    Erosion and deposition in interplain channels of the Maury channel system

    Large turbidity currents originating on the insular margin of southern lceland have flowed clown a 2 500 km-long pathway comprising rise valleys, unchanneled plains and segments of erosional and depositional deep-sea channels that are collectively called the Maury Channel system. Two steep interplain reaches of the channel have been eut up to 100 m through volcanogenic turbidites of probable La te Pleistocene age. Near-bottom observations with side-scan sonars and profllers across the upper channels (at 59°24\u27N, 18°50\u27W, 2 750 m depth) and at the lower interplain channel (around 56°23\u27N, 24°25\u27W, 3 340 m depth) defmed their structure and morphology. The upper channels, and a tributary to the lower channel, start as broad, shallow depressions that deepen and narrow downstream. The lower channel bas a pattern of anastomosing branches that probably evolved by head ward extension of low-angle tribu taries to the original sinuous channel, and its branches are at different stages of development. Several hundred bottom photographs show well-indurated rocks on channel walls and floors, with such flysch-like characteristics as cyclic graded bedding, clastic dikes, and syndepositional deformation. The lower-channel branches have been eut by turbidity currents with speeds of 5- 12 rn/sec., and combined discharges exceeding 1 x 106 m3 /sec. Bedrock erosion in and around the channels bas proceeded by intense corrasion and fluid stressing, and is marked by such small-scale effects as rock polishing, fluting, pot-holing and ledge recession. Rockfalls have caused retreat of steep channel walls, and conglomerate or pcbbly mudstone deposits suggest that debris flows have been locally active. Sorne coarse debris delivered by these processes and clay halls torn from semi-lithifled outcrops remain in the channels, but the channel f1ll is generally thin, with a patch y veneer of pelagie mud that bas accumulated since the last major turbidity current event. The surfaces of the unconsolidated s~diment have been smoothed and lineated, or moulded into seo ur moats and occasional fields of ripples, by thermohaline currents

    The NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) has undertaken a research program to develop the navigation, guidance, control, and flight management technology base needed by Government and industry in establishing systems design concepts and operating procedures for VTOL short-haul transportation systems in the 1980s time period. The VALT (VTOL Automatic Landing Technology) Program encompasses the investigation of operating systems and piloting techniques associated with VTOL operations under all-weather conditions from downtown vertiports; the definition of terminal air traffic and airspace requirements; and the development of avionics including navigation, guidance, controls, and displays for automated takeoff, cruise, and landing operations. The program includes requirements analyses, design studies, systems development, ground simulation, and flight validation efforts

    Compositional changes in particulate matter on the Iceland Rise, through the water column, and at the seafloor

    Local resuspension of sediments along the Iceland Rise was substantiated by the collection in sediment traps of large particles whose source is clearly the seafloor. These resuspended components included benthic foraminifera, iron-oxide coated planktonic foraminifera, the glacial, subpolar assemblage planktonic foraminifera (N. pachyderma (sinistral)), and an increase in the volcanic glass and mineral grain/aggregate component with proximity to the seafloor.The horizontal flux of particulate matter in the near-bottom nepheloid layer through the region was ≃200 kg/s. The apparent vertical flux of sediment calculated from sediment traps at 500 m above bottom (mab) was an order of magnitude less than Recent sediment accumulation rates, suggesting a large fraction of the sediments in the region was brought in horizontally via bottom currents or turbidity currents.The compositional changes with depth in the material collected in the sediment traps indicated that most of the changes in the material due to dissolution, degradation, and decomposition occurred while the material resided on the seafloor or during periods of resuspension rather than during transit through the water column. Regional variations in clay mineralogy, organic carbon and carbonate content indicated preferential preservation in cores from a channel in the study region or preferential decomposition, dissolution, and/or erosion of the surface sediments beneath the bottom current

    Examination of Surface Temperature Modification by Open-Top Chambers along Moisture and Latitudinal Gradients in Arctic Alaska Using Thermal Infrared Photography

    Passive warming manipulation methodologies, such as open-top chambers (OTCs), are a meaningful approach for interpretation of impacts of climate change on the Arctic tundra biome. The magnitude of OTC warming has been studied extensively, revealing an average plot-level warming of air temperature that ranges between 1 and 3 °C as measured by shielded resistive sensors or thermocouples. Studies have also shown that the amount of OTC warming depends in part on location climate, vegetation, and soil properties. While digital infrared thermometers have been employed in a few comparisons, most of the focus of the effectiveness of OTC warming has been on air or soil temperature rather than tissue or surface temperatures, which directly translate to metabolism. Here we used thermal infrared (TIR) photography to quantify tissue and surface temperatures and their spatial variability at a previously unavailable resolution (3–6 mm2). We analyzed plots at three locations that are part of the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX)-Arctic Observing Network (AON-ITEX) network along both moisture and latitudinal gradients spanning from the High Arctic (Barrow, AK, USA) to the Low Arctic (Toolik Lake, AK, USA). Our results show a range of OTC surface warming from 2.65 to 1.27 °C (31%–10%) at our three sites. The magnitude of surface warming detected by TIR imagery in this study was comparable to increases in air temperatures previously reported for these sites. However, the thermal images revealed wide ranges of surface temperatures within the OTCs, with some surfaces well above ambient unevenly distributed within the plots under sunny conditions. We note that analyzing radiometric temperature may be an alternative for future studies that examine data acquired at the same time of day from sites that are in close geographic proximity to avoid the requirement of emissivity or atmospheric correction for validation of results. We foresee future studies using TIR photography to describe species-level thermodynamics that could prove highly valuable toward a better understanding of species-specific responses to climate change in the Arctic

