Ultrasound is regarded as a potential alternative method for improving the quality of some wines. This study was initiated with the objective of evaluating the effects of ultrasound on some important physicochemical properties of red wine such as chromatic characteristics (CC), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, titratable acidity (TA), total phenolic compounds (TPCs) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity (DFRSA). The operational parameters assessed were ultrasound power, ultrasound frequency, exposure time and bath temperature. Results illustrated that there were significant changes in CC, EC and TPC while pH and TA hardly changed except for samples treated at high temperatures. DFRSA was correlated to TPC during ultrasonic treatment. Application of principal component analysis to the experimental data suggested that exposure time was the factor with the greatest ability to induce changes on wine. Results suggested that ultrasound may be applied to improve some physicochemical properties of red wine. National Natural Science Foundation of China [No. 31101324]Natural Science Foundation of Shaanxi Province, China [No. 2015JM3097]Technology Transfer Promotion Project of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China [No.CXY1434(5)]Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China [Nos. Unravelling institutional work patterns:Planning offshore wind farms in contested space

    Get PDF
Offshore wind farms (OWF) are considered important for a timely energy transition. However, offshore space is governed by sector-specific institutional frameworks representing various and sometimes conflicting interests. Therefore, institutional change towards improved cooperation and coordination between various stakeholders, their interests and alternative institutional frameworks is necessary. Institutional work is used as an analytical lens to explore patterns resulting from the interplay between different forms of institutional work by actors over time. Data was collected through participatory observation of the Dutch North Sea Dialogues (NSD) and focused on balancing interest in the context of multi-use of OFW. Institutional change in this case relied mostly on a highly subtle interplay between forms of creating and maintaining work that result in incremental changes to existing practices. Sustainability transitions could benefit from institutional harmonization as a pathway to institutional change for improved cross-sectoral coordination and cooperation

It was recently shown that in essentially nonequilibrium systems, the diffusion coefficient can behave nonmonotonically with temperature. One example of such systems with anomalous temperature dependence is the motion of Brownian particles in spatially periodic structures. The aim of the article was to study the change in the temperature dependence of diffusion in underdamped systems with a low coefficient of friction. In this paper, computer simulation methods are used to study the change in the diffusion coefficient of particles in a wide range of temperatures in oblique spatially periodic potentials for different values of the friction coefficient. It is shown that diffusion reaches a maximum at a certain external force. Its value depends on the coefficient of friction. It is shown that, in contrast to the usual Arrhenius dependence, in the case of an inclined periodic potential, the maximum diffusion coefficient increases while temperature is decreasing exponentially. It is established that such a dependence is common to all underdamped systems. It is shown that for spatially periodic structures there is a limited portion of forces in which an increase in the diffusion coefficient while decreasing temperature is observed. This is the area of the so-called temperature-anomalous diffusion (TAD). The width and position of the TAD region are determined depending on the friction coefficient γ and the system parameters. It has been shown that a decrease in γ, width TAD region decreases proportionally γ. In this case, the diffusion coefficient in the TAD region, on the contrary, increases ~γ. The data obtained on the temperature and the anomalous diffusion are important for various fields of physics and engineering, and opens new prospects for a diffusion process control technology

Neel Temperature for Quasi-Two-Dimensional Dipolar Antiferromagnets

We calculate the N\'eel temperature TNT_N for two-dimensional isotropic dipolar Heisenberg antiferromagnets via linear spin-wave theory and a high temperature expansion, employing the method of Callen. The theoretical predictions for TNT_N for K2_2MnF4_4, Rb2_2MnF4_4, Rb2_2MnCl4_4 and (CH3_3NH3_3)2_2MnCl4_4 are in good agreement with the measured values.Comment: 12 pages, REVTEX, TUM-CP-93-0

RELEASE: A High-level Paradigm for Reliable Large-scale Server Software

    Get PDF
Erlang is a functional language with a much-emulated model for building reliable distributed systems. This paper outlines the RELEASE project, and describes the progress in the first six months. The project aim is to scale the Erlang’s radical concurrency-oriented programming paradigm to build reliable general-purpose software, such as server-based systems, on massively parallel machines. Currently Erlang has inherently scalable computation and reliability models, but in practice scalability is constrained by aspects of the language and virtual machine. We are working at three levels to address these challenges: evolving the Erlang virtual machine so that it can work effectively on large scale multicore systems; evolving the language to Scalable Distributed (SD) Erlang; developing a scalable Erlang infrastructure to integrate multiple, heterogeneous clusters. We are also developing state of the art tools that allow programmers to understand the behaviour of massively parallel SD Erlang programs. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the RELEASE approach using demonstrators and two large case studies on a Blue Gene

