Deep reef fish surveys by submersible on Alderdice, McGrail, and Sonnier Banks in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico
Submersible surveys at numerous reefs and banks in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (NWGOM) were conducted as part of the Sustainable Seas Expedition (SSE) during July/August
2002 to identify reef fish communities, characterize benthic habitats, and identify deep coral reef ecosystems. To identify the spatial extent of hard bottom reef
communities, the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
mapped approximately 2000 km2 of the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico (NWGOM) continental shelf during June 2002 with
high-resolution multibeam bathymetry. Previous investigations conducted on the features of interest (with the exceptions of East and West Flower Garden and Sonnier
Banks, accessible by SCUBA) had not been conducted since the 1970s and 1980s, and did not have the use of high-resolution maps to target survey sites. The base maps were instrumental in navigating submersibles to specific features at each study site during the Sustainable Seas
Expedition (SSE)—a submersible effort culminating from a partnership between the National Atmospheric and Oceanic
Administration (NOAA) and the National Geographic Society (NGS). We report the initial findings of our submersible surveys, including habitat and reef fish diversity at
McGrail, Alderdice, and Sonnier Banks. A total of 120 species and 40,724 individuals were identified from video surveys at the three banks. Planktivorous fishes constituted over 87% by number for the three banks, ranging from 81.4% at Sonnier Banks to 94.3% at Alderdice Bank,
indicating a direct link to pelagic prey communities, particularly in the deep reef zones. High numbers of groupers, snappers, jacks, and other fishery species
were observed on all three features. These sites were nominated as Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (HAPC) by
the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Council in March 2004. Data obtained during this project will contribute to benthic habitat characterization and assessment of the associated
fish communities through future SCUBA, ROV, and submersible missions, and allow comparisons to other deep reef
ecosystems found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic Ocean
Quantitative characterization of the x-ray imaging capability of rotating modulation collimators with laser light
We developed a method for making quantitative characterizations of bi-grid rotating modulation collimators (RMC ’s) that are used in a Fourier transform x-ray imager. With appropriate choices of the collimator spacings, this technique can be implemented with a beam-expanded He -Ne laser to simulate the plane wave produced by a point source at infinity even though the RMC ’s are diffraction limited at the He -Ne wavelength of 632.8 nm. The expanded beam passes through the grid pairs at a small angle with respect to their axis of rotation, and the modulated transmission through the grids as the RMC ’s rotate is detected with a photomultiplier tube. In addition to providing a quantitative characterization of the RMC ’s, the method also produces a measured point response function and provides an end-to-end check of the imaging system. We applied our method to the RMC ’s on the high-energy imaging device (HEIDI) balloon payload in its preflight configuration. We computed the harmonic ratios of the modulation time profile from the laser measurements and compared them with theoretical calculations, including the diffraction effects on irregular grids. Our results indicate the 25-in. (64-cm) x-ray imaging optics on HEIDI are capable of achieving images near the theoretical limit and are not seriously compromised by imperfections in the grids
Impact of anion polarizability on ion pairing in microhydrated salt clusters
Despite longstanding interest in the mechanism of salt dissolution in aqueous media, a molecular level understanding remains incomplete. Here, cryogenic ion trap vibrational action spectroscopy is combined with electronic structure calculations to track salt hydration in a gas phase model system one water molecule at a time. The infrared photodissociation spectra of microhydrated lithium dihalide anions [LiXX′(H2O)n]- (XX′ = I2, ClI and Cl2; n = 1–3) in the OH stretching region (3800–2800 cm-1) provide a detailed picture of how anion polarizability influences the competition among ion–ion, ion–water and water–water interactions. While exclusively contact ion pairs are observed for n = 1, the formation of solvent-shared ion pairs, identified by markedly red-shifted OH stretching bands (-1), originating from the bridging water molecules, is favored already for n = 2. For n = 3, Li+ reaches its maximum coordination number of four only in [LiI2(H2O)3]-, in accordance with the hard and soft Lewis acid and base principle. Water–water hydrogen bond formation leads to a different solvent-shared ion pair motif in [LiI2(H2O)3]- and network formation even restabilizes the contact ion pair motif in [LiCl2(H2O)3]-. Structural assignments are exclusively possible after the consideration of anharmonic effects. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the significance of large amplitude motion (of the water molecules) increases with increasing anion polarizability and that needs to be considered already at cryogenic temperatures
Behavioral and neurophysiological correlates of emotional face processing in borderline personality disorder: are there differences between men and women?
