    Individual Philanthropy Patterns in Metro Atlanta

    This report responds to the question of what do Metro-Atlanta nonprofit leaders know about why individuals give to charity. Specifically, there are several questions that are fundamental to this initial study. They include:* Who is giving?* What motivates individuals to give?* How much is being given?* Where is the giving being directed?The study is an initial attempt commissioned by The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to collect reliable baseline data on individual giving patterns in the Twenty-two County Atlanta region. The information is to be used for understanding the demographic characteristics of givers as well as their perceptions, beliefs, values, and attitudes about charitable giving, volunteering, charitable organizations, and the factors that motivate them to support nonprofit organizations. In addition, the data also provides insight into the types of information that are most useful to individuals when making their giving decisions, and direction about issues the nonprofit sector must address to increase giving and enhance its visibility and legitimacy

    Monitoring Macroalgae in the Great Bay Estuary for 2014

    Four more intertidal fixed transect sites were added to the long5term macroalgal monitoring array, resulting in a total of eight sites for the Great Bay Estuary. Monitoring results from 2014 show high levels of cover of nuisance green and red algae (Ulva and Gracilaria, respectively) at all sites except near the mouth of the Estuary. Seasonal sampling of algal cover confirmed earlier work that showed mid5summer accumulations of green algae (primarily Ulva)lactuca) were largely replaced in late summer and fall by red algae (two species of Graciliaria, one native and the other introduced). A determination of whether intertidal macroalgal populations are increasing over time will require a longer time series and would likely benefit from historical analysis of earlier collections of intertidal macroalgae.     [From text] There is no doubt that the past two decades have brought radical changes to tertiary education throughout the world. In essence, this was the consequence of the commoditisation of knowledge. The past three decades have seen the emergence of the knowledge-based economy. Knowledge is replacing physical and tangible assets as the key driver of wealth creation and economic growth. How national governments responded to this became critical. Generally, as in the case of Britain, the transition was driven by governments anxious to precipitate their economies into the new era. At the same time, the prohibitive costs of offering free or heavily subsidised tertiary education became a fiscal burden seen as untenable in a post-Keynesian, neo-liberal environment where ‘small government is beautiful’. Often, the transition was successful beyond their expectations because of the ease with which tertiary funding was slashed without serious protest from academics or political constituencies. However, the transition has not only threatened the traditional role and perception of universities in society, it has catapulted many economies onto developmental paths that now challenge the traditional concepts of society, nation, and in particular, the university

    Wheels on the Bus: School Transportation as a Reflection of Sprawl

    The second half of the twentieth century constituted a change in land use ideology and development practice brought about by the rise of the automobile, increasing economic upward mobility, and privatization of the family home. During this time, the districting and building of public schools similarly changed, turning schools from local community centers to regional and de-contextualized places of education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which these development practices have caused children to rely on car and bus transportation to get to and from school. Using the variable of distance within a GIS analysis of three case study locations in California, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, we tested the hypothesis that the increasing regionalization of schools in conjunction with the sprawl of developed parcels diminishes walkability to those schools for the children who attend them. Our results suggest that increased distance from schools and the districting mandates for determining school attendance decrease the ability of children to walk to school, reflecting the shift to automobile-centered land use. Our research also suggests that infrastructure-related walkability is further impeded by economic, cultural, and socio-psychological norms that are in many ways connected to or facilitated by the automobile

    Laboratory guide to early life history stages of northeast Pacific fishes

    This laboratory guide presents taxonomic information on eggs and larvae of fishes of the Northeast Pacific Ocean (north of California) and the eastern Bering Sea. Included are early-life-history series, illustrations, and comparative descriptions of 232 species expected to spawn here, out of a total 627 species known to occur in marine waters of this area. Meristic and general life-history data are included, as well as diagnostic characters to help identify eggs and larvae. Most of this information has been gleaned from literature, with the addition of 200 previously unpublished illustrations. (PDF file contains 654 pages.

    Displacement Data Assimilation

    We show that modifying a Bayesian data assimilation scheme by incorporating kinematically-consistent displacement corrections produces a scheme that is demonstrably better at estimating partially observed state vectors in a setting where feature information important. While the displacement transformation is not tied to any particular assimilation scheme, here we implement it within an ensemble Kalman Filter and demonstrate its effectiveness in tracking stochastically perturbed vortices.Comment: 26 Pages, 9 figures, 5 table

    Butterflies in the family Lycaenidac are often the focus of conservation efforts. However, our understanding of lycaenid population dynamics has been limited to relatively few examples of long-term monitoring data that have been reported. Here, factors associated with population regulation are investigated using a complete record of a single population of the silvery blue, Glaucopsyche lygdamus Doubleday (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). Adults of G. lygdamus were first observed in an annual grassland near Davis, California, in 1982 and were last seen in 2003. Relationships between inter-annual variation in abundance and climatic variables were examined, accounting for density dependent effects. Significant effects of both negative density dependence and climatic variation were detected, particularly precipitation and temperature during winter months. Variation in precipitation, the strongest predictor of abundance, was associated directly and positively with butterfly abundance in the same year. Winter temperatures had a negative effect in the same year, but had a lagged, positive effect on abundance in the subsequent year.     Metallicity Evolution in the Early Universe

    Observations of the damped Lya systems provide direct measurements on the chemical enrichment history of neutral gas in the early universe. In this Letter, we present new measurements for four damped Lya systems at high redshift. Combining these data with [Fe/H] values culled from the literature, we investigate the metallicity evolution of the universe from z~1.5-4.5. Contrary to our expectations and the predictions of essentially every chemical evolution model, the N(HI)-weighted mean [Fe/H] metallicity exhibits minimal evolution over this epoch. For the individual systems, we report tentative evidence for an evolution in the unweighted [Fe/H] mean and the scatter in [Fe/H] with the higher redshift systems showing lower scatter and lower typical [Fe/H] values. We also note that no damped Lya system has [Fe/H] < -2.7 dex. Finally, we discuss the potential impact of small number statistics and dust on our conclusions and consider the implications of these results on chemical evolution in the early universe.Comment: 6 pages, 2 encapsulated figures, Latex2e, uses emulateapj.sty and onecolfloat.sty.
