    Refugees Who Have Experienced Extreme Cruelty: A Qualitative Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing after Being Granted Leave to Remain in the UK

    This study explores how vulnerable refugees’ experiences in the first year after being granted leave to remain in the UK impact on mental health and wellbeing. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with refugee survivors of extreme cruelty. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis with a narrative influence. Reported challenges included requirements to organize housing, finances and welfare benefits rapidly. Most respondents reported low mood, worry, exacerbated PTSD symptoms, physical ailments and isolation, but valued stable housing, meaningful activities, emotional support and service provider sensitivity in managing this transition. Policy and service recommendations are made, to assist integration and improve wellbeing

    Remote Photonic THz Generation Using an Optical Frequency Comb and Multicore Fiber

    [EN] This paper proposes and demonstrates a photonic THz generation technique based on an optical frequency comb and multicore fiber (MCF) transmission, with the advantage of remote generation with great reconfigurability and reduced digital signal processing (DSP). The feasibility of the proposed technique is evaluated experimentally comparing the performance when transmitting a data wavelength and a local oscillator for optical heterodyning over a single core or over different cores in a 1-km MCF link. The proposed remote photonic THz generation technique is demonstrated employing a 16QAM 12.5 GBd signal. A short wireless transmission at 183 GHz center frequency with 0.25 m antenna-separation is achieved after 1 km MCF, meeting the soft-decision decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) bit error rate (BER) recommendation of 2 center dot 10(-2). The analysis includes the received photocurrent range for which the BER meets the standard hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) recommendation of 3.8 center dot 10(-3) BER. The BER performance is analyzed considering different DSP configurations, with and without frequency offset estimation (FOE) and decision-driven least mean squares (DD LMS) equalization.     Quality of analgesic treatment in patients with advanced prostate cancer: do we do a better job now? The Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) experience

    Goals of work: The aim of this study was to evaluate pain intensity and the application of the WHO guidelines for cancer pain treatment in patients with prostate cancer treated at Swiss cancer centers. Materials and methods: We analyzed a series of five multicenter phase II clinical trials which examined the palliative effect of different chemotherapies in patients with advanced hormone-refractory prostate carcinoma. Of 170 patients, 1,018 visits were evaluable for our purpose, including ratings of pain intensity by patients and prescribed analgesics. Main results: No or mild pain was indicated by patients in 36 to 55% of the visits, more than mild pain in 30 to 46%. In 21% of the visits, the WHO pain treatment criteria (treatment according to one of the three steps; oral, rectal or transdermal application of the main dose; administration on a regular schedule) were fulfilled, and the Cleeland index was positive according to all recommendations. In 6% of the visits, neither the WHO criteria were fulfilled nor was the Cleeland index positive. This indicates insufficient pain treatment not following the WHO guidelines and that the prescribed analgesics were not sufficiently potent for the rated pain intensity. Conclusions: In this selective Swiss sample, the standard of analgesic treatment is high. However, there is still scope for improvement. This cannot solely be solved by improving the knowledge of the physicians. Programs to change the patients' attitude towards cancer pain, training to improve the physicians' communication skills, and institutional changes may be promising strategie

    Graphene memristors based on humidity-mediated reduction of graphene oxide

    Memristors have emerged as promising devices for neuromorphic applications, particularly as synaptic weight. Graphene oxide, a partially oxidised and electrically insulating form of graphene, has been employed in metal/insulator/metal devices, where resistance switching based on the filamentary growth of the contacting metals has been demonstrated. Here we demonstrate an alternative highly reproducible resistance switching mechanism based on solid-state reduction of GO thin-films mediated by adsorbed water. It is shown that distinguishable and highly stable resistance states can be controllably realised in graphene oxide metal/insulator/metal devices. We have unravelled the growth mechanism and determined the growth kinetic of reduced graphene oxide, which enables a deterministic way to tune the resistance in GO devices. The demonstration of highly reproducible memristors based on graphene oxide crossbar devices is very promising for the realisation of low-cost and environmentally benign solution-processable neuromorphic synaptic weight

    Electrical valley filtering in transition metal dichalcogenides

    This work investigates the feasibility of electrical valley filtering for holes in transition metal dichalcogenides. We look specifically into the scheme that utilizes a potential barrier to produce valley-dependent tunneling rates, and perform the study with both a k.p based analytic method and a recursive Green's function based numerical method. The study yields the transmission coefficient as a function of incident energy and transverse wave vector, for holes going through lateral quantum barriers oriented in either armchair or zigzag directions, in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. The main findings are the following: 1) the tunneling current valley polarization increases with increasing barrier width or height, 2) both the valley-orbit interaction and band structure warping contribute to valley-dependent tunneling, with the former contribution being manifest in structures with asymmetric potential barriers, and the latter being orientation-dependent and reaching maximum for transmission in the armchair direction, and 3) for transmission ~ 0.1, a tunneling current valley polarization of the order of 10% can be achieved.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
