    The Time of Flight System of the AMS-02 Space Experiment

    The Time-of-Flight (TOF) system of the AMS detector gives the fast trigger to the read out electronics and measures velocity, direction and charge of the crossing particles. The new version of the detector (called AMS-02) will be installed on the International Space Station on March 2004. The fringing field of the AMS-02 superconducting magnet is 1.0÷2.51.0\div2.5 kG where the photomultiplers (PM) are installed. In order to be able to operate with this residual field, a new type of PM was chosen and the mechanical design was constrained by requiring to minimize the angle between the magnetic field vector and the PM axis. Due to strong field and to the curved light guides, the time resolution will be 150÷180150\div180 ps, while the new electronics will allow for a better charge measurement.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: results of the SPIN-UTI network

    BACKGROUND: Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective multicenter study. METHODS: The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. RESULTS: During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to 2017, 47.0% of HAIs has led to sepsis in 832 patients. Overall, 57.0% episodes were classified as sepsis, 20.5% as severe sepsis and 22.5% as septic shock. The most common isolated microorganisms from sepsis episodes were Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The case fatality rate increased with the severity of sepsis and the mean length of ICU-stay was significantly higher in patients with ICU-acquired sepsis than in patients without. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that ICU-acquired sepsis occurs frequently in Italian ICU patients and is associated with a high case fatality rate and increased length of stay. However, in order to explain these findings further analyses are needed in this population of ICU patient

    Inner approximations of stochastic programs for data-driven stochastic barrier function design

    This paper studies finite-horizon safety guarantees for discrete-time piece-wise affine systems with stochastic noise of unknown distributions. Our approach is based on a novel approach to synthesise a stochastic barrier function from noise data. In particular, we first build a chance-constraint tightening to obtain an inner approximation of a stochastic program. Then, we apply this methodology for stochastic barrier function design, yielding a robust linear program to which the scenario approach theory applies. In contrast to existing approaches, our method is data efficient as it only requires the number of data to be proportional to the logarithm in the negative inverse of the confidence level and is computationally efficient due to its reduction to linear programming. Furthermore, while state-of-the-art methods assume known statistics on the noise distribution, our approach does not require any information about it. We empirically evaluate the efficacy of our method on various verification benchmarks. Experiments show a significant improvement with respect to state-of-the-art, obtaining tighter certificates with a confidence that is several orders of magnitude higher

    Structure-Dependent Influence of Moisture on Resistive Switching Behavior of ZnO Thin Films

    Resistive switching mechanisms underlying memristive devices are widely investigated, and the importance as well as influence of ambient conditions on the electrical performances of memristive cells are already recognized. However, detailed understanding of the ambient effect on the switching mechanism still remains a challenge. This work presents an experimental investigation on the effect of moisture on resistive switching performances of ZnO-based electrochemical metallization memory cells. ZnO thin films are grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and radio frequency sputtering. Water molecules are observed to influence electrical resistance of ZnO by affecting the electronic conduction mechanism and by providing additional species for ionic conduction. By influencing dissolution and migration of ionic species underlying resistive switching events, moisture is reported to tune resistive switching parameters. In particular, the presence of H2O is responsible for a decrease of the forming and SET voltages and an increase of the ON/OFF resistance ratio in both CVD and sputtered films. The effect of moisture on resistive switching performance is found to be more pronounced in case of sputtered films where the reduced grain size is responsible for an increased adsorption of water molecules and an increased amount of possible pathways for ion migration

    Estimating dormant and active hematopoietic stem cell kinetics through extensive modeling of bromodeoxyuridine label-retaining cell dynamics.

    Bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are responsible for both lifelong daily maintenance of all blood cells and for repair after cell loss. Until recently the cellular mechanisms by which HSCs accomplish these two very different tasks remained an open question. Biological evidence has now been found for the existence of two related mouse HSC populations. First, a dormant HSC (d-HSC) population which harbors the highest self-renewal potential of all blood cells but is only induced into active self-renewal in response to hematopoietic stress. And second, an active HSC (a-HSC) subset that by and large produces the progenitors and mature cells required for maintenance of day-to-day hematopoiesis. Here we present computational analyses further supporting the d-HSC concept through extensive modeling of experimental DNA label-retaining cell (LRC) data. Our conclusion that the presence of a slowly dividing subpopulation of HSCs is the most likely explanation (amongst the various possible causes including stochastic cellular variation) of the observed long term Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) retention, is confirmed by the deterministic and stochastic models presented here. Moreover, modeling both HSC BrdU uptake and dilution in three stages and careful treatment of the BrdU detection sensitivity permitted improved estimates of HSC turnover rates. This analysis predicts that d-HSCs cycle about once every 149-193 days and a-HSCs about once every 28-36 days. We further predict that, using LRC assays, a 75%-92.5% purification of d-HSCs can be achieved after 59-130 days of chase. Interestingly, the d-HSC proportion is now estimated to be around 30-45% of total HSCs - more than twice that of our previous estimate

