the Controller of Her Majesty's Stationery Office.The JET 2019-2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019-2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (ι) physics in the coming D-T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D-T benefited from the highest D-D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.Peer reviewe

    Overview of Toroidal and Poloidal Momentum Transport Studies in JET

    Abstract. This paper reports on the recent studies of toroidal and poloidal momentum transport in JET. The ratio of the global energy confinement time to the momentum confinement is found to be close to τ E /τ φ =1 except for the low density discharges where the ratio is τ E /τ φ =2-3. On the other hand, local transport analysis of tens of discharges shows that the ratio of the local effective momentum diffusivity to the ion heat diffusivity is χ φ /χ i 0.1-0.4 rather than unity, as expected from the global confinement times and used in ITER predictions. The apparent discrepancy in the global and local momentum versus ion heat transport is explained by the fact that momentum confinement within edge pedestal is worse than that of the ion heat and thus, momentum pedestal is weaker than that of ion temperature. Another observation is that while the T i has a threshold in R/L Ti and profiles are stiff, the gradient in v φ increases with increasing torque and no threshold is found. Predictive transport simulations also confirm that χ φ /χ i 0.1-0.4 reproduce the core toroidal velocity profiles well. Concerning poloidal velocities on JET, the experimental measurements show that the carbon poloidal velocity can be an order of magnitude above the neo-classical estimate within the ITB. This significantly affects the calculated radial electric field and therefore, the E×B flow shear used for example in transport simulations. The Weiland model reproduces the onset, location and strength of the ITB well when the experimental poloidal rotation is used while it does not predict an ITB using the neo-classical poloidal velocity. The most plausible explanation for the generation of the anomalous poloidal velocity is the turbulence driven flow through the Reynold's stress. Both TRB and CUTIE turbulence codes show the existence of an anomalous poloidal velocity, being significantly larger than the neo-classical values. And similarly to experiments, the poloidal velocity profiles peak in the vicinity of the ITB and is caused by flow due to the Reynold's stress

    Adult Type 3 Adenylyl Cyclase–Deficient Mice Are Obese

    Background: A recent study of obesity in Swedish men found that polymorphisms in the type 3 adenylyl cyclase (AC3) are associated with obesity, suggesting the interesting possibility that AC3 may play a role in weight control. Therefore, we examined the weight of AC3 mice over an extended period of time. Methodology/Principal Findings: We discovered that AC3 2/2 mice become obese as they age. Adult male AC3 2/2 mice are about 40 % heavier than wild type male mice while female AC3 2/2 are 70 % heavier. The additional weight of AC3 2/2 mice is due to increased fat mass and larger adipocytes. Before the onset of obesity, young AC3 2/2 mice exhibit reduced physical activity, increased food consumption, and leptin insensitivity. Surprisingly, the obesity of AC3 2/2 mice is not due to a loss of AC3 from white adipose and a decrease in lipolysis. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that mice lacking AC3 exhibit obesity that is apparently caused by low locomotor activity, hyperphagia, and leptin insensitivity. The presence of AC3 in primary cilia of neurons of the hypothalamus suggests that cAMP signals generated by AC3 in the hypothalamus may play a critical role in regulation of body weight
