    Fiber Volume Fraction Effects on Fatigue Response of a SCS-6/Ti-15-3 Metal Matrix Composite at Elevated Temperature

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of fiber volume fraction on the fatigue behavior of Silicon Carbide fiber-reinforced Titanium alloy, SCS-6/Ti-15-3. Three fiber volume fractions were investigated; 15%, 25%, and 42%. The tests were performed under fully-reversed, strain-controlled conditions at 427 °C. The primary objectives of this study were to develop a fatigue life diagram and to document the damage and failure mechanisms. Compressive loads on the slender specimens were kept from buckling the specimens through the use of a buckling guide. This device allows unrestricted axial movement of the composite, while preventing any out-of-plane motion. No buckling damage due to compression was found in any of the specimens. Modulus behavior and stress versus strain curves were recorded during cycling for each test. An applied strain range between 0.5% and 1.1% was used for the majority of the tests. This resulted in fatigue lives between approximately 10,000 and 100,000 cycles. The resulting fatigue life diagram showed similar life at strain ranges at and above 0.008 mm/mm for all fiber volume fractions. At strain levels below 0.008 mm/mm, there was an increasing fatigue life with increasing fiber volume fraction. The 15% and 42% Vf material was consolidated with a molybdenum cross-weave to hold the fibers in alignment. The 25% Vf material had a titanium-niobium cross-weave for the same purpose. The Mo cross-weave was present on every fracture surface of the 15% and 42% Vf material. This indicated that it was detrimental to the fatigue life of the composite. No cross-weave material was found on the fracture surfaces of the 25% Vf. Major cause of specimen failure was the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in the matrix that were perpendicular to the applied load

    Selexipag in the management of pulmonary arterial hypertension: an update

    Selexipag is a compound that was designed to overcome the issues associated with oral administration of prostanoid compounds, beraprost and treprostinil in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension (PAH). As a selective IP agonist, it was designed to avoid the off-target prostanoid effects especially in the gastrointestinal system. To place this compound in context, this paper briefly reviews the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of subcutaneous, inhaled, and oral prostanoid preparations and comparesthemto selexipag. Selexipag is the first agent targeting a prostanoid receptor where a reduction in the primary efficacy morbidity/mortality composite end-point has been demonstrated. While safety outcomes favor selexipag over placebo, tolerability issues remain. Efficacy in terms of improvement in effort tolerance, hemodynamic and mortality benefit is less than seen with IV therapy. This is the first prostanoid demonstrated in a clinical trial to have added benefit in those on background double combination therapy and the first non IV prostanoid to demonstrate outcome benefit in the connective tissue disease (CTD) population in a randomized controlled trial

    Ethnobiology : the missing link in ecology and evolution

    Evolutionary biologists and ecologists increasingly appreciate the value of local knowledge of human communities for research into the past, present, and future of biodiversity. However, there are often significant problems accessing and interpreting this knowledge. Here, we argue that closer interaction with ethnobiologists, who study the relation between humans and the natural world, will enable local knowledge to be better applied in ecological and evolutionary biological research. This will provide more comprehensive answers to the scientific questions being asked, and will result in improved engagement with both academic and non-academic communities

    A unique 3D nitrogen-doped carbon composite as high-performance oxygen reduction catalyst

    The synthesis and properties of an oxygen reduction catalyst based on a unique 3-dimensional (3D) nitrogen doped (N-doped) carbon composite are described. The composite material is synthesised via a two-step hydrothermal and pyrolysis method using bio-source low-cost materials of galactose and melamine. Firstly, the use of iron salts and galactose to hydrothermally produceiron oxide (Fe₂O₃) magnetic nanoparticle clusters embedded carbon spheres. Secondly, magnetic nanoparticles diffused out of the carbon sphere when pyrolysed in the presence of melamine as nitrogen precursor. Interestingly, many of these nanoparticles, as catalyst-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs), resulted in the formation of N-doped CNTs and N-doped carbon spheres under the decomposition of carbon and a nitrogen environment.     Technology adoption in the BIM implementation for lean architectural practice

    Justification for Research: the construction companies are facing barriers and challenges in BIM adoption as there is no clear guidance or best practice studies from which they can learn and build up their capacity for BIM use in order to increase productivity, efficiency, quality, and to attain competitive advantages in the global market and to achieve the targets in environmental sustainability. Purpose: this paper aims to explain a comprehensive and systemic evaluation and assessment of the relevant BIM technologies as part of the BIM adoption and implementation to demonstrate how efficiency gains have been achieved towards a lean architectural practice. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research is undertaken through a KTP (Knowledge transfer Partnership) project between the University of Salford and the John McCall Architects based in Liverpool, which is an SME (Small Medium Enterprise). The overall aim of KTP is to develop Lean Design Practice through the BIM adoption and implementation. The overall BIM implementation approach uses a socio-technical view in which it does not only consider the implementation of technology but also considers the socio-cultural environment that provides the context for its implementation. The technology adoption methodology within the BIM implementation approach is the action research oriented qualitative and quantitative research for discovery, comparison, and experimentation as the KTP project with JMA provides an environment for “learning by doing” Findings: research has proved that BIM technology adoption should be undertaken with a bottom-up approach rather than top-down approach for successful change management and dealing with the resistance to change. As a result of the BIM technology adoption, efficiency gains are achieved through the piloting projects and the design process is improved through the elimination of wastes and value generation. Originality/Value: successful BIM adoption needs an implementation strategy. However, at operational level, it is imperative that professional guidelines are required as part of the implementation strategy. This paper introduces a systematic approach for BIM technology adoption based on a case study implementation and it demonstrates a guideline at operational level for other SME companies of architectural practices

    Neonatal abstinence syndrome.

