    A Pilot Study of Halal Goat-Meat Consumption in Atlanta, Georgia

    Atlanta is a relatively large market for goat meat. As in most metropolitan areas around the U.S., goat-meat consumption has grown steadily in Atlanta over the past decade (Northwest Cooperative Development Center 2005; Nettles and Bukenya 2004). This growth is attributed to the influx of immigrants from goat-meat-eating countries into the U.S. over the same period (Gipson 1999). The increase in demand for goat meat has made the U.S. a net importer of competitively priced goat meat from Australia and New Zealand into major U.S cities such as Atlanta (USDA-FAS 2006). The fact that goat-meat imports from Australia have steadily increased over the years makes markets such as Atlanta of particular interest to both Georgia goat-meat suppliers and meat-goat producers. The goat-meat market, however, is highly segmented (Nelson et al. 2004; Mclean-Meyinsse 2003). Recognition of the diversity among Atlanta goat-meat consumers raises interest in identifying preferences of particular segments. One such segment is the Muslim consumer. However, very limited information is available to help assess the preferences of Muslim consumers in the Atlanta goat-meat market. This study focuses on the Muslim segment of actual goat-meat consumers in the metro Atlanta area. Contrary to earlier assertions, we hypothesize that Muslims eat goat-meat for cultural reasons and not for religious reasons. Furthermore, we assert that Muslims are not a single homogenous niche group and should not be treated as such in marketing. Thus this study examines goat-meat consumption patterns among Muslims in metropolitan Atlanta.     Large evolution of the bilinear Higgs coupling parameter in SUSY models and reduction of phase sensitivity

    The phases in a generic low-energy supersymmetric model are severely constrained by the experimental upper bounds on the electric dipole moments of the electron and the neutron. Coupled with the requirement of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, this results in a large degree of fine tuning of the phase parameters at the unification scale. In supergravity type models, this corresponds to very highly tuned values for the phases of the bilinear Higgs coupling parameter BB and the universal trilinear coupling A0A_0. We identify a cancellation/enhancement mechanism associated with the renormalization group evolution of BB, which, in turn, reduces such fine-tuning quite appreciably without taking recourse to very large masses for the supersymmetric partners. We find a significant amount of reduction of this fine-tuning in nonuniversal gaugino mass models that do not introduce any new phases.Comment: Version to appear in Phys.Rev.D.     Numerical Investigation on Flow Separation Control of Low Reynolds Number Sinusoidal Aerofoils

    The paper presents a computational analysis of the characteristics of a NACA 634- 021 aerofoil incorporated with sinusoidal leading-edge protuberances at Re = 14,000. The protuberances are characterized by an amplitude and wavelength of 12% and 50% of the aerofoil chord length respectively. An unsteady Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) analysis of the full-span aerofoils was carried out using Transition SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model across five different angles-of-attack (AOA). Comparisons with previous experimental results reported good qualitative agreements in terms of flow separation when the aerofoils are pitched at higher AOAs. Results presented here comprised of near-wall flow visualizations of the flow separation bubble at the peaks and troughs of the protuberances. Additionally, results indicate that the aerofoil with leading-edge protuberances displayed distinctive wall shear streamline and iso-contour characteristics at different span-wise positions. This implies that even at a low Reynolds number, implementations of these leading-edge protuberances could have positive or adverse effects on flow separation

Four reference science activity models are used to illustrate the effect of adding operational flexibility to mission timelines. For each method, a brief explanation is given along with graphs to illustrate the application of the envelopes to the power and crew resources. The benefits and costs of each method are analyzed in terms of resource utilization. In addition to the effect on individual activities, resource envelopes are analyzed at the experiment level

    Two-dimensional numerical simulation of a Stirling engine heat exchanger

    The first phase of an effort to develop multidimensional models of Stirling engine components is described; the ultimate goal is to model an entire engine working space. More specifically, parallel plate and tubular heat exchanger models with emphasis on the central part of the channel (i.e., ignoring hydrodynamic and thermal end effects) are described. The model assumes: laminar, incompressible flow with constant thermophysical properties. In addition, a constant axial temperature gradient is imposed. The governing equations, describing the model, were solved using Crank-Nicloson finite-difference scheme. Model predictions were compared with analytical solutions for oscillating/reversing flow and heat transfer in order to check numerical accuracy. Excellent agreement was obtained for the model predictions with analytical solutions available for both flow in circular tubes and between parallel plates. Also the heat transfer computational results are in good agreement with the heat transfer analytical results for parallel plates
