The Fiery Furnace, Civil Disobedience, and the Civil Rights Movement: A Biblical Exegesis on Daniel 3 and Letter From Birmingham Jail

This essay was written in observance of the 50th anniversary of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s untimely assassination in April 1968. It highlights some of King’ s most important work during the American Civil Rights Movement in terms of its contemporary influence. As a focal thesis, this essay argues that King’ s famed Letter From Birmingham Jail—written during his April 1963 incarceration in Birmingham, Alabama, for deliberately refusing to follow what he morally deemed to be an “unjust law”—was predicated on the biblical foundation of civil disobedience exemplified in the famed story of Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego, the three Hebrew boys who refused to obey King Nebuchadnezzar’ s order to bow down to a deity made of gold. This essay argues that the Hebrew boys’ faith-based willingness to suffer the potentially fatal consequence for their civil disobedience instead of complying with immoral governmental dictates exemplifies the Judeo-Christian suffering servant theology that influenced King and permeated the Civil Rights Movement. King\u27s work was fueled by a suffering servant theology that regards suffering as redemptive provided it is for a moral cause. In arguing the Hebrews’ civil disobedience set a foundation for King’ s leadership in the Movement, this essay pays tribute to King’ s legacy by also connecting his example of selfless sacrifice in the form of civil disobedience in Birmingham to recent contemporary social movements, like Black Lives Matter, a successor to the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, that also seeks egalitarianism and inclusion

Analysis of some meteorological data for some selected Cities in the Eastern and Southern zone of Nigeria

The monthly mean daily global solar radiation, sunshine duration hours, maximum temperature, Cloudiness index and relative humidity data for some selected cities in the Eastern and Southern zone of Nigeria covering a period of seventeen years (1990 - 2007) were used to generate several linear and multilinear regression equations. The values of the solar radiation estimated by the equations and the measured solar radiation were tested using the mean bias error (MBE), root mean square error (RMSE) and mean percentage error (MPE) statistical techniques. The values of the correlation coefficient (R) and coefficient of correlation (R2) were also determined for each equation. The equations with the highest values of R, R2 and least values of MBE, RMSE and MPE are suitable for predicting global solar radiation in the Eastern and Southern part of Nigeria. The developed equations can be used for estimating solar radiation in other locations with similar geographical information

Cochlear Damage Affects Neurotransmitter Chemistry in the Central Auditory System

Tinnitus, the perception of a monotonous sound not actually present in the environment, affects nearly 20% of the population of the United States. Although there has been great progress in tinnitus research over the past 25 years, the neurochemical basis of tinnitus is still poorly understood. We review current research about the effects of various types of cochlear damage on the neurotransmitter chemistry in the central auditory system and document evidence that different changes in this chemistry can underlie similar behaviorally measured tinnitus symptoms. Most available data have been obtained from rodents following cochlear damage produced by cochlear ablation, loud sound, or ototoxic drugs. Effects on neurotransmitter systems have been measured as changes in neurotransmitter level, synthesis, release, uptake, and receptors. In this review, magnitudes of changes are presented for neurotransmitter-related amino acids, acetylcholine, and serotonin. A variety of effects have been found in these studies that may be related to animal model, survival time, type of cochlear damage, or methodology. The overall impression from the evidence presented is that any imbalance of neurotransmitter-related chemistry could disrupt auditory processing in such a way as to produce tinnitus

An application of Martingale convergence theorem to analyse company data

Martingale Convergence Theorem, in a slightly general form, when applied to the process of investor's fortune tells that an investor with a limited aim of enhancing her fortune k-fold will, in due course, either attain her aim or lose the entire initial investment. We verify and apply this theorem to analyse certain company data

An Investigation Of The Scientific Attitude Among Science Students In Senior Secondary Schools In Edo South Senatorial District, Edo State.

This study investigated the scientific attitude among science students in senior secondary schools. The survey research design was used to carry out the study. A sample of 250 science students from S.S.3 were randomly drawn from 10 sampled public schools. These 10 sampled public schools were randomly drawn from the public schools in two Local Government Areas from Edo south senatorial district, Edo State. The research instrument used for data collection was the Inventory of Scientific Attitudes (ISA) which was a slight modification of the one developed by Emina (1986). Two research questions and one hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The data collected were analyzed using the mean statistics and t-test of independent samples. It was revealed from the study that the level of scientific attitudes among science students in senior secondary school was average and this level of scientific attitude was not significantly influenced by sex. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that continuous experimentation and laboratory activities are urgently needed; hence the dichotomy between theory and experimentation should be stopped in the texting of science in secondary schools. The study was on the usefulness of accounting theory and practice on performance of small scale business in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to examine the usefulness of accounting theory and practice on financial performance of small scale business in Nigeria. The research was carried out, using four SSEs (Kiote Services, Multifocal Limited, Ekoconnect, Magnet Consulting associate) as the study area. Secondary Data was gotten from the company's annual reports on return on equity. Multiple regression analysis is used as a means of testing the impact of accounting theory and practices on small scale business performance in Nigeria. Findings revealed that accounting theory and practice have significant relationship with the financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria. Thus, it is recommended that SMEs should maintain proper accounting record and not just to maintain accounting records but introduction of financial management into funding activities will go a long way for judicious use of scarce fund and lay a solid ground to obtain finance either at the money or capital markets.
