    Three and four current reversals versus temperature in correlation ratchets with a simple sawtooh potential

    Transport of Brownian particles on a simple sawtooth potential subjected to both unbiased thermal and nonequilibrium symmetric three-level Markovian noise is considered. The new effects of three and four current reversals as a function of temperature are established in such correlation ratchets. The parameter space coordinates of the fixed points associated with these current reversals and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the novel current reversals are found.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; some changes introduced; accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Charm Production in DPMJET

    In this work, charm production in the {\sc dpmjet} hadronic jet simulation is compared to experimental data. Since the major application of {\sc dpmjet} is the simulation of cosmic ray-induced air showers, the version of the code integrated in the CORSIKA simulation package has been used for the comparison. Wherever necessary, adjustments have been made to improve agreement between simulation and data. With the availability of new muon/neutrino detectors that combine a large fiducial volume with large amounts of shielding, investigation of prompt muons and neutrinos from cosmic ray interactions will be feasible for the first time. Furthermore, above 100\gtrsim 100 TeV charmed particle decay becomes the dominant background for diffuse extraterrestrial neutrino flux searches. A reliable method to simulate charm production in high-energy proton-nucleon interactions is therefore required.Comment: 10 pages, to be published in JCA

    Electronic Structure of Te and As Covered Si(211)

    Electronic and atomic structures of the clean, and As and Te covered Si(211) surface are studied using pseudopotential density functional method. The clean surface is found to have (2 X 1) and rebonded (1 X 1) reconstructions as stable surface structures, but no \pi-bonded chain reconstruction. Binding energies of As and Te adatoms at a number of symmetry sites on the ideal and (2 X 1) reconstructed surfaces have been calculated because of their importance in the epitaxial growth of CdTe and other materials on the Si(211) surface. The special symmetry sites on these surfaces having the highest binding energies for isolated As and Te adatoms are identified. But more significantly, several sites are found to be nearly degenerate in binding energy values. This has important consequences for epitaxial growth processes. Optimal structures calculated for 0.5 ML of As and Te coverage reveal that the As adatoms dimerize on the surface while the Te adatoms do not. However, both As and Te covered surfaces are found to be metallic in nature.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Suspension plasma spraying of nanostructured WC-12Co coatings

    Nanostructured WC-12% Co coatings were deposited by suspension plasma spraying of submicron feedstock powders, using an internal injection plasma torch. The liquid carrier used in this approach allows for controlled injection of much finer particles than in conventional thermal spraying, leading to thin coatings with a fine surface finish.Apolyethylene-imine (PEI) dispersant was used to stabilize the colloidal suspension in an ethanol carrier. In-flight particle states were measured for a number of operating conditions of varying plasma gas flow rates, feed rates, and standoff distances and were related to the resulting microstructure, phase composition (EDS, SEM, XRD), and Vickers hardness. High in-flight particle velocities (>800 m/s) were generated, leading to dense coatings. It was observed that the coating quality was generally compromised by the high temperature and reactivity of the small particles. To compensate for this shortcoming, the suspension feed rate was adjusted, thereby varying the thermal load on the plasma. Results showed that a slightly larger agglomerate size, in conjunction with low particle jet temperatures, could somewhat limit the decomposition of WC into brittle W\u2082C/W\u2083C and amorphous cobalt containing binder phases.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

    The association of N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide with hemodynamics and functional capacity in therapy-naive precapillary pulmonary hypertension: results from a cohort study

    Background: N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is currently used as a surrogate marker for disease severity in pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, NT-proBNP tends to have a high variability and may insufficiently correlate with hemodynamics and exercise capacity. Methods: To investigate the association of NT-proBNP with hemodynamics and cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in 84 therapy-naive patients with precapillary PH. Results: NT-proBNP levels were significantly correlated with hemodynamics and CPET parameters except for cardiac index, diffusion capacity, PaO2 at peak exercise, and peak minute ventilation. NT-proBNP correlated best with hemodynamics and CPET in women and patients >65 years. NT-proBNP correlated better with CPET in pulmonary arterial hypertension compared to chronic thromboembolic PH (CTEPH). Conclusion: NT-proBNP is associated with disease severity in precapillary PH. The association might be age-and gender-dependent. NT-proBNP may insufficiently correlate with disease severity in CTEPH, possibly due to comorbidity

