    Refractive elastic scattering of carbon and oxygen nuclei: The mean field analysis and Airy structures

    The experimental data on the 16^{16}O+12+^{12}C and 18^{18}O+12+^{12}C elastic scatterings and their optical model analysis are presented. Detailed and complete elastic angular distributions have been measured at the Strasbourg Vivitron accelerator at several energies covering the energy range between 5 and 10 MeV per nucleon. The elastic scattering angular distributions show the usual diffraction pattern and also, at larger angles, refractive effects in the form of nuclear rainbow and associated Airy structures. The optical model analysis unambiguously shows the evolution of the refractive scattering pattern. The observed structure, namely the Airy minima, can be consistently described by a nucleus-nucleus potential with a deep real part and a weakly absorptive imaginary part. The difference in absorption in the two systems is explained by an increased imaginary (mostly surface) part of the potential in the 18^{18}O+12+^{12}C system. The relation between the obtained potentials and those reported for the symmetrical 16^{16}O+16+^{16}O and 12^{12}C+12+^{12}C systems is drawn.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Phys. rev. C in pres

    Nematodos bacteriófagos como bioindicadores y como organismos asociados a los procesos de biorremediacion

    De la gran diversidad de organismos que viven en el suelo, los nematodos bacteriófagos constituyen un sujeto de estudio interesante en la búsqueda de bioindicadores adecuados para reflejar el grado de perturbación del suelo y la marcha de los procesos de recuperación. En el presente trabajo se hace una evaluación de distintas situaciones relacionadas con suelos alterados por actividades antrópicas y su relación con las poblaciones de nematodos bacteriófagos y bacterias, analizadas en laboratorio y a campo.     Radiomics of Lung Nodules: A Multi-Institutional Study of Robustness and Agreement of Quantitative Imaging Features.

    Radiomics is to provide quantitative descriptors of normal and abnormal tissues during classification and prediction tasks in radiology and oncology. Quantitative Imaging Network members are developing radiomic "feature" sets to characterize tumors, in general, the size, shape, texture, intensity, margin, and other aspects of the imaging features of nodules and lesions. Efforts are ongoing for developing an ontology to describe radiomic features for lung nodules, with the main classes consisting of size, local and global shape descriptors, margin, intensity, and texture-based features, which are based on wavelets, Laplacian of Gaussians, Law's features, gray-level co-occurrence matrices, and run-length features. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sensitivity of quantitative descriptors of pulmonary nodules to segmentations and to illustrate comparisons across different feature types and features computed by different implementations of feature extraction algorithms. We calculated the concordance correlation coefficients of the features as a measure of their stability with the underlying segmentation; 68% of the 830 features in this study had a concordance CC of ≥0.75. Pairwise correlation coefficients between pairs of features were used to uncover associations between features, particularly as measured by different participants. A graphical model approach was used to enumerate the number of uncorrelated feature groups at given thresholds of correlation. At a threshold of 0.75 and 0.95, there were 75 and 246 subgroups, respectively, providing a measure for the features' redundancy

    Application of Absorbing Boundary Condition to Nuclear Breakup Reactions

    Absorbing boundary condition approach to nuclear breakup reactions is investigated. A key ingredient of the method is an absorbing potential outside the physical area, which simulates the outgoing boundary condition for scattered waves. After discretizing the radial variables, the problem results in a linear algebraic equation with a sparse coefficient matrix, to which efficient iterative methods can be applicable. No virtual state such as discretized continuum channel needs to be introduced in the method. Basic aspects of the method are discussed by considering a nuclear two-body scattering problem described with an optical potential. We then apply the method to the breakup reactions of deuterons described in a three-body direct reaction model. Results employing the absorbing boundary condition are found to accurately coincide with those of the existing method which utilizes discretized continuum channels.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX

    Role of Fragment Higher Static Deformations in the Cold Binary Fission of 252^{252}Cf

    We study the binary cold fission of 252^{252}Cf in the frame of a cluster model where the fragments are born to their respective ground states and interact via a double-folded potential with deformation effects taken into account up to multipolarity λ=4\lambda=4. The preformation factors were neglected. In the case when the fragments are assumed to be spherical or with ground state quadrupole deformation, the QQ-value principle dictates the occurence of a narrow region around the double magic 132^{132}Sn, like in the case of cluster radioactivity. When the hexadecupole deformation is turned on, an entire mass-region of cold fission in the range 138 - 156 for the heavy fragment arise, in agreement with the experimental observations. This fact suggests that in the above mentioned mass-region, contrary to the usual cluster radioactivity where the daughter nucleus is always a neutron/proton (or both) closed shell or nearly closed shell spherical nucleus, the clusterization mechanism seems to be strongly influenced by the hexadecupole deformations rather than the QQ-value.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    Improved Nearside-Farside Decomposition of Elastic Scattering Amplitudes

    A simple technique is described, that provides improved nearside-farside (NF) decompositions of elastic scattering amplitudes. The technique, involving the resummation of a Legendre partial wave series, reduces the importance of unphysical contributions to NF subamplitudes, which can arise in more conventional NF decompositions. Applications are made to a strong absorption model and to a 16^{16}O + 12^{12}C optical potential at Elab=132E_{\text{lab}} = 132 MeV.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Evaluación morfológica y funcional de la injuria renal inducida por doxorubicína

