    Protein S-nitrosylation in plants under abiotic stress: an overview

    Abiotic stress is one of the main problems affecting agricultural losses, and understanding the mechanisms behind plant tolerance and stress response will help us to develop new means of strengthening fruitful agronomy. The mechanisms of plant stress response are complex. Data obtained by experimental procedures are sometimes contradictory, depending on the species, strength, and timing applied. In recent years nitric oxide has been identified as a key signaling molecule involved in most plant responses to abiotic stress, either indirectly through gene activation or interaction with reactive oxygen species and hormones; or else directly, as a result of modifying enzyme activities mainly by nitration and S-nitrosylation. While the functional relevance of the S-nitrosylation of certain proteins has been assessed in response to biotic stress, it has yet to be characterized under abiotic stress. Here, we review initial works about S-nitrosylation in response to abiotic stress to conclude with a brief overview, and discuss further perspectives to obtain a clear outlook of the relevance of S-nitrosylation in plant response to abiotic stress.Peer reviewedPeer Reviewe

    Control of trace metal distribution and variability in an interdunal wetland

    Trace elements are serious pollutants in the natural environment and are of increasing concern due to the adverse effects at global scale. To refine the current understanding of trace metal distribution and variability in natural environments, concentrations of dissolved trace metals (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Th,Tl, U, V, Mn, Zn), major ions, inorganic nutrients (NO3, PO4), TOC and stable isotopes of water were determined in water samples from rainwater, seven piezometers and a pond in the coastal Doñana wetland during four sampling campaigns between 2017 and 2019. Results show clear evaporation signatures of stable isotopes in the pond but not in the groundwater. Hydrochemical analyses yield significant, systematic changes in groundwater trace metal and nutrient composition along the flowpath from the dune belt to the pond, controlled by organic matter in the sediments. Whereas major ions reached maximum concentrations in the pond due to evapoconcentration, most trace metals showed highest concentrations at sites with lower redox levels, except for B, As and U, which showed very high concentrations in the pond. Cu, Zn, Ni, Sb and Tl yielded higher median concentrations in rainwater than in most of the groundwater points and in case of Cu and Zn higher even than in surface water which points to an atmospheric input source of these elements. Temporal variability of trace metals was related to lower hydraulic heads after an elongated dry period which led to lower redox levels and higher concentrations of most of the trace elements whereas major ions showed more constant concentration levels.     Protección del gasto público social a través de la política fiscal: el caso de Chile

    Incluye BibliografíaDesde 2001, Chile ha alineado su gasto público con la evolución de sus ingresos estructurales, permitiendo que éste aumente de manera sostenida en el tiempo, incluso durante los períodos de menor crecimiento económico. Esto ha sido posible gracias una la política fiscal basada en el concepto de balance estructural, que determina cuánto es posible gastar en función de los ingresos fiscales que se obtendrían en una situación aislada del ciclo económico. En términos simples, esto implica ahorrar en tiempos de bonanza, cuando se reciben ingresos que se sabe son sólo transitorios, justamente para poder gastarlos cuando se enfrentan coyunturas que hacen caer los ingresos o que hacen aumentar las necesidades de gasto. En este marco, el presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar la política de protección del gasto público social a través de la política fiscal implementada en Chile en el período 2001-2009, de manera que sirva de potencial ilustración para otros casos. Para ello, en el capítulo I del documento se define lo que se entiende por Gasto Público Social en Chile, se muestra su evolución, su composición y se lo compara en el contexto de América Latina y el Caribe. En el capítulo II se describen brevemente los lineamientos de la política fiscal basada en el balance estructural, se resalta la importancia de proteger el Gasto Público Social y se muestran los logros alcanzados en Chile en esta materia. En el capítulo III se presentan dos ejemplos concretos en cuanto a Gasto Público Social sustentable y en el contexto de la política fiscal de balance estructural: la Reforma Previsional del año 2008, y el aumento de las Subvenciones educacionales junto con la implementación de la Subvención educacional preferencial del mismo año. Finalmente, en el capítulo IV se concluye y se plantean los desafíos para seguir protegiendo el Gasto Público Social a futuro y aumentar su impacto en el bienestar de la población

    Peculiar properties of chlorophyll thermoluminescence emission of autotrophically or mixotrophically grown Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

