Advanced Sensors and Applications Study (ASAS)
The present EOD requirements for sensors in the space shuttle era are reported with emphasis on those applications which were deemed important enough to warrant separate sections. The application areas developed are: (1) agriculture; (2) atmospheric corrections; (3) cartography; (4) coastal studies; (5) forestry; (6) geology; (7) hydrology; (8) land use; (9) oceanography; and (10) soil moisture. For each application area. The following aspects were covered: (1) specific goals and techniques, (2) individual sensor requirements including types, bands, resolution, etc.; (3) definition of mission requirements, type orbits, coverages, etc.; and (4) discussion of anticipated problem areas and solutions. The remote sensors required for these application areas include; (1) camera systems; (2) multispectral scanners; (3) microwave scatterometers; (4) synthetic aperture radars; (5) microwave radiometers; and (6) vidicons. The emphasis in the remote sensor area was on the evaluation of present technology implications about future systems

This piece is an abridged version of a panel discussion that was part of the symposium on Anti-Black State Violence Across the Americas: Power and Struggle in Brazil and the U.S., held at UC Berkeley on February 20â22, 2019, and organized by the LUTA Initiative, a coalition of scholars invested in facilitating international dialogue about racialized state violence across the Americas. Intense field stabilization in circular polarization: 3D time-dependent dynamics
We investigate the stabilization of a hydrogen atom in circularly polarized
laser fields. We use a time-dependent, fully three dimensional approach to
study the quantum dynamics of the hydrogen atom subject to high intensity,
short wavelength laser pulses. We find enhanced survival probability as the
field is increased under fixed envelope conditions. We also confirm wavepacket
dynamics seen in prior time-dependent computations restricted to two

Stepping Stones: A Leadership Development Program to Inspire and Promote Reflection Among Women Faculty and Staff
Women frequently benefit from focused faculty development opportunities not because they need to be âfixed,â but rather it is a means to demonstrate that success, even in chilly environments, is possible. The Stepping Stones program uses a unique design to provide participants with inspiration, time for reflection, and strategies for how to navigate one's career, through hearing about the journeys of successful women. In this article, we describe the program and evaluation results. Postâevent and longitudinal followâup surveys indicate that the program and its unique narrative format help to debunk the superwoman myth and leave participants with a sense of optimism about their future careers
Intrinsic subtypes of high-grade bladder cancer reflect the hallmarks of breast cancer biology
The identification of molecular subtype heterogeneity in breast cancer has allowed a deeper understanding of breast cancer biology. We present evidence that there are two intrinsic subtypes of high-grade bladder cancer, basal-like and luminal, which reflect the hallmarks of breast biology. Moreover, we have developed an accurate gene set predictor of molecular subtype, the BASE47, that should allow the incorporation of subtype stratification into clinical trials. Further clinical, etiologic, and therapeutic response associations will be of interest in future investigations
Demography and Life Histories of Sympatric Patas Monkeys, Erythrocebus patas, and Vervets, Cercopithecus aethiops, in Laikipia, Kenya
Mortality patterns are thought to be strong selective forces on life history traits, with high adult mortality and low immature mortality favoring early and rapid reproduction. Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) have the highest potential rates of population increase for their body size of any haplorhine primate because they reproduce both earlier and more often. We report here 10Â yr of comparative demographic data on a population of patas monkeys and a sympatric population of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), a closely related species differing in aspects of social system, ecology, and life history. The data reveal that 1) adult female patas monkeys have significantly higher mortality than adult female vervets; 2) infant mortality in patas monkeys is relatively low compared to the norm for mammals because it is not significantly different from that of adult female patas monkeys; and 3) infant mortality is significantly higher than adult female mortality in vervets. For both species, much of the mortality could be attributed to predation. An epidemic illness was also a major contributor to the mortality of adult female patas monkeys whereas chronic exposure to pathogens in a cold and damp microenvironment may have contributed to the mortality of infant vervets. Both populations experienced large fluctuations during the study period. Our results support the prediction from demographic models of life history evolution that high adult mortality relative to immature mortality selects for early maturation
