Exercise rehabilitation for recovery from critical illness (Protocol)
Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, UK.
As part of an ongoing research education programme. This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:
The objective of this systematic review is to assess the effectiveness of exercise rehabilitation programmes, initiated after ICU discharge, on improving functional exercise capacity and quality of life in adult ICU survivors who have been mechanically ventilated for more than 24 hours.
We will compare an exercise intervention to any other intervention or a control or 'usual care' programme. Exercise includes any structured or taught programmes. Respiratory or inspiratory muscle training is excluded due to it being initiated within the ICU environment, for example with weaning from a ventilator, and not as post-discharge rehabilitation as required for this review.sch_phyAngus 1997

Real Estate Agent Remarks: Help or Hype?
This article groups the remarks of a multiple listing service listing into common themes and then uses a hedonic pricing model to determine whether such comments are priced in a meaningful way. The comments provide information on the motivation of the seller, location of the property and physical improvements or defects. Most of the comments analyzed are statistically significant. Negative comments are associated with lower sales prices suggesting the helpful nature of comments. Some of the positive comments, however, including "new paint" and "good location" are also associated with lower sales prices suggesting that some comments may be better classified as hype.
Resonant Processes in a Frozen Gas
We present a theory of resonant processes in a frozen gas of atoms
interacting via dipole-dipole potentials that vary as , where is
the interatomic separation. We supply an exact result for a single atom in a
given state interacting resonantly with a random gas of atoms in a different
state. The time development of the transition process is calculated both on-
and off-resonance, and the linewidth with respect to detuning is obtained as a
function of time . We introduce a random spin Hamiltonian to model a dense
system of resonators and show how it reduces to the previous model in the limit
of a sparse system. We derive approximate equations for the average effective
spin, and we use them to model the behavior seen in the experiments of Anderson
et al. and Lowell et al. The approach to equilibrium is found to be
proportional to ), where the constant is explicitly related to the system's parameters.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure
Wind measurement system
A system for remotely measuring vertical and horizontal winds present in discrete volumes of air at selected locations above the ground is described. A laser beam is optically focused in range by a telescope, and the output beam is conically scanned at an angle about a vertical axis. The backscatter, or reflected light, from the ambient particulates in a volume of air, the focal volume, is detected for shifts in wavelength, and from these, horizontal and vertical wind components are computed

Modelling interfacial coupling in thin film magnetic exchange springs at finite temperature
This is the final version of the article. Available from the American Institute of Physics via the DOI in this record. We report a numerical study that demonstrates the interface layer between a soft and hard magnetic phase, the exchange transition layer, is the dominant factor that influences the magnetization reversal process at room temperature and long measurement times. It is found that the exchange transition layer thickness affects the magnetization reversal and the coupling of a bi-layer system by lowering the switching field and changing the angle dependent magnetization reversal. We show that the change in angle dependence of reversal is due to an increased incoherency in the lateral spin behavior. Changing the value of exchange coupling in the exchange transition layer affects only the angle dependent behavior and does not lower the switching field. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.We would like to thank the EPSRC for financial support under Grant Nos. Velocity, energy and helicity of vortex knots and unknots
In this paper we determine the velocity, the energy and estimate writhe and
twist helicity contributions of vortex filaments in the shape of torus knots
and unknots (toroidal and poloidal coils) in a perfect fluid. Calculations are
performed by numerical integration of the Biot-Savart law. Vortex complexity is
parametrized by the winding number , given by the ratio of the number of
meridian wraps to that of the longitudinal wraps. We find that for vortex
knots and toroidal coils move faster and carry more energy than a reference
vortex ring of same size and circulation, whereas for knots and poloidal
coils have approximately same speed and energy of the reference vortex ring.
Helicity is dominated by the writhe contribution. Finally, we confirm the
stabilizing effect of the Biot-Savart law for all knots and unknots tested,
that are found to be structurally stable over a distance of several diameters.
Our results also apply to quantized vortices in superfluid He.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
