    A Linguistic Recommender System For University Digital Libraries To Help Users In Their Research Resources Accesses

    The Web is one of the most important information media and it is influencing in the development of other media, as for example, newspapers, journals, books, libraries, etc. Moreover, in recent days people want to communicate and collaborate. So, libraries must develop services for connecting people together in information environments. Then, the library staff needs automatic techniques to facilitate that a great number of users can access to a great number of resources. Recommender systems are tools whose objective is to evaluate and filter the great amount of information available on the Web. We present a model of a fuzzy linguistic recommender system to help University Digital Library users in their research resources accesses. This system recommends researchers specialized and complementary resources in order to discover collaboration possibilities to form multi-disciplinaryy groups. In this way, this system increases social collaboration possibilities in a university framework and contributes to improve the services provided by a University Digital Library

    Constraining the Distribution of L- & T-Dwarfs in the Galaxy

    We estimate the thin disk scale height of the Galactic population of L- & T-dwarfs based on star counts from 15 deep parallel fields from the Hubble Space Telescope. From these observations, we have identified 28 candidate L- & T- dwarfs based on their (i'-z') color and morphology. By comparing these star counts to a simple Galactic model, we estimate the scale height to be 350+-50 pc that is consistent with the increase in vertical scale with decreasing stellar mass and is independent of reddening, color-magnitude limits, and other Galactic parameters. With this refined measure, we predict that less than 10^9 M_{sol} of the Milky Way can be in the form L- & T- dwarfs, and confirm that high-latitude, z~6 galaxy surveys which use the i'-band dropout technique are 97-100% free of L- & T- dwarf interlopers.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ

    Stochastic and resolvable gravitational waves from ultralight bosons

    Ultralight scalar fields around spinning black holes can trigger superradiant instabilities, forming a long-lived bosonic condensate outside the horizon. We use numerical solutions of the perturbed field equations and astrophysical models of massive and stellar-mass black hole populations to compute, for the first time, the stochastic gravitational-wave background from these sources. In optimistic scenarios the background is observable by Advanced LIGO and LISA for field masses ms in the range 3c[2 710-13,10-12] and 3c5 7[10-19,10-16] eV, respectively, and it can affect the detectability of resolvable sources. Our estimates suggest that an analysis of the stochastic background limits from LIGO O1 might already be used to marginally exclude axions with mass 3c10-12.5 eV. Semicoherent searches with Advanced LIGO (LISA) should detect 3c15(5) to 200(40) resolvable sources for scalar field masses 3 710-13 (10-17) eV. LISA measurements of massive BH spins could either rule out bosons in the range 3c[10-18,2 710-13] eV, or measure ms with 10% accuracy in the range 3c[10-17,10-13] eV

    In this paper we present the latest results on the design, fabrication and test of stand-alone photonic devices devoted to ultra-high bandwidth wireless access networks operating near the Terahertz (THz) band. We review the sub-THz photonics-based technology devices developed as part of the TERAPOD project, comprising the monolithically integrated Silicon Nitride photonic integrated circuit for phase distribution, the 1×4 array of integrated Uni-Travelling Carrier Photo-Diodes (UTC-PDs) and the radiative design of the high-frequency four element linear patch antenna array based on Benzocyclobutene (BCB) layers. We also report the suitability to assemble all those components in a robust small-form factor hybrid package

    The Milky Way's external disc constrained by 2MASS star counts

    Context. Thanks to recent large scale surveys in the near infrared such as 2MASS, the galactic plane that most suffers from extinction is revealed and its overall structure can be studied. Aims. This work aims at constraining the structure of the Milky Way external disc as seen in 2MASS data, and in particular the warp. Methods. We use the Two Micron All Sky Survey (hereafter 2MASS) along with the Stellar Population Synthesis Model of the Galaxy, developed in Besancon, to constrain the external disc parameters such as its scale length, its cutoff radius, and the slope of the warp. In order to properly interpret the observations, the simulated stars are reddened using a three dimensional extinction map. The shape of the stellar warp is then compared with previous results and with similar structures in gas and dust. Results. We find new constraints on the stellar disc, which is shown to be asymmetrical, similar to observations of HI. The positive longitude side is found to be easily modelled with a S shape warp but with a slope significantly smaller than the slope seen in the HI warp. At negative longitudes, the disc presents peculiarities which are not well reproduced by any simple model. Finally, comparing with the warp seen in the dust, it seems to follow a slope intermediate between the gas and the stars.Comment: 9 pages. Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