Maximum gross thrust loss occurred under conditions of zero cooling-air flow and was as much as 35 percent below nozzle jet thrust. For minimum thrust loss, ejector should be designed with as low diameter and spacing ratio as possible

    The mtDNA diversity of captive ruffed lemurs (Varecia spp.): Implications for conservation

    Ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata and V. rubra) are considered Critically Endangered, and genetic studies are therefore needed for assessing the conservation value of captive populations. Using 280 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequences, we studied the genetic diversity and structure of captive ruffed lemurs in Madagascar, Europe and North America. We found 10 new haplotypes, one from the European captive V. rubra population, three from captive V. variegata subcincta (one from Europe and two from Madagascar), and six from other captive V. variegata in Madagascar. There was low mtDNA genetic diversity in the European and North American captive populations of V. variegata. Several founder individuals shared the same mtDNA haplotype, and therefore should perhaps not be considered as unrelated founders for making breeding recommendations. The captive population in Madagascar has high genetic diversity, including haplotypes not yet identified in wild populations. The likely geographical provenance of founders of captive populations was determined by comparison with previous studies; all reported haplotypes from captive ruffed lemurs were identical to, or clustered with, haplotypes from wild populations located north of the Mangoro River in Madagascar. Effective conservation strategies for wild populations, with potentially unidentified genetic diversity, should still be considered the priority for conserving ruffed lemurs. However, our results illustrate that the captive population in Madagascar has conservation value as a source of potential release stock for reintroduction or reinforcement projects, and that cross-regional transfers within the global captive population could increase the genetic diversity and therefore the conservation value of each regional population

    Preliminary Assessment of Nonpoint Source Related Ambient Toxicity in and around Lower Galveston Bay

    In 1991 aquaculture researchers at the old SeaArama facility in Galveston believed that mortality they were observing in their larval shrimp cultures was a result of toxicity of ambient water in the Gulf of Mexico. The researchers utilized near-shore Gulf of Mexico water for rearing larval shrimp. They hypothesized that 2-butoxyethanol was the toxic agent, originating from Galveston Bay waters flowing into the Gulf following heavy rainfall. However, data were not available to support this hypothesis. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) in a combined effort decided to conduct a water quality study to investigate these concerns. The purposes of the study were to assess the potential for ambient toxicity in lower Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico following rainfall events, and to determine the need for additional studies for a more complete assessment. A total of five stations were sampled during three sampling events: (I) November 1992, (II) June 1993 and (III) February 1994. Sampling stations included Galveston Bay near Redfish Reef, Galveston Channel, and near-shore Gulf of Mexico off Galveston Island. Two additional industrialized areas were also sampled, Texas City Ship Channel and Chocolate Bay. An attempt was made to sample following significant rainfall in the Galveston Bay watershed to assess the potential impact of nonpoint source pollution on bay water quality. Ambient surface water samples were collected for chemical analysis of conventional parameters, EPA priority pollutants (heavy metals, VOCs, semi-volatiles, pesticides and PCBS), and chronic toxicity testing with mysids and inland silversides. Overall, chemical water quality was good for all sites. The chemical analysis yielded no violations of state water quality standards. Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate at the Gulf of Mexico station exceeded the EPA criterion for protection of human health in February 1994, although the significance is doubtful as this is a common lab contaminant. In November 1992 dissolved nickel approached the state's chronic water quality standard at Chocolate Bay. Chronic toxicity data for mysids and inland silversides, although limited, did not indicate significant chronic effects to either species. Because this was a screening study data should be considered preliminary. Chemical and toxicity data indicate that aquatic life uses in the open bay areas sampled are not impacted by toxic substances originating from non-point sources. The need for future open bay type nonpoint source surface water studies is considered low. Studies to assess localized and/or episodic effects of urban storm water discharges and industrial and agricultural runoff (e.g., western near-shore areas of Galveston Bay; Chocolate Bayou upstream of the area sampled in this study) would be of greater value

    The institutional shaping of management: in the tracks of English individualism

    Globalisation raises important questions about the shaping of economic action by cultural factors. This article explores the formation of what is seen by some as a prime influence on the formation of British management: individualism. Drawing on a range of historical sources, it argues for a comparative approach. In this case, the primary comparison drawn is between England and Scotland. The contention is that there is a systemic approach to authority in Scotland that can be contrasted to a personal approach in England. An examination of the careers of a number of Scottish pioneers of management suggests the roots of this systemic approach in practices of church governance. Ultimately this systemic approach was to take a secondary role to the personal approach engendered by institutions like the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but it found more success in the different institutional context of the USA. The complexities of dealing with historical evidence are stressed, as is the value of taking a comparative approach. In this case this indicates a need to take religious practice as seriously as religious belief as a source of transferable practice. The article suggests that management should not be seen as a simple response to economic imperatives, but as shaped by the social and cultural context from which it emerges