    The microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella sp. CCAP 211/84 were grown autotrophically and mixotrophically and their thermoluminescence emissions were recorded above 0 °C after excitation by 1, 2 or 3 xenon flashes or by continuous far-red light. An oscillation of the B band intensity according to the number of flashes was always observed, with a maximum after 2 flashes, accompanied by a downshift of the B band temperature maximum in mixotrophic compared to autotrophic grown cells, indicative of a dark stable pH gradient. Moreover, new flash-induced bands emerged in mixotrophic Chlamydomonas grown cells, at temperatures higher than that of the B band. In contrast to the afterglow band observed in higher plants, in Chlamydomonas these bands were not inducible by far-red light, were fully suppressed by 2 μM antimycin A, and peaked at different temperatures depending on the flash number and growth stage, with higher temperature maxima in cells at a stationary compared to an exponential growth stage.     Simultaneous Surface Plasmon Resonance and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

    We present here an experimental set-up to perform simultaneously measurements of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a synchrotron beamline. The system allows measuring in situ and in real time the effect of X-ray irradiation on the SPR curves to explore the interaction of X-rays with matter. It is also possible to record XAS spectra while exciting SPR in order to detect the changes in the electronic configuration of thin films induced by the excitation of surface plasmons. Combined experiments recording simultaneously SPR and XAS curves while scanning different parameters can be carried out. The relative variations in the SPR and XAS spectra that can be detected with this set-up ranges from 10-3 to 10-5, depending on the particular experiment

    Parallel Online Time Warping for Real-Time Audio-to-Score Alignment in Multi-core Systems

    [EN] The Audio-to-Score framework consists of two separate stages: pre- processing and alignment. The alignment is commonly solved through offline Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), which is a method to find the path over the distortion matrix with the minimum cost to determine the relation between the performance and the musical score times. In this work we propose a par- allel online DTW solution based on a client-server architecture. The current version of the application has been implemented for multi-core architectures (x86, x64 and ARM), thus covering either powerful systems or mobile devices. An extensive experimentation has been conducted in order to validate the software.     Plant by-product antioxidants: control of protein-lipid oxidation in meat and meat products

The application of natural antioxidants in muscle food appears a sustainable option for reducing the consumption of synthetic antioxidants with confirmed carcinogenic and toxicological effects. Hence, the food industry today prefers low-cost natural additives instead of synthetic ones. Agro-food industry generates a large quantity of plant by-products annually during the cultivation and processing of agricultural products. There is a wide variety of natural antioxidants in plant by-products. Several parts of plant (seeds, peels, leaves, husks, stems, and roots) as unexploited novel sources of natural antioxidant can be applied either through technological strategies to control oxidative process in meat and meat products. This paper provides an overview of the current trends in the use of natural antioxidants from plant by-products for potential applications against protein–lipid oxidation in muscle food.     Early Risk Factors for Obesity in the First 1000 Days-Relationship with Body Fat and BMI at 2 Years

    Background: Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat. Several early developmental factors have been identified which are associated with an increased risk of childhood obesity and increased adiposity in childhood. The primary objective of the present study is to analyse the effect of various early risk factors on Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage at 2 years of age. (2) Methods: A prospective cohort study design was used, with the sample consisting of 109 mother-child pairs from whom data were collected between early pregnancy and 2 years old. Adiposity was determined based on skinfold measurements using the Brooks and Siri formulae. Mean comparison tests (Student's t-test and ANOVAs) and multiple linear regression models were used to analyse the relationship between early programming factors and dependent variables. (3) Results: Maternal excess weight during early pregnancy (beta = 0.203, p = 0.026), gestational smoking (beta = 0.192, p = 0.036), and accelerated weight gain in the first 2 years (beta = - 0.269, p = 0.004) were significantly associated with high body fat percentage. Pre-pregnancy BMI and accelerated weight gain in the first 2 years were associated with high BMI z-score (beta = 0.174, p = 0.047 and beta = 0.417, p = 0.000 respectively). The cumulative effect of these variables resulted in high values compared to the baseline zero-factor group, with significant differences in BMI z-score (F = 8.640, p = 0.000) and body fat percentage (F = 5.402, p = 0.002) when three factors were present. (4) Conclusions: The presence of several early risk factors related to obesity in infancy was significantly associated with higher BMI z-score and body fat percentage at 2 years of age. The presence of more than one of these variables was also associated with higher adiposity at 2 years of age.     Conference posterThe scarce elasmobranch information existing nowadays has received rapidly growing worlwide attention in targeted fisheries, and also as a by-catch in other fisheries. The landings of rays are significant as by-catch in the North of Spain fisheries, and not always individuals are landed whole. The ray wings are cut on board of commercial vessels, and this landing is recorded by fish-markets. One of the objectives of DELASS project (Development of Elasmobranch Assessments) is to obtain reliable data into a particular area. In this poster the degree of existent correlation between the round fresh weight and landing lenght distribution concerning these species is presented
