Climate Science, Development Practice, and Policy Interactions in Dryland Agroecological Systems
The literature on drought, livelihoods, and poverty suggests that dryland residents are especially vulnerable to climate change. However, assessing this vulnerability and sharing lessons between dryland communities on how to reduce vulnerability has proven difficult because of multiple definitions of vulnerability, complexities in quantification, and the temporal and spatial variability inherent in dryland agroecological systems. In this closing editorial, we review how we have addressed these challenges through a series of structured, multiscale, and interdisciplinary vulnerability assessment case studies from drylands in West Africa, southern Africa, Mediterranean Europe, Asia, and Latin America. These case studies adopt a common vulnerability framework but employ different approaches to measuring and assessing vulnerability. By comparing methods and results across these cases, we draw out the following key lessons: (1) Our studies show the utility of using consistent conceptual frameworks for vulnerability assessments even when quite different methodological approaches are taken; (2) Utilizing narratives and scenarios to capture the dynamics of dryland agroecological systems shows that vulnerability to climate change may depend more on access to financial, political, and institutional assets than to exposure to environmental change; (3) Our analysis shows that although the results of quantitative models seem authoritative, they may be treated too literally as predictions of the future by policy makers looking for evidence to support different strategies. In conclusion, we acknowledge there is a healthy tension between bottom-up/ qualitative/place-based approaches and top-down/quantitative/generalizable approaches, and we encourage researchers from different disciplines with different disciplinary languages, to talk, collaborate, and engage effectively with each other and with stakeholders at all levels
4-Dimensional BF Theory as a Topological Quantum Field Theory
Starting from a Lie group G whose Lie algebra is equipped with an invariant
nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form, we show that 4-dimensional BF theory
with cosmological term gives rise to a TQFT satisfying a generalization of
Atiyah's axioms to manifolds equipped with principal G-bundle. The case G =
GL(4,R) is especially interesting because every 4-manifold is then naturally
equipped with a principal G-bundle, namely its frame bundle. In this case, the
partition function of a compact oriented 4-manifold is the exponential of its
signature, and the resulting TQFT is isomorphic to that constructed by Crane
and Yetter using a state sum model, or by Broda using a surgery presentation of

NGC 1866: First Spectroscopic Detection of Fast Rotating Stars in a Young LMC Cluster
High-resolution spectroscopic observations were taken of 29 extended main
sequence turn-off (eMSTO) stars in the young (200 Myr) LMC cluster, NGC
1866 using the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System and MSpec spectrograph on the
Magellan-Clay 6.5-m telescope. These spectra reveal the first direct detection
of rapidly rotating stars whose presence has only been inferred from
photometric studies. The eMSTO stars exhibit H-alpha emission (indicative of
Be-star decretion disks), others have shallow broad H-alpha absorption
(consistent with rotation 150 km s), or deep H-alpha core
absorption signaling lower rotation velocities (150 km s ).
The spectra appear consistent with two populations of stars - one rapidly

Cosmological Constant in LQG Vertex Amplitude
A new q-deformation of the Euclidean EPRL/FK vertex amplitude is proposed by
using the evaluation of the Vassiliev invariant associated with a 4-simplex
graph (related to two copies of quantum SU(2) group at different roots of
unity) embedded in a 3-sphere. We show that the large-j asymptotics of the
q-deformed vertex amplitude gives the Regge action with a cosmological
constant. In the end we also discuss its relation with a Chern-Simons theory on

We present a spinfoam formulation of Lorentzian quantum General Relativity.
The theory is based on a simple generalization of an Euclidean model defined in
terms of a field theory over a group. The model is an extension of a recently
introduced Lorentzian model, in which both timelike and spacelike components
are included. The spinfoams in the model, corresponding to quantized
4-geometries, carry a natural non-perturbative local causal structure induced
by the geometry of the algebra of the internal gauge (sl(2,C)). Amplitudes can
be expressed as integrals over the spacelike unit-vectors hyperboloid in
Minkowski space, or the imaginary Lobachevskian space.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur
Low Mass Companions for Five Solar-Type Stars from the Magellan Planet Search Program
We report low mass companions orbiting five Solar-type stars that have
emerged from the Magellan precision Doppler velocity survey, with minimum
(Msini) masses ranging from 1.2 to 25 Mjup. These nearby target stars range
from mildly metal-poor to metal-rich, and appear to have low chromospheric
activity. The companions to the brightest two of these stars have previously
been reported from the CORALIE survey. Four of these companions (HD 48265-b, HD
143361-b, HD 28185-b, HD 111232-b) are low-mass Jupiter-like planets in
eccentric intermediate and long-period orbits. On the other hand, the companion
to HD 43848 appears to be a long period brown dwarf in a very eccentric orbit.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ, 26 pages, 10 figures, 7 table
New fields on super Riemann surfaces
A new -dimensional super vector bundle which exists on any super
Riemann surface is described. Cross-sections of this bundle provide a new class
of fields on a super Riemann surface which closely resemble holomorphic
functions on a super Riemann surface, but which (in contrast to the case with
holomorphic functions) form spaces which have a well defined dimension which

Spacetime as a Feynman diagram: the connection formulation
Spin foam models are the path integral counterparts to loop quantized
canonical theories. In the last few years several spin foam models of gravity
have been proposed, most of which live on finite simplicial lattice spacetime.
The lattice truncates the presumably infinite set of gravitational degrees of
freedom down to a finite set. Models that can accomodate an infinite set of
degrees of freedom and that are independent of any background simplicial
structure, or indeed any a priori spacetime topology, can be obtained from the
lattice models by summing them over all lattice spacetimes. Here we show that
this sum can be realized as the sum over Feynman diagrams of a quantum field
theory living on a suitable group manifold, with each Feynman diagram defining
a particular lattice spacetime. We give an explicit formula for the action of
the field theory corresponding to any given spin foam model in a wide class
which includes several gravity models. Such a field theory was recently found
for a particular gravity model [De Pietri et al, hep-th/9907154]. Our work
generalizes this result as well as Boulatov's and Ooguri's models of three and
four dimensional topological field theories, and ultimately the old matrix
models of two dimensional systems with dynamical topology. A first version of
our result has appeared in a companion paper [gr-qc\0002083]: here we present a
new and more detailed derivation based on the connection formulation of the
