    Matching experimental and three dimensional numerical models for structural vibration problems with uncertainties

    © 2017 The Author(s) The simulation model which examines the dynamic behavior of real structures needs to address the impact of uncertainty in both geometry and material parameters. This article investigates three-dimensional finite element models for structural dynamics problems with respect to both model and parameter uncertainties. The parameter uncertainties are determined via laboratory measurements on several beam-like samples. The parameters are then considered as random variables to the finite element model for exploring the uncertainty effects on the quality of the model outputs, i.e. natural frequencies. The accuracy of the output predictions from the model is compared with the experimental results. To this end, the non-contact experimental modal analysis is conducted to identify the natural frequency of the samples. The results show a good agreement compared with experimental data. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that geometrical uncertainties have more influence on the natural frequencies compared to material parameters and material uncertainties are about two times higher than geometrical uncertainties. This gives valuable insights for improving the finite element model due to various parameter ranges required in a modeling process involving uncertainty

    Study on the sound absorption behavior of multi-component polyester nonwovens: experimental and numerical methods

    This study presents an investigation of the acoustical properties of multi-component polyester nonwovens with experimental and numerical methods. Fifteen types of nonwoven samples made with staple, hollow and bi-component polyester fibers were chosen to carry out this study. The AFD300 AcoustiFlow device was employed to measure airflow resistivity. Several models were grouped in theoretical and empirical model categories and used to predict the airflow resistivity. A simple empirical model based on fiber diameter and fabric bulk density was obtained through the power-fitting method. The difference between measured and predicted airflow resistivity was analyzed. The surface impedance and sound absorption coefficient were determined by using a 45 mm Materiacustica impedance tube. Some widely used impedance models were used to predict the acoustical properties. A comparison between measured and predicted values was carried out to determine the most accurate model for multi-component polyester nonwovens. The results show that one of the Tarnow model provides the closest prediction to the measured value, with an error of 12%. The proposed power-fitted empirical model exhibits a very small error of 6.8%. It is shown that the Delany–Bazley and Miki models can accurately predict surface impedance of multi-component polyester nonwovens, but the Komatsu model is less accurate, especially at the low-frequency range. The results indicate that the Miki model is the most accurate method to predict the sound absorption coefficient, with a mean error of 8.39%

    Sehnerven von zwei Patienten wurden histologisch untersucht, deren zugehörige Retinae einmal 11 und einmal 16 Jahre zuvor operativ entfernt wurden. In beiden Sehnerven wurden gleicherweise noch zahlreiche, feine Nervenfasern erhalten gefunden.     Cortical injury in multiple sclerosis; the role of the immune system

    The easily identifiable, ubiquitous demyelination and neuronal damage that occurs within the cerebral white matter of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been the subject of extensive study. Accordingly, MS has historically been described as a disease of the white matter. Recently, the cerebral cortex (gray matter) of patients with MS has been recognized as an additional and major site of disease pathogenesis. This acknowledgement of cortical tissue damage is due, in part, to more powerful MRI that allows detection of such injury and to focused neuropathology-based investigations. Cortical tissue damage has been associated with inflammation that is less pronounced to that which is associated with damage in the white matter. There is, however, emerging evidence that suggests cortical damage can be closely associated with robust inflammation not only in the parenchyma, but also in the neighboring meninges. This manuscript will highlight the current knowledge of inflammation associated with cortical tissue injury. Historical literature along with contemporary work that focuses on both the absence and presence of inflammation in the cerebral cortex and in the cerebral meninges will be reviewed

    Gardens of happiness: Sir William Temple, temperance and China

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordSir William Temple, an English statesman and humanist, wrote “Upon the Gardens of Epicurus” in 1685, taking a neo-epicurean approach to happiness and temperance. In accord with Pierre Gassendi’s epicureanism, “happiness” is characterised as freedom from disturbance and pain in mind and body, whereas “temperance” means following nature (Providence and one’s physiopsychological constitution). For Temple, cultivating fruit trees in his garden was analogous to the threefold cultivation of temperance as a virtue in the humoral body (as food), the mind (as freedom from the passions), and the bodyeconomic (as circulating goods) in order to attain happiness. A regimen that was supposed to cure the malaise of Restoration amidst a crisis of unbridled passions, this threefold cultivation of temperance underlines Temple’s reception of China and Confucianism wherein happiness and temperance are highlighted. Thus Temple’s “gardens of happiness” represent not only a reinterpretation of classical ideas, but also his dialogue with China.European CommissionLeverhulme Trus
