Domiciliary Care: The Formal and Informal Labour Process
Domiciliary carers are paid care workers who travel to the homes of older people to assist with personal routines. Increasingly, over the past 20 years, the delivery of domiciliary care has been organised according to market principles and portrayed as the ideal type of formal care; offering cost savings to local authorities and independence for older people. Crucially, the work of the former ‘home help’ is transformed as domiciliary carers are now subject to the imperative of private, competitive accumulation which necessitates a constant search for increases in labour productivity. Drawing on qualitative data from domiciliary carers, managers and stakeholders, this article highlights the commodification of caring labour and reveals the constraints, contradictions and challenges of paid care work. Barren Lands and Barren Bodies In Navajo Nation: Indian Women WARN about Uranium, Genetics, and Sterilization
Founded by Native American women in 1974, Women of All Red Nations (WARN) insisted that the ongoing Indian public health crisis could not be properly understood exclusively within the context of the exploitation and pollution of the physical environment. It required as well an understanding of the larger context of Indian health issues evolving out of past and present cultural and political changes. This article focuses on selected health, threats affecting the Dine, or the People, as Navajo Indians call themselves, living in Dine Bikeyah (Navajo Nation) during the mid to late 20th century. Navajo history is marked by a series of catastrophes befalling the health of its people and lands, and reactions by both the Dine and the federal government. The 20th century Navajo story combines the concurrent tragedies of forced Indian sterilizations with the calamitous health consequences of uranium exploitation that continue into the 21st century. This context must not be ignored when assessing the difficulties involved in establishing a trusting relationship between the Navajo people and outside researchers and health care providers
Vigorous star formation in a bulge-dominated ERO at z = 1.34
We present near-IR spectroscopy of three Extremely Red Objects (EROs) using
the OHS/CISCO spectrograph at Subaru telescope. One target exhibits a strong
emission line which we identify as H-alpha at z = 1.34. Using new and existing
ground-based optical and near-IR imaging, and archival HST imaging, we argue
that this target is essentially an elliptical galaxy, with an old stellar
population of around 4E11 solar masses, but having a dust-enshrouded
star-forming component with a SFR of some 50--100 solar masses per yr. There is
no evidence that the galaxy contains an AGN. Analysis of a further two targets,
which do not exhibit any features in our near-IR spectra, suggests that one is
a quiescent galaxy in the redshift range 1.2 < z < 1.6, but that the other
cannot be conclusively categorised as either star-forming or quiescent.
Even though our first target has many of the properties of an old elliptical,
the ongoing star formation means that it cannot have formed_all_ of its stellar
population at high redshift. While we cannot infer any robust values for the
star formation rate in ellipticals at z > 1 from this one object, we argue that
the presence of an object with such a high SFR in such a small sample suggests
that a non-negligible fraction of the elliptical galaxy population may have
formed a component of their stellar population at redshifts z ~ 1--2. We
suggest that this is evidence for ongoing star formation in the history of

A source of extinguishing agent coupled to the opposite end of the tubular body is fed through and passes through passages adjacent the head for delivering the extinguishing agent to the interior of the structure. A slidable mass is carried on the tubular body on a remote end of the tubular body from the penetrating head. By manipulating the slidable mass and bringing such in contact with an abutment the force imparted to the tubular body causes the head to penetrate the structure
Neurovascular damage in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis: a target for pharmacological control
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is composed of a continuous endothelial layer with pericytes and astrocytes in close proximity to offer homeostatic control to the neurovasculature. The human demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis and the animal counterpart experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) are characterized by enhanced permeability of the BBB facilitating oedema formation and recruitment of systemically derived inflammatory-type cells into target tissues to mediate eventual myelin loss and neuronal dysfunction. EAE is considered a useful model for examining the pathology which culminates in loss of BBB integrity and the disease is now proving valuable in assessing compounds for efficacy in limiting damage at neurovascular sites. The precise mechanisms culminating in EAE-induced BBB breakdown are unclear although several potentially disruptive mediators have been implicated and have been previously identified as potent effectors of cerebrovascular damage in non-disease related conditions of the central nervous system. The review considers evidence that common mechanisms may mediate cerebrovascular permeability changes irrespective of the initial insult and discusses therapeutic approaches for the control of BBB leakage in the demyelinating diseases
Can dry merging explain the size evolution of early-type galaxies?
The characteristic size of early-type galaxies (ETGs) of given stellar mass
is observed to increase significantly with cosmic time, from redshift z>2 to
the present. A popular explanation for this size evolution is that ETGs grow
through dissipationless ("dry") mergers, thus becoming less compact. Combining
N-body simulations with up-to-date scaling relations of local ETGs, we show
that such an explanation is problematic, because dry mergers do not decrease
the galaxy stellar-mass surface-density enough to explain the observed size
evolution, and also introduce substantial scatter in the scaling relations.
Based on our set of simulations, we estimate that major and minor dry mergers
increase half-light radius and projected velocity dispersion with stellar mass
(M) as M^(1.09+/-0.29) and M^(0.07+/-0.11), respectively. This implies that: 1)
if the high-z ETGs are indeed as dense as estimated, they cannot evolve into
present-day ETGs via dry mergers; 2) present-day ETGs cannot have assembled
more than ~45% of their stellar mass via dry mergers. Alternatively, dry
mergers could be reconciled with the observations if there was extreme fine
tuning between merger history and galaxy properties, at variance with our
assumptions. Full cosmological simulations will be needed to evaluate whether

Phase Transitions in Quantum Dots
We perform Hartree-Fock calculations to show that quantum dots (i.e. two
dimensional systems of up to twenty interacting electrons in an external
parabolic potential) undergo a gradual transition to a spin-polarized Wigner
crystal with increasing magnetic field strength. The phase diagram and ground
state energies have been determined. We tried to improve the ground state of
the Wigner crystal by introducing a Jastrow ansatz for the wavefunction and
performing a variational Monte Carlo calculation. The existence of so called
magic numbers was also investigated. Finally, we also calculated the heat
capacity associated with the rotational degree of freedom of deformed many-body

Coronary computed tomography angiography of spontaneous coronary artery dissection: A case report and review of the literature

Of particular clinical interest is its ability to non-invasively evaluate coronary arteries in patients presenting to the emergency room. In acute coronary syndromes, myocardial ischemia is most often caused by atherosclerosis. We present a case of a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), which was initially evaluated with MDCT and followed by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and invasive coronary angiography (ICA). We discuss the findings and role of each modality with particular attention to coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) in the diagnosis and management of SCAD. As the use of CCTA in the emergency department continues to rise, radiologists must become familiar with CT appearance of SCAD. CASE REPORT: We report the multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) findings in a case of spontaneous coronary artery dissection of the left anterior descending artery in a previously healthy 23-year-old man. The role of coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) in diagnosis and management of this potentially life-threatening condition is discussed. CONCLUSIONS: In the clinical setting of acute coronary syndrome, SCAD must be a consideration, particularly in young patients without clear risk factors for coronary artery disease and in women in the peripartum period. CCTA is a very helpful diagnostic tool to diagnose the condition in a non-invasive manner and to follow up after treatment