    Multiple current reversals in forced inhomogeneous ratchets

    Transport properties of overdamped Brownian paricles in a rocked thermal ratchet with space dependent friction coefficient is studied. By tuning the parameters, the direction of current exhibit multiple reversals, both as a function of the thermal noise strength as well as the amplitude of rocking force. Current reversals also occur under deterministic conditions and exhibits intriguing structure. All these features arise due to mutual interplay between potential asymmetry,noise, driving frequency and inhomogeneous friction.Comment: 6 figure

    A first measurement of the interaction cross section of the tau neutrino

    The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in 2000 based on four observed ντ\nu_\tau charged-current (CC) interactions. The final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this paper, based on 3.6×10173.6 \times 10^{17} protons on target using the 800 GeV Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed ντ\nu_\tau CC interactions is 9, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculated the energy-independent part of the tau-neutrino CC cross section (ν+νˉ\nu + \bar \nu), relative to the well-known νe\nu_e and νμ\nu_\mu cross sections. The ratio σ(ντ)\sigma(\nu_\tau)/σ(νe,μ)\sigma(\nu_{e,\mu}) was found to be 1.37±0.35±0.771.37\pm0.35\pm0.77. The ντ\nu_\tau CC cross section was found to be 0.72±0.24±0.36×10380.72 \pm 0.24\pm0.36 \times 10^{-38} cm2GeV1^{2}\rm{GeV}^{-1}.     SUSPENSION PLASMA SPRAYING OF INTERMEDIATE TEMPERATURE SOFC COMPONENTS USING AN AXIAL INJECTION DC TORCH

    Intermediate temperature SOFC components, such as dense, nanostructured SDC electrolytes (samarium doped ceria) and porous anode sublayers were fabricated by suspension plasma spraying using an axial feed dc plasma torch. The liquid carrier employed in this approach allowed for controlled injection of much finer particles than in conventional thermal spraying, leading to thin coatings with a refined microstructure. Dense, thin (<10(m) and non-fractured electrolytes were created. Various processing routes for SOFC half-cells, using tape-cased, plasmasprayed and suspension-sprayed anodes, were explored. Loss of integrity and non-continuous coverage of the anode constituted the principal difficulties in the subsequent electrolyte deposition. The role of suspension feedstock particle size is discussed. Amongst various schemes investigated, a processing route that employs sequential suspension plasma spraying steps for both the electrolyte and the anode, using relatively large primary particles in the feedstock, constituted the most promising approach.Peer reviewed: NoNRC publication: Ye

    EHDV-2 Infection Prevalence Varies in Culicoides sonorensis after Feeding on Infected White-Tailed Deer over the Course of Viremia

    Epizootic hemorrhagic disease viruses (EHDVs) are arboviral pathogens of white-tailed deer and other wild and domestic ruminants in North America. Transmitted by various species of Culicoides, EHDVs circulate wherever competent vectors and susceptible ruminant host populations co-exist. The impact of variation in the level and duration of EHDV viremia in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Culicoides infection prevalence is not well characterized. Here we examined how infection prevalence in a confirmed North American vector of EHDV-2 (Culicoides sonorensis) varies in response to fluctuations in deer viremia. To accomplish this, five white-tailed deer were experimentally infected with EHDV-2 and colonized C. sonorensis were allowed to feed on deer at 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24 days post infection (dpi). Viremia profiles in deer were determined by virus isolation and titration at the same time points. Blood-fed Culicoides were assayed for virus after a 10-day incubation (27 ◦C) period. We found that increases in deer EHDV blood titers significantly increased both the likelihood that midges would successfully acquire EHDV and the proportion of midges that reached the titer threshold for transmission competence. Unexpectedly, we identified four infected midge samples (three individuals and one pool) after feeding on one deer 18 and 24 dpi, when viremia was no longer detectable by virus isolation. The ability of ruminants with low-titer viremia to serve as a source of EHDV for blood-feeding Culicoides should be explored further to better understand its potential epidemiological significance
