    Field-enhanced direct tunneling in ultrathin atomic-layer-deposition-grown Au-Al2O3-Cr metal-insulator-metal structures

    Metal-insulator-metal structures based on ultrathin high-k dielectric films are underpinning a rapidly increasing number of devices and applications. Here, we report detailed electrical characterizations of asymmetric metal-insulator-metal devices featuring atomic layer deposited 2-nm-thick Al2O3 films. We find a high consistency in the current density as a function of applied electric field between devices with very different surface areas and significant asymmetries in the IV characteristics. We show by TEM that the thickness of the dielectric film and the quality of the metal-insulator interfaces are highly uniform and of high quality, respectively. In addition, we develop a model which accounts for the field enhancement due to the small sharp features on the electrode surface and show that this can very accurately describe the observed asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristic, which cannot be explained by the difference in work function alone

    Endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly and climate change: Short-term success but long-term vulnerability?

    The butterfly Euphydryas editha is known to be vulnerable to climate events that exacerbate natural phenological asynchrony between insect and hosts. In prior work, populations of E. editha have been more persistent at high latitudes and high elevations than in the south and at low elevations, consistent with response to observed warming climate. However, poleward range shifts by the endangered subspecies E. e. quino are blocked by urbanization and range shifts to higher elevation may require host shifts. Prior studies were inconclusive as to whether elevational and host shifts were already occurring. Here, we re-evaluate this scenario with new evidence from molecular genetics, host-choice behaviour and field recording of butterfly distribution. We found a statistically significant upward shift in population distribution since 2009. Insects in the expanding region were neither genomic outliers within Quino nor specifically adapted to their principal local host genus, Collinsia. These diverse data collectively support the hypothesis that an elevational range expansion is already in progress, accompanied and facilitated by a shift of principal host from Plantago to Collinsia. Quino appears resilient to warming climate. However, projections indicate that most or all of Quino’s current range in the USA, including the new high elevation expansion, will become uninhabitable. Our most frequent projected future range (circa 2050) is c. 400 km northward from current populations, hence conservation of Quino may eventually require assisted colonization. For now, Critical Habitat (sensu Endangered Species Act) has been designated at sites around the new upper elevational limit that were not known to be occupied. Designating Critical Habitat outside the historic range is a pioneering response to climate change. This politically challenging, non-traditional, climate change-oriented conservation effort exemplifies flexible thinking needed for species vulnerable to climate change

    Functional significance of the hepaCAM gene in bladder cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The hepaCAM gene encodes a new immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecule, and its expression is suppressed in a variety of human cancers. Additionally, hepaCAM possesses properties often observed in tumor suppressor genes. However, the expression and biological function of hepaCAM has not been investigated in bladder cancer. Therefore we sought to examine hepaCAM expression and the relationship between its structure and function in human transitional cell carcinoma of bladder (TCCB).</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>HepaCAM expression was evaluated in 28 normal and 34 TCCB bladder specimens and 2 TCCB cell lines using semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The wild-type hepaCAM and the extracellular domain-truncated mutant gene were transfected into the TCCB cell line T24, and the biological properties of both the wild-type gene and the domain-truncated mutant were then assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HepaCAM expression was down-regulated in 82% (28/34) of TCCB specimens and undetectable in the 2 TCCB cell lines tested. The localization of hepaCAM appeared to be dependent on cell density in T24 cells. In widely spread cells, hepaCAM accumulated on the perinuclear membrane and the cell surface protrusions, whereas in confluent cells, hepaCAM was predominantly localized at the sites of cell-cell contacts on the cell membrane. Functionally, hepaCAM expressed not only increased cell spreading, delayed cell detachment, enhanced wound healing and increased cell invasion; it also inhibited cell growth (P < 0.01). When the extracellular domain was deleted, the localization of hepaCAM was significantly altered, and it lost both its adhesive function and its influence on cell growth.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>HepaCAM is involved in cell adhesion and growth control, and its expression is frequently silenced in TCCB. The extracellular domain of hepaCAM is essential to its physiological and biological functions.</p

