    ISSN exercise & sport nutrition review: research & recommendations

    Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually. For this reason, keeping up to date with the literature is often difficult. This paper is a five year update of the sports nutrition review article published as the lead paper to launch the JISSN in 2004 and presents a well-referenced overview of the current state of the science related to how to optimize training and athletic performance through nutrition. More specifically, this paper provides an overview of: 1.) The definitional category of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements; 2.) How dietary supplements are legally regulated; 3.) How to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4.) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and enhance recovery; and, 5.) An overview of our current understanding of the ergogenic value of nutrition and dietary supplementation in regards to weight gain, weight loss, and performance enhancement. Our hope is that ISSN members and individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice and consultation with their clients

    Phylogenetic relationships of the New World titi monkeys (Callicebus): First appraisal of taxonomy based on molecular evidence

    Background: Titi monkeys, Callicebus, comprise the most species-rich primate genus-34 species are currently recognised, five of them described since 2005. The lack of molecular data for titi monkeys has meant that little is known of their phylogenetic relationships and divergence times. To clarify their evolutionary history, we assembled a large molecular dataset by sequencing 20 nuclear and two mitochondrial loci for 15 species, including representatives from all recognised species groups. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using concatenated maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses, allowing us to evaluate the current taxonomic hypothesis for the genus. Results: Our results show four distinct Callicebus clades, for the most part concordant with the currently recognised morphological species-groups-the torquatus group, the personatus group, the donacophilus group, and the moloch group. The cupreus and moloch groups are not monophyletic, and all species of the formerly recognized cupreus group are reassigned to the moloch group. Two of the major divergence events are dated to the Miocene. The torquatus group, the oldest radiation, diverged c. 11 Ma; and the Atlantic forest personatus group split from the ancestor of all donacophilus and moloch species at 9-8 Ma. There is little molecular evidence for the separation of Callicebus caligatus and C. dubius, and we suggest that C. dubius should be considered a junior synonym of a polymorphic C. caligatus. Conclusions: Considering molecular, morphological and biogeographic evidence, we propose a new genus level taxonomy for titi monkeys: Cheracebus n. gen. in the Orinoco, Negro and upper Amazon basins (torquatus group), Callicebus Thomas, 1903, in the Atlantic Forest (personatus group), and Plecturocebus n. gen. in the Amazon basin and Chaco region (donacophilus and moloch groups). © 2016 Byrne et al

    Quality assurance for composite structures An integrated process

    It is described, that quality assurance proceedings in the aeronautics industry differ from the QA measures applied in regular industry. The high quality standards on aircraft passenger demands, are requiring measures which are confirmed due to the low number of accidents. The fast increasing application of Fibre Reinforced Plastics requested a concentrated and integrated cooperation of all involved disciplines. Design, M and P engineers, manufacturing and quality assurance personnel have found efficient ways for a successful concurrent engineering. A complete understanding of the peculiarities composites contain is a must which is managed in the aeronautic industry by a quality assurance control system. Methods to handle that complex designs and processes have been developed and verified. The QA measures ensure a tractability of materials and processes. The inspection methods such as monitoring of production, measurements, destructive and non destructive inspection are providing reliability.     Description of antennal structures of the parasitoid Mallophora ruficauda (Diptera: Asilidae) and its relationship with resources searching behaviour

    The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is a parasitoid of white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) inhabiting in Pampas region of Argentina. Females locate host’s habitat and lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After hatching, larvae fall to the ground and actively seek hosts. Previous works suggested that female would detect the presence of host’s chemical cues, but sensory organs involved in olfaction are still unknown. However, few studies have looked at dipteran parasitoids sensilla, and no study has been undertaken in Asilidae species. The aim of this work was to determine the presence, density, distribution and morphology of chemosensilla in M. ruficauda antennae using optic and scanning microscope techniques. We found that antennae have 4 segments: scape, pedicel, postpedicel and style. We identified basiconic and trichoid sensilla, small and long bristles, and sensory pits. Basiconic sensilla are multiporous and are widely spread between the small bristles through the postpedicel. Trichoid sensilla are grouped in 6–8 units on latero-ventral margin of postpedicel, have mobile base, striated wall and an apical porous. Small bristles are present in the pedicel and postpedicel, and long bristles are found in groups on scape and pedicel. Three different types of sensory pits were observed, with basiconic sensilla, distributed along external and internal lateral side of the postpedicel. Considering the morphological characteristics of the antennae, and based on the olfaction biomechanics, the structure and distribution of these cuticular structures of the parasitoid antennae would contribute to the odour detection mechanism in adults of M. ruficauda.Fil: Groba, Hernán Federico.