Emotional dysregulation is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD);it is, for example, known to influence one's ability to read other people's facial expressions. We investigated behavioral and neurophysiological foundations of emotional face processing in individuals with BPD and in healthy controls, taking participants' sex into account. 62 individuals with BPD (25 men, 37 women) and 49 healthy controls (20 men, 29 women) completed an emotion classification task with faces depicting blends of angry and happy expressions while the electroencephalogram was recorded. The cortical activity (late positive potential, P3/LPP) was evaluated using source modeling. Compared to healthy controls, individuals with BPD responded slower to happy but not to angry faces;further, they showed more anger ratings in happy but not in angry faces, especially in those with high ambiguity. Men had lower anger ratings than women and responded slower to angry but not happy faces. The P3/LPP was larger in healthy controls than in individuals with BPD, and larger in women than in men;moreover, women but not men produced enlarged P3/LPP responses to angry vs. happy faces. Sex did not interact with behavioral or P3/LPP-related differences between healthy controls and individuals with BPD. Together, BPD-related alterations in behavioral and P3/LPP correlates of emotional face processing exist in both men and women, supposedly without sex-related interactions. Results point to a general 'negativity bias' in women. Source modeling is well suited to investigate effects of participant and stimulus characteristics on the P3/LPP generators
Improved emotion regulation after neurofeedback: A single-arm trial in patients with borderline personality disorder
Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neurofeedback training of amygdala hemodynamic activity directly targets a neurobiological mechanism, which contributes to emotion regulation problems in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it remains unknown which outcome measures can assess changes in emotion regulation and affective instability, associated with amygdala downregulation in a clinical trial. The current study directly addresses this question. Twenty-four female patients with a DSM-IV BPD diagnosis underwent four runs of amygdala neurofeedback. Before and after the training, as well as at a six-weeks follow-up assessment, participants completed measures of emotion dysregulation and affective instability at diverse levels of analysis (verbal report, clinical interview, ecological momentary assessment, emotion-modulated startle, heart rate variability, and fMRI). Participants were able to downregulate their amygdala blood oxygen-dependent (BOLD) response with neurofeedback. There was a decrease of BPD symptoms as assessed with the Zanarini rating scale for BPD (ZAN-BPD) and a decrease in emotion-modulated startle to negative pictures after training. Further explorative analyses suggest that patients indicated less affective instability, as seen by lower hour-to-hour variability in negative affect and inner tension in daily life. If replicated by an independent study, our results imply changes in emotion regulation and affective instability for several systems levels, including behavior and verbal report. Conclusions are limited due to the lack of a control group. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be needed to confirm effectiveness of the training
Problems and Progress in Flare Fast Particle Diagnostics
Recent progress in the diagnosis of flare fast particles is critically
discussed with the main emphasis on high resolution Hard X-Ray (HXR) data from
RHESSI and coordinated data from other instruments. Spectacular new photon data
findings are highlighted as are advances in theoretical aspects of their use as
fast particle diagnostics, and some important comparisons made with
interplanetary particle data. More specifically the following topics are
addressed
(a) RHESSI data on HXR (electron) versus gamma-ray line (ion) source
locations.
(b) RHESSI hard X-ray source spatial structure in relation to theoretical
models and loop density structure.
(c) Energy budget of flare electrons and the Neupert effect.
(d) Spectral deconvolution methods including blind target testing and results
for RHESSI HXR spectra, including the reality and implications of dips inferred
in electron spectra

Tweed in Martensites: A Potential New Spin Glass
We've been studying the ``tweed'' precursors above the martensitic transition
in shape--memory alloys. These characteristic cross--hatched modulations occur
for hundreds of degrees above the first--order shape--changing transition. Our
two--dimensional model for this transition, in the limit of infinite elastic
anisotropy, can be mapped onto a spin--glass Hamiltonian in a random field. We
suggest that the tweed precursors are a direct analogy of the spin--glass
phase. The tweed is intermediate between the high--temperature cubic phase and
the low--temperature martensitic phase in the same way as the spin--glass phase

Surviving the surf: The tribomechanical properties of the periostracum of Mytilus sp
We investigated the friction and wear behavior as well as the mechanical properties of the periostracum of Mytilus sp. Tribological properties were determined with a reciprocal sliding microtribometer, while mechanical characterization was performed using a nanoindenter. Measurements were performed in dry and wet conditions. On the dry periostracum we found a low friction coefficient of 0.078 ± 0.007 on the young parts and a higher one of 0.63 ± 0.02 on the old parts of the shell. Under wet, saline, conditions we only observed one average coefficient of friction of 0.37 ± 0.01. Microscopic ex situ analysis indicated that dry periostracum wore rather rapidly by plowing and fatigue, while it exhibited a high wear resistance when immersed in salt water. The Young’s modulus and hardness of the periostracum were also investigated in both dry and wet conditions. Under dry conditions the Young’s modulus of the periostracum was 8 ± 3 GPa, while under wet conditions it was 0.21 ± 0.05 GPa. The hardness of dry periostracum samples was 353 ± 127 MPa, whereas the hardness of wet samples was 5 ± 2 MPa. It was found that, in the wet state, viscous behavior plays a significant role in the mechanical response of the periostracum. Our results strongly indicate that the periostracum can provide an important contribution to the overall wear resistance of Mytilus sp. shell