    A 12 month review of infants admitted with neonatal abstinence syndrome to a neonatal intensive care unit was undertaken. The relationship of maternal drug abuse to symptoms, the effectiveness of pharmacologic agents in controlling symptoms and the length of inpatient stay were investigated. A retrospective review of maternal and infant records was performed. Those infants with a serial Finnegan score greater than 8 were treated. Pharmacologic treatment was oral morphine sulphate (0.2 mg 4-6 hourly), phenobarbitone (3-7 mgs/kg/day), or combination of the above. 43 infants were admitted to the hospital during the year. The average maternal age was 24.6 years, (18-34 years). Drug use volunteered by the mothers was methadone alone in 6 cases, methadone and benzodiazepines in 14, methadone and heroin and benzodiazepines in 7, methadone and heroin in 10, heroin alone in 2, and other multiple drug use including oral morphine sulphate, dothiepin and cannabis in 4. Average gestational age was 40.3 (35-42 weeks). The average birthweight was 2.81 kgs (1.89-3.91 kgs). Time to onset of withdrawal symptoms was 2.8 (1-13) days. The duration of pharmacologic treatment (oral morphine sulphate and/or phenobarbitone) was 21.8 (1-62) days. The total hospital stay for the 43 infants was 1,011 days. This study confirms that polydrug abuse is the commonest type of drug abuse in Dublin. The duration of withdrawal symptoms is loosely related to drug type, but increasing duration of symptoms is noted for infants exposed to benzodiazepines. Our experience would favour the use of morphine sulphate to treat pure opiate withdrawal symptoms. Over the 12-month period, there was an average occupancy of 3 beds per day in the paediatric department

    The Effect of Physiological Cyclic Stretch on the Cell Morphology, Cell Orientation and Protein Expression of Endothelial Cells

    In vivo, endothelial cells are constantly exposed to pulsatile shear and tensile stresses. The main aim of this study was to design and build a physiological simulator, which reproduced homogenous strain profiles of the tensile strain experienced in vivo, and to investigate the effect of this cyclic tensile strain on the cell morphology, cell orientation and protein expression of endothelial cells. The biological response of human umbilical vein endothelial cells to a uniaxial cyclic stretch, in this newly developed simulator, was examined experimentally using immunohistostaining and confocal imaging and it was found that the cells elongated and oriented at 58.9± 4.5. This value was compared to a mathematical model where it was revealed that endothelial cells would orient at an angle of 60. This model also revealed that endothelial cells have an axial strain threshold value of 1.8% when exposed to a 10% cyclic strain at 1 Hz for 3 h. Cells cultured under conditions of cyclic strain showed increased ICAM-1 immunostaining when compared to static cells whereas, a marked decrease in the levels of VCAM-1 receptor staining was also observed. Haemodynamic stresses can modulate the endothelial cell adhesion response in vivo thus, taken together; this data validates the bioreactor as replicating the physiological environment

    Dilemmas in doing insider research in professional education

    This article explores the dilemmas I encountered when researching social work education in England as an insider researcher who was simultaneously employed as an educator in the host institution. This was an ethnographic project deploying multiple methods and generating rich case study material which informed the student textbook Becoming a Social Worker the four-year period of the project. First, ethical dilemmas emerged around informed consent and confidentiality when conducting surveys of students and reading their portfolios. Second, professional dilemmas stemmed from the ways in which my roles as a researcher, academic tutor, social worker and former practice educator converged and collided. Third, political dilemmas pertained to the potential for the project to crystallize and convey conflicts among stakeholders in the university and community. Since the majority of research in social work education is conducted by insiders, we have a vital interest in making sense of such complexity

    Revisiting search and review for work-based projects

    The search and review of literature is a vital process for many higher education studies and often, an essential part of the research process. This paper focuses on the requirements of students based in the workplace who are doing work-based projects. Practitioner Researchers (PRs) use an iterative process that looks at the context and theories in use being explored as well as utilising expertise and professionally-generated materials in their field. This approach, discussed with academic and professional team members, favours a transdisciplinary structuring of knowledge that does not privilege academic sources but also recognises the importance of innovation based in the workplace. The authors argue that as more programmes are developing resources and strategies for PRs, there is a need to accommodate a redefined boundary for the search and review of literature, knowledge and information for higher education work-based research projects

    Why highly expressed proteins evolve slowly

    Much recent work has explored molecular and population-genetic constraints on the rate of protein sequence evolution. The best predictor of evolutionary rate is expression level, for reasons which have remained unexplained. Here, we hypothesize that selection to reduce the burden of protein misfolding will favor protein sequences with increased robustness to translational missense errors. Pressure for translational robustness increases with expression level and constrains sequence evolution. Using several sequenced yeast genomes, global expression and protein abundance data, and sets of paralogs traceable to an ancient whole-genome duplication in yeast, we rule out several confounding effects and show that expression level explains roughly half the variation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein evolutionary rates. We examine causes for expression's dominant role and find that genome-wide tests favor the translational robustness explanation over existing hypotheses that invoke constraints on function or translational efficiency. Our results suggest that proteins evolve at rates largely unrelated to their functions, and can explain why highly expressed proteins evolve slowly across the tree of life.Comment: 40 pages, 3 figures, with supporting informatio
