    Transit observations at the observatory in Grossschwabhausen: XO-1b and TrES-1

    We report on observations of transit events of the transiting planets XO-1b and TrES-1 with the AIU Jena telescope in Grossschwabhausen. Based on our IR photometry (in March 2007) and available transit timings (SuperWASP, XO and TLC-project-data) we improved the orbital period of XO-1b (P = 3.941497±\pm0.000006) and TrES-1 (P = 3.0300737±\pm0.000006), respectively.     Transition from non-motile behaviour to directed migration during early PGC development in zebrafish

    International audienceThe migration of zebrafish primordial germ cells (PGCs) is directed by SDF-1a and serves as a model for long-range chemokine-guided cell migration. Whereas the development and migration of zebrafish PGCs have been studied in great detail starting at mid-gastrulation stages when the cells exhibit guided active migration [7-8 hours post fertilization (hpf)], earlier stages have not yet been examined. Here we show that the PGCs acquire competence to respond to the chemokine following discrete maturation steps. Using the promoter of the novel gene askopos and RNA elements of nanos1 to drive GFP expression in PGCs, we found that immediately after their specification (about 3 hpf) PGCs exhibit simple cell shape. This stage is followed by a phase at which the cells assume complex morphology yet they neither change their position nor do they respond to SDF-1a. During the third phase, a transition into a ;migratory stage' occurs as PGCs become responsive to directional cues provided by somatic cells secreting the chemokine SDF-1a. This transition depends on zygotic transcription and on the function of the RNA-binding protein Dead end and is correlated with down regulation of the cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin. These distinctive morphological and molecular alterations could represent a general occurrence in similar processes critical for development and disease

    We report on observation and determination of rotational periods of ten weak-line T Tauri stars in the Cepheus-Cassiopeia star-forming region. Observations were carried out with the Cassegrain-Teleskop-Kamera (CTK) at University Observatory Jena between 2007 June and 2008 May.     WASP-14 b: Transit Timing analysis of 19 light curves

    Although WASP-14 b is one of the most massive and densest exoplanets on a tight and eccentric orbit, it has never been a target of photometric follow-up monitoring or dedicated observing campaigns. We report on new photometric transit observations of WASP-14 b obtained within the framework of "Transit Timing Variations @ Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative" (TTV@YETI). We collected 19 light-curves of 13 individual transit events using six telescopes located in five observatories distributed in Europe and Asia. From light curve modelling, we determined the planetary, stellar, and geometrical properties of the system and found them in agreement with the values from the discovery paper. A test of the robustness of the transit times revealed that in case of a non-reproducible transit shape the uncertainties may be underestimated even with a wavelet-based error estimation methods. For the timing analysis we included two publicly available transit times from 2007 and 2009. The long observation period of seven years (2007-2013) allowed us to refine the transit ephemeris. We derived an orbital period 1.2 s longer and 10 times more precise than the one given in the discovery paper. We found no significant periodic signal in the timing-residuals and, hence, no evidence for TTV in the system.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 7 table

    A lucky imaging multiplicity study of exoplanet host stars

    To understand the influence of additional wide stellar companions on planet formation, it is necessary to determine the fraction of multiple stellar systems amongst the known extrasolar planet population. We target recently discovered radial velocity exoplanetary systems observable from the northern hemisphere and with sufficiently high proper motion to detect stellar companions via direct imaging. We utilize the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope in combination with its lucky imaging camera AstraLux. 71 planet host stars have been observed so far, yielding one new low-mass (0.239 \pm 0.022M\odot) stellar companion, 4.5 arcsec (227AU of projected separation) northeast of the planet host star HD185269, detected via astrometry with AstraLux. We also present follow-up astrometry on three previously discovered stellar companions, showing for the first time common proper motion of the 0.5 arcsec companion to HD126614. Additionally, we determined the achieved detection limits for all targets, which allows us to characterize the detection space of possible further companions of these stars

    Towards the Rosetta Stone of planet formation

    Transiting exoplanets (TEPs) observed just about 10 Myrs after formation of their host systems may serve as the Rosetta Stone for planet formation theories. They would give strong constraints on several aspects of planet formation, e.g. time-scales (planet formation would then be possible within 10 Myrs), the radius of the planet could indicate whether planets form by gravitational collapse (being larger when young) or accretion growth (being smaller when young).     The continued spectral and temporal evolution of RX J0720.4-3125

    RX J0720.4-3125 is the most peculiar object among a group of seven isolated X-ray pulsars (the so-called "Magnificent Seven"), since it shows long-term variations of its spectral and temporal properties on time scales of years. This behaviour was explained by different authors either by free precession (with a seven or fourteen years period) or possibly a glitch that occurred around MJD=52866±73days\mathrm{MJD=52866\pm73 days}. We analysed our most recent XMM-Newton and Chandra observations in order to further monitor the behaviour of this neutron star. With the new data sets, the timing behaviour of RX J0720.4-3125 suggests a single (sudden) event (e.g. a glitch) rather than a cyclic pattern as expected by free precession. The spectral parameters changed significantly around the proposed glitch time, but more gradual variations occurred already before the (putative) event. Since MJD53000days\mathrm{MJD\approx53000 days} the spectra indicate a very slow cooling by \sim2 eV over 7 years.Comment: seven pages, three figures, three tables; accepted by MNRA