    The psychological impact of dependency in adults withchronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis: A qualitative exploration

    Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis can limit functional capacity, producing various degrees of disability and psychological distress. Semi-structured interviews explored the experiences of adults with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis being physically dependent on other people for help in daily life, and whether physical dependency affects their psychological well-being. Thematic analysis generated six themes: loss of independence and self-identity, an invisible illness, anxieties of today and the future, catch-22, internalised anger, and acceptance of the condition. The findings provide insight into the psychological impact of dependency. Implications for intervention include better education relating to chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis for family members, carers, and friends; ways to communicate their needs to others who may not understand chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis; and awareness that acceptance of the condition could improve psychological well-being

    Interaction of vortices in viscous planar flows

    We consider the inviscid limit for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the particular case where the initial flow is a finite collection of point vortices. We suppose that the initial positions and the circulations of the vortices do not depend on the viscosity parameter \nu, and we choose a time T > 0 such that the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff point vortex system is well-posed on the interval [0,T]. Under these assumptions, we prove that the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation converges, as \nu -> 0, to a superposition of Lamb-Oseen vortices whose centers evolve according to a viscous regularization of the point vortex system. Convergence holds uniformly in time, in a strong topology which allows to give an accurate description of the asymptotic profile of each individual vortex. In particular, we compute to leading order the deformations of the vortices due to mutual interactions. This allows to estimate the self-interactions, which play an important role in the convergence proof.Comment: 39 pages, 1 figur

    Assessment of the Biological Control Potential of Common Carabid Beetle Species for Autumn- and Winter-Active Pests (Gastropoda, Lepidoptera, Diptera: Tipulidae) in Annual Ryegrass in Western Oregon.

    While carabid beetles have been shown to feed on a variety of crop pests, little is known about their species assemblages in US annual ryegrass crops, where invertebrate pests, particularly slugs, lepidopteran larvae and craneflies, incur major financial costs. This study assesses the biological control potential of carabid beetles for autumn- and winter-active pests in annual ryegrass grown for seed by: (a) investigating the spatial and temporal overlap of carabids with key pests; and (b) molecular gut content analysis using qPCR. Introduced Nebria brevicollis was the only common carabid that was active during pest emergence in autumn, with 18.6% and 8.3% of N. brevicollis collected between September and October testing positive for lepidopteran and cranefly DNA, respectively, but only 1.7% testing positive for slug DNA. While pest DNA was also detected in the guts of the other common carabid species-Agonum muelleri, Calosoma cancellatum and Poecilus laetulus-these were active only during spring and summer, when crop damage by pests is less critical. None of the four carabid species was affected by disk tilling and only N. brevicollis was significantly associated with a vegetated field margin. However, as its impact on native ecosystems is unknown, we do not recommend managing for this species

    Attenuating Effect of Vigorous Physical Activity on the Risk for Inherited Obesity: A Study of 47,691 Runners

