    CSI 2264: Simultaneous optical and X-ray variability in pre-Main Sequence stars. I: Time resolved X-ray spectral analysis during optical dips and accretion bursts in stars with disks

    Pre-main sequence stars are variable sources. In stars with disks, this variability is related to the morphology of the inner circumstellar region (<0.1 AU) and that of the photosphere and corona, all impossible to be spatially resolved with present day techniques. This has been the main motivation for the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264. In this paper, we focus on the stars with disks. We analyze the X-ray spectral properties extracted during optical bursts and dips in order to unveil the nature of these phenomena. We analyze simultaneous CoRoT and Chandra/ACIS-I observations to search for coherent optical and X-ray flux variability in stars with disks. Then, stars are analyzed in two different samples. In stars with variable extinction, we look for a simultaneous increase of optical extinction and X-ray absorption during the optical dips; in stars with accretion bursts, we search for soft X-ray emission and increasing X-ray absorption during the bursts. Results. We find evidence for coherent optical and X-ray flux variability among the stars with variable extinction. In 9/24 stars with optical dips, we observe a simultaneous increase of X-ray absorption and optical extinction. In seven dips, it is possible to calculate the NH/AV ratio in order to infer the composition of the obscuring material. In 5/20 stars with optical accretion bursts, we observe increasing soft X-ray emission during the bursts that we associate to the emission of accreting gas. It is not surprising that these properties are not observed in all the stars with dips and bursts, since favorable geometric configurations are required. The observed variable absorption during the dips is mainly due to dust-free material in accretion streams. In stars with accretion bursts, we observe on average a larger soft X-ray spectral component not observed in non accreting stars.Comment: Accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    The role of dredge-up in double white dwarf mergers

    We present the results of an investigation of the dredge-up and mixing during the merger of two white dwarfs with different chemical compositions by conducting hydrodynamic simulations of binary mergers for three representative mass ratios. In all the simulations, the total mass of the two white dwarfs is ≲1.0 M⊙\lesssim1.0~{\rm M_\odot}. Mergers involving a CO and a He white dwarf have been suggested as a possible formation channel for R Coronae Borealis type stars, and we are interested in testing if such mergers lead to conditions and outcomes in agreement with observations. Even if the conditions during the merger and subsequent nucleosynthesis favor the production of 18O^{18}{\mathrm O}, the merger must avoid dredging up large amounts of 16O^{16}{\mathrm O}, or else it will be difficult to produce sufficient 18O^{18}{\mathrm O} to explain the oxygen ratio observed to be of order unity. We performed a total of 9 simulations using two different grid-based hydrodynamics codes using fixed and adaptive meshes, and one smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code. We find that in most of the simulations, >10−2 M⊙>10^{-2}~{\rm M_\odot} of 16O^{16}{\mathrm O} is indeed dredged up during the merger. However, in SPH simulations where the accretor is a hybrid He/CO white dwarf with a ∼0.1 M⊙\sim 0.1~{\rm M_\odot} layer of helium on top, we find that no 16O^{16}{\mathrm O} is being dredged up, while in the q=0.8q=0.8 simulation <10−4 M⊙<10^{-4}~{\rm M_\odot} of 16O^{16}{\mathrm O} has been brought up, making a WD binary consisting of a hybrid CO/He WD and a companion He WD an excellent candidate for the progenitor of RCB stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Orbital maintenance concepts were examined in an effort to determine a cost effective orbital maintenance system compatible with the space transportation system. An on-orbit servicer maintenance system is recommended as the most cost effective system. A pivoting arm on-orbit servicer was selected and a preliminary design was prepared. It is indicated that orbital maintenance does not have any significant impact on the space transportation system

    Heart rate variability (HRV), a class of metrics derived from variability in R-R intervals typically measured using electrocardiography (ECG), has implications for cardiovascular and neurological health1. Recently, HRV was used to track the recovery of athletes after exercise training due to its ability to noninvasively monitor the autonomic nervous system (ANS)2. Exercise training generally has a positive impact on the ANS by reducing resting heart rate and increasing cardiac vagal tone at rest3. However, overexertion from excessive workout sessions can counteract the benefits of regular exercise and reduce HRV4. Unfortunately, routine, remote ECG HRV monitoring is limited due to portability, cost, and loss of accuracy. Various groups have attempted to address the limitations of ECG monitored HRV by estimating HRV with simpler photoplethysmography (PPG) technology5. Transmittance PPG, the signal used in pulse oximetry, measures changes in intensity due to light absorption caused by the dilation and constriction of arteries and arterioles in the finger due to pulsatile blood flow. Alas, HRV approximated from PPG finger measurements loses accuracy due to significant peak time delays related to various factors such as arterial stiffness, vascular tone, and height6.     Polyphase Equiangular Tight Frames and Abelian Generalized Quadrangles

    An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. ETFs arise in various applications, such as waveform design for wireless communication, compressed sensing, quantum information theory and algebraic coding theory. In a recent paper, signature matrices of ETFs were constructed from abelian distance regular covers of complete graphs. We extend this work, constructing ETF synthesis operators from abelian generalized quadrangles, and vice versa. This produces a new infinite family of complex ETFs as well as a new proof of the existence of certain generalized quadrangles. This work involves designing matrices whose entries are polynomials over a finite abelian group. As such, it is related to the concept of a polyphase matrix of a finite filter bank

    The majority of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell research has focused on attacking cancer cells. Here, we show that targeting the tumor-promoting, nontransformed stromal cells using CAR T cells may offer several advantages. We developed a retroviral CAR construct specific for the mouse fibroblast activation protein (FAP), comprising a single-chain Fv FAP [monoclonal antibody (mAb) 73.3] with the CD8α hinge and transmembrane regions, and the human CD3ζ and 4-1BB activation domains. The transduced muFAP-CAR mouse T cells secreted IFN-γ and killed FAP-expressing 3T3 target cells specifically. Adoptively transferred 73.3-FAP-CAR mouse T cells selectively reduced FAP(hi) stromal cells and inhibited the growth of multiple types of subcutaneously transplanted tumors in wild-type, but not FAP-null immune-competent syngeneic mice. The antitumor effects could be augmented by multiple injections of the CAR T cells, by using CAR T cells with a deficiency in diacylglycerol kinase, or by combination with a vaccine. A major mechanism of action of the muFAP-CAR T cells was the augmentation of the endogenous CD8(+) T-cell antitumor responses. Off-tumor toxicity in our models was minimal following muFAP-CAR T-cell therapy. In summary, inhibiting tumor growth by targeting tumor stroma with adoptively transferred CAR T cells directed to FAP can be safe and effective, suggesting that further clinical development of anti-human FAP-CAR is warranted

    Rumen Undegradable Protein and Bambermycins Supplementation of Calves Grazing Corn Residue

    Steer calves grazing non- irrigated corn residue were supplemented with a corn residue and by- product pellet that contained either Soypass, soybean meal, or processed soybean meal at a rate of 4 lb / d. Additionally, a supplement was fed at 1 lb / d that provided 0 or 20 mg / steer daily of bambermycins (Gainpro®). There was no interaction between bambermycins inclusion and pellet type. Likewise, there was no effect of pellet type or bambermycins on ending BW or ADG. In order to maximize gain of calves grazing corn residue it is important to provide a supplement that ensures adequate levels of both energy and rumen undegradeable protein