Mid-term clinical results of chronic cavitary long bone osteomyelitis treatment using S53P4 bioactive glass:A multi-center study

    Get PDF
Introduction: Chronic osteomyelitis is a challenging condition in the orthopedic practice and traditionally treated using local and systemic antibiotics in a two-stage surgical procedure. With the introduction of the antimicrobial biomaterial S53P4 bioactive glass (Bonalive®), chronic osteomyelitis can be treated in a one-stage procedure. This study evaluated the mid-term clinical results of patients treated with S53P4 bioactive glass for long bone chronic osteomyelitis. Methods: In this prospective multi-center study, patients from two different university medical centers in the Netherlands were included. One-stage treatment consisted of debridement surgery, implantation of S53P4 bioactive glass, and treatment with culture-based systemic antibiotics. If required, wound closure by a plastic surgeon was performed. The primary outcome was the eradication of infection, and a secondary statistical analysis was performed on probable risk factors for treatment failure. Results: In total, 78 patients with chronic cavitary long bone osteomyelitis were included. Follow-up was at least 12 months (mean 46; standard deviation, SD, 20), and 69 patients were treated in a one-stage procedure. Overall infection eradication was 85 %, and 1-year infection-free survival was 89 %. Primary closure versus local/muscular flap coverage is the only risk factor for treatment failure. Conclusion: With 85 % eradication of infection, S53P4 bioactive glass is an effective biomaterial in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis in a one-stage procedure. A major risk factor for treatment failure is the necessity for local/free muscle flap coverage. These results confirm earlier published data, and together with the fundamentally different antimicrobial pathways without antibiotic resistance, S53P4 bioactive glass is a recommendable biomaterial for chronic osteomyelitis treatment and might be beneficial over other biomaterials.</p

EIA decision-making and administrative justice:An empirical analysis

    Get PDF
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is implemented in most countries as an administrative procedure. In this context, it is subject to the principles of administrative justice. However, to date, no empirical research has been conducted to determine the extent to which EIA decisions comply with the principles of administrative justice. In this paper, empirical data from 42 EIA cases in South Africa are used to establish EIA compliance with the administrative justice principles of lawfulness, procedural fairness and reasonableness. This is achieved by measuring EIA decisions against specially developed key performance indicators (KPIs). Overall, decisions were found to mostly comply with the principles of administrative justice. However, questions arise with regards to the quality and substance of the information feeding into the decision-making process and on which decisions are ultimately based

Evaluation of a Pilot Intervention to Relink Formerly Incarcerated PLHWHAs to HIV/AIDS Care

HIV is a manageable chronic disease. However, it requires knowing one’s status, retention in care, and medication adherence for viral suppression. Disadvantaged groups of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) who experience incarceration and major depressive disorders, homelessness, substance use and lack of social support are overwhelmed by these burdens and do not fully engage in HIV care, without help. Four Northeast Florida entities engaged in action research to influence health equity for formerly detained PLWHAs. The City of Jacksonville, Ryan White Part-A Program, Florida Department of Health-Duval, Lutheran Social Services, and Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office convened a coalition, called CAPRICE. Activities focused on intensive medical case management, linkage to core HIV services, job placement, and up to 90-days of transition housing to support the transition from jail to community. The coalition created system level relationships, with structure and processes. Next steps should focus on how to support the infrastructure for disadvantaged groups over the long-term. Estimated sustainable cost compared reasonably with published research. The local HIV Health Services Planning Council and CAPRICE members have the task of garnering financial support for this work, which aims to plug one of the leaks in the local HIV Continuum of Care

    AC-KBO Revisited

    Get PDF
Equational theories that contain axioms expressing associativity and commutativity (AC) of certain operators are ubiquitous. Theorem proving methods in such theories rely on well-founded orders that are compatible with the AC axioms. In this paper we consider various definitions of AC-compatible Knuth-Bendix orders. The orders of Steinbach and of Korovin and Voronkov are revisited. The former is enhanced to a more powerful version, and we modify the latter to amend its lack of monotonicity on non-ground terms. We further present new complexity results. An extension reflecting the recent proposal of subterm coefficients in standard Knuth-Bendix orders is also given. The various orders are compared on problems in termination and completion.Comment: 31 pages, To appear in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP) special issue for the 12th International Symposium on Functional and Logic Programming (FLOPS 2014
