    Coma cluster object populations down to M_R~-9.5

    This study follows a recent analysis of the galaxy luminosity functions and colour-magnitude red sequences in the Coma cluster (Adami et al. 2007). We analyze here the distribution of very faint galaxies and globular clusters in an east-west strip of ∌42×7\sim 42 \times 7 arcmin2^2 crossing the Coma cluster center (hereafter the CS strip) down to the unprecedented faint absolute magnitude of MR∌−9.5_R \sim -9.5. This work is based on deep images obtained at the CFHT with the CFH12K camera in the B, R, and I bands. The analysis shows that the observed properties strongly depend on the environment, and thus on the cluster history. When the CS is divided into four regions, the westernmost region appears poorly populated, while the regions around the brightest galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 (NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 being masked) are dominated by faint blue galaxies. They show a faint luminosity function slope of -2, very significantly different from the field estimates. Results are discussed in the framework of galaxy destruction (which can explain part of the very faint galaxy population) and of structures infalling on to Coma.Comment: To be published in A&

    AgapeZ1: a Large Amplification Microlensing Event or an Odd Variable Star Towards the Inner Bulge of M31

    AgapeZ1 is the brightest and the shortest duration microlensing candidate event found in the Agape data. It occured only 42" from the center of M31. Our photometry shows that the half intensity duration of the event6 is 4.8 days and at maximum brightness we measure a stellar magnitude of R=18.0 with B-R=0.80 mag color. A search on HST archives produced a single resolved star within the projected event position error box. Its magnitude is R=22.Comment: 4 pages with 5 figure

    Studying the evolution of large-scale structure with the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey

    The VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) currently offers a unique combination of depth, angular size and number of measured galaxies among surveys of the distant Universe: ~ 11,000 spectra over 0.5 deg2 to I_{AB}=24 (VVDS-Deep), 35,000 spectra over ~ 7 deg2 to I_{AB}=22.5 (VVDS-Wide). The current ``First Epoch'' data from VVDS-Deep already allow investigations of galaxy clustering and its dependence on galaxy properties to be extended to redshifts ~1.2-1.5, in addition to measuring accurately evolution in the properties of galaxies up to z~4. This paper concentrates on the main results obtained so far on galaxy clustering. Overall, L* galaxies at z~ 1.5 show a correlation length r_0=3.6\pm 0.7. As a consequence, the linear galaxy bias at fixed luminosity rises over the same range from the value b~1 measured locally, to b=1.5 +/- 0.1. The interplay of galaxy and structure evolution in producing this observation is discussed in some detail. Galaxy clustering is found to depend on galaxy luminosity also at z~ 1, but luminous galaxies at this redshift show a significantly steeper small-scale correlation function than their z=0 counterparts. Finally, red galaxies remain more clustered than blue galaxies out to similar redshifts, with a nearly constant relative bias among the two classes, b_{rel}~1.4, despite the rather dramatic evolution of the color-density relation over the same redshift range.Comment: 14 pages.     Photometric redshifts as a tool to study the Coma cluster galaxy populations

    We investigate the Coma cluster galaxy luminosity function (GLF) at faint magnitudes, in particular in the u* band by applying photometric redshift techniques applied to deep u*, B, V, R, I images covering a region of ~1deg2 (R 24). Global and local GLFs in the B, V, R and I bands obtained with photometric redshift selection are consistent with our previous results based on a statistical background subtraction. In the area covered only by the u* image, the GLF was also derived after applying a statistical background subtraction. The GLF in the u* band shows an increase of the faint end slope towards the outer regions of the cluster (from alpha~1 in the cluster center to alpha~2 in the cluster periphery). This could be explained assuming a short burst of star formation in these galaxies when entering the cluster. The analysis of the multicolor type spatial distribution reveals that late type galaxies are distributed in clumps in the cluster outskirts, where X-ray substructures are also detected and where the GLF in the u* band is steeper.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures in jpeg format, accepted in A&

    On the nature of faint Low Surface Brightness galaxies in the Coma cluster

    This project is the continuation of our study of faint Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (fLSBs) in one of the densest nearby galaxy regions known, the Coma cluster. Our goal is to improve our understanding of the nature of these objects by comparing the broad band spectral energy distribution with population synthesis models. The data were obtained with the MEGACAM and CFH12K cameras at the CFHT. We used the resulting photometry in 5 broad band filters (u*, B, V, R, and I), that included new u*-band data, to fit spectral models. With these spectral fits we inferred a cluster membership criterium, as well as the ages, dust extinctions, and photometric types of these fLSBs. We show that about half of the Coma cluster fLSBs have a spectral energy distribution well represented in our template library while the other half present a flux deficit at ultraviolet wavelengths. Among the well represented, ~80% are probably part of the Coma cluster based on their spectral energy distribution. They are relatively young (younger than 2.3 Gyrs for 90% of the sample) non-starburst objects. The later their type, the younger fLSBs are. A significant part of the fLSBs are quite dusty objects. fLSBs are low stellar mass objects (the later their type the less massive they are), with stellar masses comparable to globular clusters for the faintest ones. Their characteristics are correlated with infall directions, confirming the disruptive origin for part of them.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 10 pages, 10 figure

    Large scale diffuse light in the Coma cluster: a multi-scale approach

    We have obtained wide field images of the Coma cluster in the B, V, R and I bands with the CFH12K camera at CFHT. In order to search for large scale diffuse emission, we have applied to these images an iterative multi scale wavelet analysis and reconstruction technique which allowed to model all the sources (stars and galaxies) and subtract them from the original images. We found various concentrations of diffuse emission present in the central zone around the central galaxies NGC4874 and NGC4889. We characterize the positions, sizes and colors of these concentrations. Some sources do not seem to have strong star formation, while another one probably exhibits spiral-like color. One possible origin for the star forming diffuse emission sources is that in the region of the two main galaxies NGC4874 and NGC4889 spiral galaxies have recently been disrupted and star formation is still active in the dispersed material. We also use the characteristics of the sources of diffuse emission to trace the cluster dynamics. A scenario in which the group around NGC 4874 is moving north is consistent with our data.Comment: 11 pages, accepted in A&A, jpg figure

    AGAPE: a microlensing search in the direction of M31

    A status report of the microlensing search by the pixel method in the direction of M31, on the 2 meter telescope at Pic du Midi is given. Pixels are stable to a level better than 0.5%. Pixel variations as small as 0.02 magnitude can clearly be detected

    VIMOS is a spectrograph with imaging capabilities which will be mounted on the Nasmyth B focus of VLT UT. The main characteristics of VIMOS are the multiplexing spectral capabilities up to spectra per exposure and the presence of an Integral Field Unit IFU which allows spectrophotometry of 1 squared arcmin field. To reach the goal of 800 spectra per field VIMOS has been designed with a large field of view divided into quadrants each quadrant being by all means a full spectrograph on its own Spectra are obtained using masks with slits which are designed by the astronomer. The ESO VLT Project has devised a general Data Flow within which all VLT instruments have to operate During design and development of VIMOS instrument software we had to deal with the VLT general concept and adapt it to our needs
