    Since both metric and non-metric data are transmitted through a missile\u27s antenna system, assurance of an adequate signal level at the ground sites is essential in planning the range instrumentation support of a launch. For this reason a theoretical signal strength reduction is performed at the Air Force Eastern Test Range before every missile launch. The missile contractor defines the radiation characteristics of each missile-antenna combination in the form of an antenna pattern. The antenna pattern format and the vehicle-antenna coordinate system have been defined by the Inter Range Instrumentation Group. The aspect angles for each tracking site are computed for the theoretical trajectory. These aspect angles are then coupled with the antenna pattern, so that with knowledge of the other parameters, (1) transmitted power; (2) frequency; (3) ground antenna gain, and (4) the polarizations of both antennas, the power received by a ground station can be readily calculated

    Analysis of control concepts for gas and shaft-coupled V/STOL aircraft lift fan systems

    For lift-fan powered V/STOL aircraft, two unconventional propulsion system types were proposed. The first type uses fans connected by hot gas ducting, and the second type uses fans connected by cross shafting. An analytical study identified the basic steady-state and dynamic characteristics for each type of system. For the gas-coupled system, the control concepts analyzed were variable-area fan turbines and throttling valves in the ducting. For the shaft-coupled system, the control concepts analyzed were variable-pitch fans and variable fan inlet guide vanes. All of these concepts are capable of meeting V/STOL aircraft control moment and transient response requirements when appropriate propulsion controls are used

    On-board fault management for autonomous spacecraft

    The dynamic nature of the Cargo Transfer Vehicle's (CTV) mission and the high level of autonomy required mandate a complete fault management system capable of operating under uncertain conditions. Such a fault management system must take into account the current mission phase and the environment (including the target vehicle), as well as the CTV's state of health. This level of capability is beyond the scope of current on-board fault management systems. This presentation will discuss work in progress at TRW to apply artificial intelligence to the problem of on-board fault management. The goal of this work is to develop fault management systems. This presentation will discuss work in progress at TRW to apply artificial intelligence to the problem of on-board fault management. The goal of this work is to develop fault management systems that can meet the needs of spacecraft that have long-range autonomy requirements. We have implemented a model-based approach to fault detection and isolation that does not require explicit characterization of failures prior to launch. It is thus able to detect failures that were not considered in the failure and effects analysis. We have applied this technique to several different subsystems and tested our approach against both simulations and an electrical power system hardware testbed. We present findings from simulation and hardware tests which demonstrate the ability of our model-based system to detect and isolate failures, and describe our work in porting the Ada version of this system to a flight-qualified processor. We also discuss current research aimed at expanding our system to monitor the entire spacecraft

    The rationale of powertype-based metamodelling to underpin software development methodologies

    Metamodelling provides a way of modelling the rules underpinning not only modelling languages such as UML but also processes. In the context of object-oriented development, we evaluate the conceptual framework used to reason about metamodelling from the different perspectives of methodologist, method engineer and software developer. We propose the use of clabjets and powertype patterns as a solution to avoid the present inconsistencies in the use of a strict metamodelling multi-level hierarchy and demonstrate their efficacy in providing a solid and improved framework for OO-based process (and product) metamodelling.
