A constrained Potts antiferromagnet model with an interface representation
We define a four-state Potts model ensemble on the square lattice, with the
constraints that neighboring spins must have different values, and that no
plaquette may contain all four states. The spin configurations may be mapped
into those of a 2-dimensional interface in a 2+5 dimensional space. If this
interface is in a Gaussian rough phase (as is the case for most other models
with such a mapping), then the spin correlations are critical and their
exponents can be related to the stiffness governing the interface fluctuations.
Results of our Monte Carlo simulations show height fluctuations with an
anomalous dependence on wavevector, intermediate between the behaviors expected
in a rough phase and in a smooth phase; we argue that the smooth phase (which

Irrigation canal discharge measurement by using commercial digital video camera

The images of free surface and stage gauge are obtained from commercial digital video camera.
Time series of surface velocity and stage had been collected simultaneously. Knowledge of flow
filed in a irrigation canal was essential for computing discharge. Large scale particle image
velocimetry( LSPIV)was used to determine surface velocities in the irrigation canal. LSPIV
proceeds by using the bubbles float on the water surface as the tracer particles, and making crosscorrelation
analys is between two continuous images. Thus, it can calculate the speed and direction
of tracer particles. The whole surface velocity distribution in a irrigation canal can be obtained. The
water stage of canal obtains from the digital video camera images by making use of image segment
to separate stage gauge and background. Discharge computed by using the surface velocities and
water stage via open channel velocity distribution theory. Comparing the image techniques
measured discharge with Parshall flume data shows the differences are to be less then 5%. The
results suggest that the developed image measurement techniques can be used in the applications to
estimate irrigation canal discharge effectively
Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in frustrated magnets
The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg
antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The
field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger
for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds
the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An
enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a
macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation
field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo

Dynamics of Metal Centers Monitored by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering
Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since
10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out
especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a M\"ossbauer active
metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin
crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is
given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional
calculations
Ultrathin compound semiconductor on insulator layers for high performance nanoscale transistors
Over the past several years, the inherent scaling limitations of electron
devices have fueled the exploration of high carrier mobility semiconductors as
a Si replacement to further enhance the device performance. In particular,
compound semiconductors heterogeneously integrated on Si substrates have been
actively studied, combining the high mobility of III-V semiconductors and the
well-established, low cost processing of Si technology. This integration,
however, presents significant challenges. Conventionally, heteroepitaxial
growth of complex multilayers on Si has been explored. Besides complexity, high
defect densities and junction leakage currents present limitations in the
approach. Motivated by this challenge, here we utilize an epitaxial transfer
method for the integration of ultrathin layers of single-crystalline InAs on
Si/SiO2 substrates. As a parallel to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology14,we
use the abbreviation "XOI" to represent our compound semiconductor-on-insulator
platform. Through experiments and simulation, the electrical properties of InAs
XOI transistors are explored, elucidating the critical role of quantum
confinement in the transport properties of ultrathin XOI layers. Importantly, a
high quality InAs/dielectric interface is obtained by the use of a novel
thermally grown interfacial InAsOx layer (~1 nm thick). The fabricated FETs
exhibit an impressive peak transconductance of ~1.6 mS/{\mu}m at VDS=0.5V with
ON/OFF current ratio of greater than 10,000 and a subthreshold swing of 107-150
mV/decade for a channel length of ~0.5 {\mu}m
A study protocol to investigate the relationship between dietary fibre intake and fermentation, colon cell turnover, global protein acetylation and early carcinogenesis: the FACT study
Background: A number of studies, notably EPIC, have shown a descrease in colorectal cancer risk associated with increased fibre consumption. Whilst the underlying mechanisms are likely to be multifactorial, production of the short-chain fatty-acid butyrate fro butyratye is frequently cited as a major potential contributor to the effect. Butyrate inhibits histone deacetylases, which work on a wide range of proteins over and above histones. We therefore hypothesized that alterations in the acetylated proteome may be associated with a cancer risk phenotype in the colorectal mucosa, and that such alterations are candidate biomarkers for effectiveness of fibre interventions in cancer prevention.
Methods an design: There are two principal arms to this study: (i) a cross-sectional study (FACT OBS) of 90 subjects recruited from gastroenterology clinics and; (ii) an intervention trial in 40 subjects with an 8 week high fibre intervention. In both studies the principal goal is to investigate a link between fibre intake, SCFA production and global protein acetylation. The primary measure is level of faecal butyrate, which it is hoped will be elevated by moving subjects to a high fibre diet. Fibre intakes will be estimated in the cross-sectional group using the EPIC Food Frequency Questionnaire. Subsidiary measures of the effect of butyrate on colon mucosal function and precancerous phenotype will include measures of apoptosis, apoptotic regulators cell cycle and cell division.
Discussion: This study will provide a new level of mechanistic data on alterations in the functional proteome in response to the colon microenvironment which may underwrite the observed cancer preventive effect of fibre. The study may yield novel candidate biomarkers of fibre fermentation and colon mucosal function
Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey
This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh
network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user
privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various
possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for
WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the
security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application
layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols,
user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation
protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the
chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms
and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible
attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with
regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed,
use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved
etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management
approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly
becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open
problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed

Postictal Psychosis in Epilepsy: A Clinicogenetic Study
OBJECTIVE: Psychoses affecting people with epilepsy increase disease burden and diminish quality of life. We characterised post-ictal psychosis, which comprises about one-quarter of epilepsy-related psychoses, and has unknown causation. METHODS: We conducted a case-control cohort study including patients diagnosed with post-ictal psychosis, confirmed by psychiatric assessment, with available data regarding epilepsy, treatment, psychiatric history, psychosis profile and outcomes. After screening 3,288 epilepsy patients, we identified 83 with psychosis: 49 had post-ictal psychosis. Controls were 98 adults, matched by age and epilepsy type, with no history of psychosis. Logistic regression was used to investigate clinical factors associated with post-ictal psychosis; univariate associations with a P-value<0.20 were used to build a multivariate model. Polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia were calculated. RESULTS: Cases were more likely to have seizure clustering (OR 7.59, P<0.001), seizures with a recollected aura (OR 2.49, P=0.013) and a family history of psychiatric disease (OR 5.17, P=0.022). Cases showed predominance of right temporal epileptiform discharges (OR 4.87, P=0.007). There was no difference in epilepsy duration, neuroimaging findings or anti-seizure treatment between cases and controls. Polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia in an extended cohort of post-ictal psychosis cases (58) were significantly higher than in 1,366 epilepsy controls (R2 =3%, P=6x10-3 ), but not significantly different from 945 independent patients with schizophrenia (R2 =0.1%, P=0.775). INTERPRETATION: Post-ictal psychosis occurs under particular circumstances in people with epilepsy with a heightened genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, illustrating how disease biology (seizures) and trait susceptibility (schizophrenia) may interact to produce particular outcomes (post-ictal psychosis) in a common disease