    Conventional therapies to treat cancer often exhibit low specificity, reducing the efficiency of the treatment and promoting strong side effects. To overcome these drawbacks, new ways to fight cancer cells have been developed so far focusing on nanosystems. Different action mechanisms to fight cancer cells have been explored using nanomaterials, being their remote activation one of the most promising. Photo-and sonodynamic therapies are relatively new approaches that emerged following this idea. These therapies are based on the ability of specific agents to generate highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) by external stimulation with light or ultrasounds (US), respectively. Crystalline (TiO2) and amorphous titania (a-TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) present a set of very interesting characteristics, such as their photo-reactivity, photo stability, and effective bactericidal properties. Their production is inexpensive and easily scalable; they are reusable and demonstrated already to be nontoxic. Therefore, these NPs have been increasingly studied as promising photo-or sonosensitizers to be applied in photodynamic/sonodynamic therapies in the future. However, they suffer from poor colloidal stability in aqueous and biological relevant media. Therefore, various organic and polymer-based coatings have been proposed. In this work, the role of a-TiO2 based NPs synthesized through a novel, room-temperature, base-catalyzed, sol-gel protocol in the generation of ROS and as an enhancer of acoustic inertial cavitation was evaluated under ultrasound irradiation. A novel biomimetic coating based on double lipidic bilayer, self-assembled on the a-TiO2-propylamine NPs, is proposed to better stabilize them in water media. The obtained results show that the biomimetic a-TiO2-propylamine NPs are promising candidates to be US responding agents, since an improvement of the cavitation effect occurs in presence of the developed NPs. Further studies will show their efficacy against cancer cells

    The AMS-02 Time of Flight System. Final Design

    Comparative study of the biological behaviour in hamster of two isolates of leishmania characterized respectively as L. major-like and L. donovani

    Hamster inoculated intraperitoneally with 1 x 10(7) parasites of L. donovani and L. major-like of the New World were studied in groups of 15, 30, 60 and 90 days of infection. The parasite load and density showed progressive increase with the evolution of the infection and was higher in the L. donovani groups than in the L. major-like groups. The L. major-like groups showed parasite density higher in the spleen than in the liver and was similar in both organs in L. donovani groups. The histopathology showed a diffuse marked hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the reticuloendothelial system with high parasitism in the L. donovani groups while there was focal involvement of these organs in L. major-like groups, forming nodules of macrophages that were scantly parasitised. The biological behaviour could be useful in the preliminary studies of Leishmania strain in regional laboratories and understanding the histopathology of lesions caused by different leishmania species.Experimentos utilizando-se hamsters inoculados intraperitonealmente com 1 x 10(7) parasitas de 2 cepas, L. donovani (MHOM/BR/72/LD 46) e L. major-like (MCAN/BR/73/LD 70) isoladas no Novo Mundo foram realizados e estudados em grupos de 15, 30, 60 e 90 dias de infecção. A carga e a densidade parasitária mostraram progressivo aumento com a evolução da infecção e foi maior nos grupos inoculados com L. donovani do que nos grupos inoculados com L. major-like. Os grupos inoculados com L. major-like mostraram densidade parasitária maior no baço que no fígado e foram semelhantes em ambos os órgãos nos grupos inoculados com L. donovani. A histopatologia mostrou intensa e difusa hyperplasia e hipertrofia do sistema reticuloendotelial com alto parasitismo nos grupos inoculados com L. donovani, enquanto foi encontrado envolvimento focai nestes órgãos nos grupos inoculados com L. major-like, formando nódulos de macrófagos discretamente parasitados. O comportamento biológico seria útil em estudos preliminares de identificação de cepas de Leishmania em laboratórios regionais e na compreensão da histopatologia das lesões causadas por diferentes espécimes de leishmanias