    Doxorubicína (Adriamicina) es un antibiótico antraciclino citotóxico utilizado en la regresión de enfermedades neoplásicas diseminadas. Se une a los ácidos nucleicos, presumiblemente por una intercalación específica del núcleo antraciclino planar con el ADN de doble hélice y se caracteriza por inhibir el repliegue y la acción de las ADN polimerasas. Esta droga altera también la funcionalidad de las membranas celulares así como de las proteínas plasmáti­cas. Posee efecto citotóxico sobre células malignas, así como efectos tóxicos colaterales sobre diferentes órganos entre los que se destaca mielosupresión, cardio y nefrotoxicidad1,2. Se han desarrollado varios estudios de injuria renal inducida por Doxorubicína en modelos experimentales con el fin de elucidar su fisiopatología1,2. En general, muestran un periodo de estabilidad y luego desarrollan proteinuria, hipertensión arterial, elevación de la creatininemia. La biopsia renal evidencia glomérulos esclerosados y acumu­lación de material amorfo3,4. Estas alteraciones llevan a una disminución progresiva de la función renal5,6. La evolución hacia la fibrosis renal y la atrofia tubular son componentes inevitables de la patogénesis tubulointersticial que acom­paña a la toxicidad renal por Doxorubicína, como en la mayoría de las enfermedades renales progresivas.

    Trypanothione synthetase confers growth, survival advantage and resistance to anti-protozoal drugs in Trypanosoma cruzi

    Background: Chagas cardiomyopathy, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi infection, continues to be a neglected illness, and has a major impact on global health. The parasite undergoes several stages of morphological and biochemical changes during its life cycle, and utilizes an elaborated antioxidant network to overcome the oxidants barrier and establish infection in vector and mammalian hosts. Trypanothione synthetase (TryS) catalyzes the biosynthesis of glutathione-spermidine adduct trypanothione (T(SH)2) that is the principal intracellular thiol-redox metabolite in trypanosomatids. Methods and Results: We utilized genetic overexpression (TryShi) and pharmacological inhibition approaches to examine the role of TryS in T. cruzi proliferation, tolerance to oxidative stress and resistance to anti-protozoal drugs. Our data showed the expression and activity of TryS was increased in all morphological stages of TryShi (vs. control) parasites. In comparison to controls, the TryShi epimastigotes (insect stage) recorded shorter doubling time, and both epimastigotes and infective trypomastigotes of TryShi exhibited 36-71% higher resistance to H2O2 (50-1000 M) and heavy metal (1-500 M) toxicity. Treatment with TryS inhibitors (5-30 M) abolished the proliferation and survival advantages against H2O2 pressure in a dose-dependent manner in both TryShi and control parasites. Further, epimastigote and trypomastigote forms of TryShi (vs. control) T. cruzi tolerated higher doses of benznidazole and nifurtimox, the drugs currently administered for acute Chagas disease treatment. Conclusions: TryS is essential for proliferation and survival of T. cruzi under normal and oxidant stress conditions, and provides an advantage to the parasite to develop resistance against currently used antitrypanosomal drugs. TryS indispensability has been chemically validated with inhibitors that may be useful for drug combination therapy against Chagas disease.Fil: Mesias, Andrea Cecilia.     Total Reaction Cross Section in an Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IDQMD) Model

    The isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model is used to study the total reaction cross section σR\sigma_R. The energy-dependent Pauli volumes of neutrons and protons have been discussed and introduced into the IDQMD calculation to replace the widely used energy-independent Pauli volumes. The modified IDQMD calculation can reproduce the experimental σR\sigma_R well for both stable and exotic nuclei induced reactions. Comparisons of the calculated σR\sigma_R induced by 11Li^{11}Li with different initial density distributions have been performed. It is shown that the calculation by using the experimentally deduced density distribution with a long tail can fit the experimental excitation function better than that by using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculated density without long tails. It is also found that σR\sigma_R at high energy is sensitive to the long tail of density distribution.Comment: 4 page, 4 fig

    Barrier and internal wave contributions to the quantum probability density and flux in light heavy-ion elastic scattering

    We investigate the properties of the optical model wave function for light heavy-ion systems where absorption is incomplete, such as α+40\alpha + ^{40}Ca and α+16\alpha + ^{16}O around 30 MeV incident energy. Strong focusing effects are predicted to occur well inside the nucleus, where the probability density can reach values much higher than that of the incident wave. This focusing is shown to be correlated with the presence at back angles of a strong enhancement in the elastic cross section, the so-called ALAS (anomalous large angle scattering) phenomenon; this is substantiated by calculations of the quantum probability flux and of classical trajectories. To clarify this mechanism, we decompose the scattering wave function and the associated probability flux into their barrier and internal wave contributions within a fully quantal calculation. Finally, a calculation of the divergence of the quantum flux shows that when absorption is incomplete, the focal region gives a sizeable contribution to nonelastic processes.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures.
