    Photocurable Bioink for the Inkjet 3D Pharming of Hydrophilic Drugs.

    Novel strategies are required to manufacture customized oral solid dosage forms for personalized medicine applications. 3D Pharming, the direct printing of pharmaceutical tablets, is an attractive strategy, since it allows for the rapid production of solid dosage forms containing custom drug dosages. This study reports on the design and characterization of a biocompatible photocurable pharmaceutical polymer for inkjet 3D printing that is suitable for hydrophilic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Specifically, hyaluronic acid was functionalized with norbornene moieties that, in the presence of poly(ethylene) glycol dithiol, Eosin Y as a photoinitiator, and a visible light source, undergoes a rapid step-growth polymerization reaction through thiol-ene chemistry. The engineered bioink was loaded with Ropinirole HCL, dispensed through a piezoelectric nozzle onto a blank preform tablet, and polymerized. Drug release analysis of the tablet resulted in 60% release within 15 min of tablet dissolution. The study confirms the potential of inkjet printing for the rapid production of tablets through the deposition of a photocurable bioink designed for hydrophilic APIs

    Zesting of braided fusion categories is a procedure that can be used to obtain new modular categories from a modular category with non-trivial invertible objects. In this paper, we classify and construct all possible braided zesting data for modular categories associated with quantum groups at roots of unity. We produce closed formulas, based on the root system of the associated Lie algebra, for the modular data of these new modular categories.Comment: 35 pages, 22 table

    Reciprocal recurrent selection based on genetic complementation: An efficient way to build heterosis in diploids due to directional dominance

    Depending on the trait architecture and reproduction system, selection strategies in plant breeding focus on the accumulation of additive, dominance effects, or both. Innovation in the exploitation of dominance‐effect‐based heterosis has been limited since the proposal of general combining ability (GCA)‐based approaches. We propose the use of a new surrogate of genetic complementation between genetic pools to increase accumulation of dominance effects and heterosis. We simulated breeding programs to show how reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) by genetic complementation would build the dominance‐based heterosis cheaper than GCA‐based approaches and used real phenotypic data from hybrid maize (Zea mays) to demonstrate the underlying concepts. We found RRS by genetic complementation to be an attractive and viable strategy to exploit dominance, build de novo heterotic pools, and enhance the current GCA‐based approaches. If demonstrated in practice, we hypothesized that this approach would lower the cost of hybrid breeding drastically and contribute to food security

    Consumo de sustancias psicoactivas en una universidad privada de Pasto, Colombia/ Psychoactive substances at a private university from Pasto, Colombia

    Este trabajo es resultado de una investigación de corte cuantitativo y de tipo descriptivo-transversal, que buscó describir y asociar factores sociodemográficos con consumo de sustancias psicoactivas en estudiantes de una universidad privada en la ciudad de Pasto, Colombia. Para cumplir el objetivo, se diseñó y validó un cuestionario que luego se aplicó a 242 estudiantes. Los resultados mostraron que el 21,9 % ha consumido algún tipo de sustancia psicoactiva y 12,4 % reporta haberlas consumido simultáneamente con alcohol. La marihuana es la droga más consumida (11,2 %), seguida de cocaína (9,1 %). El consumo de sustancias psicoactivas se asoció significativamente con sexo, siendo los hombres quienes más consumen (p < 0,05). También se asoció con semestre y estrato socioeconómico, es decir, que el consumo de sustancias psicoactivas varía en función de estas variables. Los datos advierten que la marihuana es la principal sustancia de consumo entre universitarios, simultánea al consumo de alcohol. El impacto preventivo debe focalizarse en variables como sexo y semestre

    The contribution of poor and rural populations to national trends in reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health coverage: analyses of cross-sectional surveys from 64 countries

    Background Coverage levels for essential interventions aimed at reducing deaths of mothers and children are increasing steadily in most low-income and middle-income countries. We assessed how much poor and rural populations in these countries are benefiting from national-level progress. Methods We analysed trends in a composite coverage indicator (CCI) based on eight reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health interventions in 209 national surveys in 64 countries, from Jan 1, 1994, to Dec 31, 2014. Trends by wealth quintile and urban or rural residence were fitted with multilevel modelling. We used an approach akin to the calculation of population attributable risk to quantify the contribution of poor and rural populations to national trends. Findings From 1994 to 2014, the CCI increased by 0·82 percent points a year across all countries; households in the two poorest quintiles had an increase of 0·99 percent points a year, which was faster than that for the three wealthiest quintiles (0·68 percent points). Gains among poor populations were faster in lower-middle-income and uppermiddle- income countries than in low-income countries. Globally, national level increases in CCI were 17·5% faster than they would have been without the contribution of the two poorest quintiles. Coverage increased more rapidly annually in rural (0·93 percent points) than urban (0·52 percent points) areas. Interpretation National coverage gains were accelerated by important increases among poor and rural mothers and children. Despite progress, important inequalities persist, and need to be addressed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

    Scientific production profile of leading universities leading universities in Latin American countries

    Scientific production in Latin America is mainly concentrated in Higher Education Institutions located in Brazil and Mexico, characterized by the high volume of papers published and citations received. However, universities in other countries of the region also stand out for their excellence in research. This paper describes the scientific production profile of leading universities in Latin American countries positioned in the top ten of the SCImago Journal &amp; Country Rank. Using five indicators reported in the SIRiber 2020 Report, the profile of these leading universities is characterized with respect to Normalized Impact, Scientific Leadership, Open Access, International Collaboration and High-Quality Publications. As a result, the scientific production of this group of Latin American universities, leaders in their countries, is characterized by 50% international collaboration, especially of foreign main authors, 38% impact below the world average of citations, 45% of open access publications and 39% of Q1 publications.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp
