    Technology\u27s impact on student learning in grades K-8

    Many research studies have found that educational technology that is accessible, equitable, and properly used can make a significant difference in students\u27 academic performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if Wildwood Crest Memorial School had a well-orchestrated technology plan, which addressed the technological needs of students and teachers and to determine what impact technology had on student learning. A survey developed by the Southeast and Islands Regional Technology in Education Consortium (SEIR*TEC) was used to collect data from students and teachers. An analysis of the data found that the district goals and objectives were being met with the integration of technology into the curriculum and instruction. Technology as a tool was used to stimulate higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. Students\u27 mastery of academic content improved significantly utilizing collaborative and globalized learning and, as such, accelerated, enriched, and deepened students\u27 understanding of the curriculum

    Motivations matter: Behavioural determinants of preferences for remote and unfamiliar environmental goods

    Discrete choice experiments (DCE) are one of the main methods for the valuation of non-market environmental goods. However, concerns regarding the validity of choice responses obtained in such surveys remain, particularly in surveys dealing with environmental goods remote from and unfamiliar to respondents. This study assesses behavioural determinants of preferences for conservation benefits of a marine protected area on the Dogger Bank, a shallow sandbank in the southern North Sea in an attempt to assess construct validity of survey responses. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM) are employed to empirically measure constructs that predict stated choices. The study finds that identified protest respondents score significantly lower on most TPB and NAM components than non-protesters. Results further show that components of both the TPB and the NAM robustly predict choice behaviour. The inclusion of the TPB components improves the predictive power of the estimation model more than the NAM components. In an additional latent class logit model, TPB and NAM components plausibly explain different patterns of WTP for conservation benefits of an offshore marine protected area. These findings support construct validity of stated choice data regarding the valuation of remote and unfamiliar environmental goods

    Newly Identified Enterovirus C Genotypes, Identified in the Netherlands through Routine Sequencing of All Enteroviruses Detected in Clinical Materials from 2008 to 2015

    Enteroviruses (EVs) are a group of human and animal viruses that are capable of causing a variety of clinical syndromes. Different genotypes classified into species can be distinguished on the basis of sequence divergence in the VP1 capsid-coding region. Apparently new genotypes are discovered regularly, often as incidental findings in studies investigating respiratory syndromes or as part of poliovirus surveillance. Recently, some EVs have become recognized as significant respiratory pathogens, and a number of new genotypes belonging to species C have been identified. The circulation of these newly identified species C EVs, such as EV-C104, EV-C105, EV-C109, and EV-C117, nevertheless appears to be limited. In this report, we show the results of routine genotyping of all enteroviruses detected in our tertiary care hospital between January 2008 and April 2015. We detected 365 EVs belonging to 40 genotypes. Interestingly, several newly identified species C EVs were detected during the study period. Sequencing of the 5' untranslated region (5'UTR) of these viruses shows divergence in this region, which is a target region in many detection assays

    Synergistic effects of targeted PI3K signaling inhibition and chemotherapy in liposarcoma.

    While liposarcoma is the second most common soft tissue malignant tumor, the molecular pathogenesis in this malignancy is poorly understood. Our goal was therefore to expand the understanding of molecular mechanisms that drive liposarcoma and identify therapeutically-susceptible genetic alterations. We studied a cohort of high-grade liposarcomas and benign lipomas across multiple disease sites, as well as two liposarcoma cell lines, using multiplexed mutational analysis. Nucleic acids extracted from diagnostic patient tissue were simultaneously interrogated for 150 common mutations across 15 essential cancer genes using a clinically-validated platform for cancer genotyping. Western blot analysis was implemented to detect activation of downstream pathways. Liposarcoma cell lines were used to determine the effects of PI3K targeted drug treatment with or without chemotherapy. We identified mutations in the PIK3CA gene in 4 of 18 human liposarcoma patients (22%). No PIK3CA mutations were identified in benign lipomas. Western blot analysis confirmed downstream activation of AKT in both PIK3CA mutant and non-mutant liposarcoma samples. PI-103, a dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor, effectively inhibited the activation of the PI3K/AKT in liposarcoma cell lines and induced apoptosis. Importantly, combination with PI-103 treatment strongly synergized the growth-inhibitory effects of the chemotherapy drugs doxorubicin and cisplatin in liposarcoma cells. Taken together, these findings suggest that activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway is an important cancer mechanism in liposarcoma. Targeting the PI3K/AKT/pathway with small molecule inhibitors in combination with chemotherapy could be exploited as a novel strategy in the treatment of liposarcoma

    How large is the gap between present and efficient transport prices in Europe?

    In this paper we analyse the gap between present transport prices and efficient transport prices. Efficient transport prices are those prices that maximise economic welfare, including external costs (congestion, air pollution, accidents). The methodology is applied to six urban and interregional case studies using one common optimal pricing model. The case studies cover passenger as well as freight transport and cover all modes. We find that prices need to be raised most for peak urban passenger car transport and to a lesser extent for interregional road transport. Optimal pricing results for public transport are more mixed. We show that current external costs on congested roads are a bad guide for optimal taxes and tolls: the optimal toll that takes into account the reaction of demand is often less than one third of the present marginal external cost.transport pricing; external costs; social costs; congestion pricing

    Prediction of the annuloplasty ring size in patients undergoing mitral valve repair using real-time three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography

    Aims We sought to investigate the additional value of real-time three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography (RT 3D TOE)-guided sizing for predicting annuloplasty ring size during mitral valve repair. Methods and results In 53 patients undergoing elective mitral valve repair, an RT 3D TOE was performed pre- and post-operatively. The digitally stored loops were imported into a software for mitral valve assessment. The annuloplasty ring size was predicted by superimposing computer-aided design (CAD) models of annuloplasty rings onto Live 3D zoom loops, measurement of the intercommissural distance, or the height of the anterior mitral leaflet. The surgeon implanted the annuloplasty ring according to the usual surgical technique and was blinded to the echocardiographic measurement results. Pre-operative correlation between the selected ring size with mitral valve assessment and the actual implanted annuloplasty ring size was 0.91. The correlation for measurement of the intercommissural distance was 0.55 and for measurement of the height of the anterior mitral leaflet 0.75. The post-operative correlation with the actual implanted ring size was 0.96 for mitral valve assessment, 0.92 for intercommissural distance, and 0.79 for the anterior mitral leaflet height. Conclusion Superimposition of annuloplasty ring CAD models on the Live 3D zoom loops of the mitral valve using mitral valve assessment is superior to two-dimensional measurements of the intercommissural distance or the height of the anterior mitral leaflet in predicting correct annuloplasty ring size
