Molecules with a peptide link in protostellar shocks: a comprehensive study of L1157
Interstellar molecules with a peptide link -NH-C(=O)-, like formamide
(NHCHO), acetamide (NHCOCH) and isocyanic acid (HNCO) are
particularly interesting for their potential role in pre-biotic chemistry. We
have studied their emission in the protostellar shock regions L1157-B1 and
L1157-B2, with the IRAM 30m telescope, as part of the ASAI Large Program.
Analysis of the line profiles shows that the emission arises from the outflow
cavities associated with B1 and B2. Molecular abundance of
and are derived for
formamide and isocyanic acid, respectively, from a simple rotational diagram
analysis. Conversely, NHCOCH was not detected down to a relative
abundance of a few . B1 and B2 appear to be among the richest
Galactic sources of HNCO and NHCHO molecules. A tight linear correlation
between their abundances is observed, suggesting that the two species are
chemically related. Comparison with astrochemical models favours molecule
formation on ice grain mantles, with NHCHO generated from hydrogenation of
HNCO.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS Main Journal.

Effect of hydrothermal carbonization and torrefaction on spent coffee grounds
Received: February 1st, 2021 ; Accepted: March 28th, 2021 ; Published: April 6th, 2021 ; Correspondence: [email protected] is one of the most tradable commodities worldwide with the current global
consumption of over 10 billion kilograms of coffee beans annually. At the same time, a significant
amount of solid residues, which are known as spent coffee grounds (SCG), is generated during
instant coffee manufacturing and coffee brewing. Those residues have a high potential in various
applications, yet they remain mostly unutilized. The current work presents the experimental
comparison of two pretreatment technologies - hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and
torrefaction - for converting SCG into a valuable char. The results showed that low-temperature
torrefaction (< 250 °C) has a negligible effect on feedstock properties due to initial pre-processing
of coffee beans. However, the energy conversion efficiency of torrefaction at higher temperatures
is comparable with that of HTC. The average energy yields for high-temperature torrefaction
(> 250 °C) and HTC were on the level of 88%. Devolatilization and depolymerization reactions
reduce oxygen and increase carbon contents during both processes: chars after torrefaction at
300 °C and HTC at 240 °C had 23–28% more carbon and 43–46% less oxygen than the feedstock.
Both pretreatment methods led to a comparable increase in energy density: the highest HHV of
31.03 MJ kg-1
for torrefaction at 300 °C and 32.33 MJ kg-1
for HTC at 240 °C, which is similar
to HHV of anthracite. The results showed that both processes can be effectively used to convert
SCG into energy-dense char, even though HTC led to slightly higher energy densification rates
Microscopic mass estimations
The quest to build a mass formula which have in it the most relevant
microscopic contributions is analyzed. Inspired in the successful Duflo-Zuker
mass description, the challenges to describe the shell closures in a more
transparent but equally powerful formalism are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics G, Focus issue

Shedding light on the formation of the pre-biotic molecule formamide with ASAI
Formamide (NH2CHO) has been proposed as a pre-biotic precursor with a key
role in the emergence of life on Earth. While this molecule has been observed
in space, most of its detections correspond to high-mass star-forming regions.
Motivated by this lack of investigation in the low-mass regime, we searched for
formamide, as well as isocyanic acid (HNCO), in 10 low- and intermediate-mass
pre-stellar and protostellar objects. The present work is part of the IRAM
Large Programme ASAI (Astrochemical Surveys At IRAM), which makes use of
unbiased broadband spectral surveys at millimetre wavelengths. We detected HNCO
in all the sources and NH2CHO in five of them. We derived their abundances and
analysed them together with those reported in the literature for high-mass
sources. For those sources with formamide detection, we found a tight and
almost linear correlation between HNCO and NH2CHO abundances, with their ratio
being roughly constant -between 3 and 10- across 6 orders of magnitude in
luminosity. This suggests the two species are chemically related. The sources
without formamide detection, which are also the coldest and devoid of hot
corinos, fall well off the correlation, displaying a much larger amount of HNCO
relative to NH2CHO. Our results suggest that, while HNCO can be formed in the
gas phase during the cold stages of star formation, NH2CHO forms most
efficiently on the mantles of dust grains at these temperatures, where it
remains frozen until the temperature rises enough to sublimate the icy grain
mantles. We propose hydrogenation of HNCO as a likely formation route leading
to NH2CHO.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. Accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal

Force of Beauty or Object of Desire? The Priming Effects of Makeup Video Advertisements on Self-Objectification in College Women
Women are too often valued for their beauty and have shifted their focus from character to body improvement (Brumberg, 1998). Objectification theory (Frederickson & Roberts, 1997) posits that sexual objectification socializes females to evaluate themselves based on looks. Self-objectification is the attempt to control this external perception by monitoring one’s physical appearance. Women are more likely to think “How do I look?” than “What am I capable of?”
The priming effects of positive and negative body-focused makeup advertisements on college-aged women’s level of self-objectification were examined in two separate studies. In study one, 87 participants viewing positive vs. negative advertisements reported more traits and abilities; this was especially true for high self-objectifiers. Participants viewing positive advertisements reported more positive emotions, suggesting the salutary role that positive messaging may play. Results were replicated in study two, with 172 participants who viewed positive vs. negative advertisements reporting significantly fewer body shape statements, more trait and abilities, as well as more physical competence statements. In addition, individuals who viewed advertisements with non-objectifying content responded with a significantly greater number of positively valenced statements and significantly fewer negative statements about themselves in comparison to women who viewed objectifying advertisements. These results suggest that marketers should eschew advertising that sexually objectifies women and promotes unattainable beauty goals. Future research should evaluate cumulative and long-term effects of advertisement and examine whether exposure that leads to lower levels of objectification also minimizes negative consequences associated with objectifying media influences (e.g., body shame, depression, eating disorder)
On the Solvency of Nations: Cross-Country Evidence on the Dynamics of External Adjustment
We test the hypothesis that net foreign asset positions are consistent with external solvency and examine the dynamics of external adjustment using data for 50 countries over the 1970-2006 period. Our analysis adapts Bohn's (2007) error-correction reaction function approach - which tests for a negative long-run relationship between net exports (NX) and net foreign assets (NFA) as a sufficiency condition for the intertemporal budget constraint to hold - to a dynamic panel framework. Pooled Mean Group (PMG) and Mean Group error-correction estimation yield evidence of a statistically significant, negative response of NX to NFA. Moreover, we cannot reject the hypothesis that the response is largely homogeneous across countries. Our sensitivity analysis shows that the countries with relatively weaker fundamentals need to respond more strongly to the changes in NFA to keep their NFAs on a sustainable path