    Objective: Physical activity has been shown to attenuate the effect of the FTO polymorphism on body weight, and the heritability of body weight in twin and in family studies. The dose-response relationship between activity and the risk for inherited obesity is not well known, particularly for higher doses of vigorous exercise. Such information is needed to best prescribe an exercise dose for obesity prevention in those at risk due to their family history. Design: We therefore analyzed self-reported usual running distance, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and mother’s and father’s adiposity (1 = lean, 2 = normal, 3 = overweight, and 4 = very overweight) from survey data collected on 33,480 male and 14,211 female runners. Age-, education-, and alcohol-adjusted regression analyses were used to estimate the contribution of parental adiposities to the BMI and waist circumferences in runners who ran an average of,3, 3–6, 6–9, 9km/day.Results:BMIandwaistcircumferencesofrunnerswhoran,3km/dayweresignificantlyrelatedtotheirparentsadiposity(P,10215andP,10211,respectively).Theserelationships(i.e.,kg/m2orcmperincrementinparentaladiposity)diminishedsignificantlywithincreasingrunningdistanceforbothBMI(inheritance6exerciseinteraction,males:P,10210;females:P,1025)andwaistcircumference(inheritance6exerciseinteraction,males:P,1029;females:P=0.004).Comparedto,3km/day,theparentalcontributiontorunnerswhoaveraged9 km/day. Results: BMI and waist circumferences of runners who ran,3 km/day were significantly related to their parents adiposity (P,10 215 and P,10 211, respectively). These relationships (i.e., kg/m 2 or cm per increment in parental adiposity) diminished significantly with increasing running distance for both BMI (inheritance6exercise interaction, males: P,10 210; females: P,10 25) and waist circumference (inheritance6exercise interaction, males: P,10 29; females: P = 0.004).     Biological control of pestiferous slugs using Tetanocera elata (Fabricius) (Diptera: Sciomyzidae): Larval behavior and feeding on slugs exposed to Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider, 1859)

    While the larval stage of Tetanocera elata (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) is a known parasitoid and predator of pestiferous slugs, its biology and predatory behavior as well as its interaction with slug parasitic nematodes requires further investigation. In this study, survival of larvae fed from the neonate stage on Deroceras reticulatum Müller (a previously known prey species) was significantly greater (P = 0.023) than for larvae fed on Deroceras invadens Reise with 100% and 40% survival respectively. However, when fed solely on D. reticulatum which were previously exposed to P. hermaphrodita, only 20% of neonate larvae pupariated successfully. Ninety percent of neonate larvae maintained without food for the first four days and subsequently fed on D. reticulatum pupariated successfully although this decreased to below 50% for ≥6 days without food. Predatory third instar T. elata larvae appeared to select nematode-exposed D. reticulatum over non-exposed slugs with the continued feeding on nematode-exposed slugs also reducing the chances of successful pupariation by 25%. Records of maximum egg-laying by laboratory-reared female adults were greater (487 eggs) than previously recorded for field-caught adults (3 7 3). The implications of these results for the potential use of T. elata as a biological control agent of pestiferous slugs are discussed. © 2019 Elsevier Inc

    Multimodality Quantitative Assessments of Myocardial Perfusion Using Dynamic Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance and 15O-Labeled Water Positron Emission Tomography Imaging

    Kinetic modeling of myocardial perfusion imaging data allows the absolute quantification of myocardial blood flow (MBF) and can improve the diagnosis and clinical assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is considered the reference standard technique for absolute quantification, whilst oxygen-15 (15O)-water has been extensively implemented for MBF quantification. Dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has also been used for MBF quantification and showed comparable diagnostic performance against (¹⁵ O)-water PET studies. We investigated for the first time the diagnostic performance of two different PET MBF analysis softwares PMOD and Carimas, for obstructive CAD detection against invasive clinical standard methods in 20 patients with known or suspected CAD. Fermi and distributed parameter modeling-derived MBF quantification from DCE-MRI was also compared against (15O)-water PET, in a subgroup of six patients. The sensitivity and specificity for PMOD was significantly superior for obstructive CAD detection in both per vessel (0.83, 0.90) and per patient (0.86, 0.75) analysis, against Carimas (0.75, 0.65) and (0.81, 0.70), respectively. We showed strong, significant correlations between MR and PET MBF quantifications (r = 0.83 - 0.92). However, DP and PMOD analysis demonstrated comparable and higher hemodynamic differences between obstructive versus (no, minor, or non)-obstructive CAD, against Fermi and Carimas analysis. Our MR method assessments against the optimum PET reference standard technique for perfusion analysis showed promising results in per segment level and can support further multimodality assessments in larger patient cohorts. Further MR against PET assessments may help to determine their comparative diagnostic performance for obstructive CAD detection
