    Propulsion Study for Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT)

    Propulsion requirements were determined for 0.5 and 0.7 Mach aircraft. Sensitivity studies were conducted on both these aircraft to determine parametrically the influence of propulsion characteristics on aircraft size and direct operating cost (DOC). Candidate technology elements and design features were identified and parametric studies conducted to select the STAT advanced engine cycle. Trade off studies were conducted to determine those advanced technologies and design features that would offer a reduction in DOC for operation of the STAT engines. These features were incorporated in the two STAT engines. A benefit assessment was conducted comparing the STAT engines to current technology engines of the same power and to 1985 derivatives of the current technology engines. Research and development programs were recommended as part of an overall technology development plan to ensure that full commercial development of the STAT engines could be initiated in 1988

    A primary purpose of counselor education is the development of competency in diagnosis, case conceptualization, treatment formulation, and intervention. This paper describes a series of experiential case-based workshops designed to directly target and enhance students’ understanding of these specific clinical mental health counseling competencies in order to promote student involvement in constructivist learning, develop students’ cognitive complexity, and elucidate the thinking of an experienced clinician. This paper provides an overview of the workshop design and implementation, discussion of workshop efficacy with examples, and suggestions for curricular implementation

    Study of an advanced General Aviation Turbine Engine (GATE)

    The best technology program for a small, economically viable gas turbine engine applicable to the general aviation helicopter and aircraft market for 1985-1990 was studied. Turboshaft and turboprop engines in the 112 to 746 kW (150 to 1000 hp) range and turbofan engines up to 6672 N (1500 lbf) thrust were considered. A good market for new turbine engines was predicted for 1988 providing aircraft are designed to capitalize on the advantages of the turbine engine. Parametric engine families were defined in terms of design and off-design performance, mass, and cost. These were evaluated in aircraft design missions selected to represent important market segments for fixed and rotary-wing applications. Payoff parameters influenced by engine cycle and configuration changes were aircraft gross mass, acquisition cost, total cost of ownership, and cash flow. Significant advantage over a current technology, small gas turbine engines was found especially in cost of ownership and fuel economy for airframes incorporating an air-cooled high-pressure ratio engine. A power class of 373 kW (500 hp) was recommended as the next frontier for technology advance where large improvements in fuel economy and engine mass appear possible through component research and development

    Evidence from human studies suggests that angiogenesis commences during the pre-malignant stages of cancer. Inhibiting angiogenesis may, therefore, be of potential value in preventing progression to invasive cancer. Understanding the mechanisms inducing angiogenesis in these lesions and identification of those important in human tumourigenesis are necessary to develop translational strategies that will help realise the goal of angioprevention

    Temperature dependence of the triplet diffusion and quenching rates in films of an Ir(ppy)(3)-cored dendrimer

    We study photoluminescence and triplet-triplet exciton annihilation in a neat film of a fac-tris(2-phenylpyridyl)iridium(III) [Ir(ppy)(3)]-cored dendrimer and in its blend with a 4,4(')-bis(N-carbazolyl)biphenyl host for the temperature range of 77-300 K. The nearest neighbor hopping rate of triplet excitons is found to increase by a factor of 2 with temperature between 150 and 300 K and is temperature independent at lower temperature. The intermolecular quenching rate follows the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 7 meV, which can be explained by stronger dipole-dipole interactions with the donor molecule in the higher triplet substate. The results indicate that energy disorder has no significant effect on triplet transport and quenching in these materials

    Hilbert-Post completeness for the state and the exception effects

    In this paper, we present a novel framework for studying the syntactic completeness of computational effects and we apply it to the exception effect. When applied to the states effect, our framework can be seen as a generalization of Pretnar's work on this subject. We first introduce a relative notion of Hilbert-Post completeness, well-suited to the composition of effects.     On coalgebras with internal moves

    In the first part of the paper we recall the coalgebraic approach to handling the so-called invisible transitions that appear in different state-based systems semantics. We claim that these transitions are always part of the unit of a certain monad. Hence, coalgebras with internal moves are exactly coalgebras over a monadic type. The rest of the paper is devoted to supporting our claim by studying two important behavioural equivalences for state-based systems with internal moves, namely: weak bisimulation and trace semantics. We continue our research on weak bisimulations for coalgebras over order enriched monads. The key notions used in this paper and proposed by us in our previous work are the notions of an order saturation monad and a saturator. A saturator operator can be intuitively understood as a reflexive, transitive closure operator. There are two approaches towards defining saturators for coalgebras with internal moves. Here, we give necessary conditions for them to yield the same notion of weak bisimulation. Finally, we propose a definition of trace semantics for coalgebras with silent moves via a uniform fixed point operator.     Triplet exciton diffusion and phosphorescence quenching in Iridium(III)-Centered dendrimers

    A study of triplet-triplet exciton annihilation and nonradiative decay in films of iridium(III)-centered phosphorescent dendrimers is reported. The average separation of the chromophore was tuned by the molecular structure and also by blending with a host material. It was found that triplet exciton hopping is controlled by electron exchange interactions and can be over 600 times faster than phosphorescence quenching. Nonradiative decay occurs by weak dipole-dipole interactions and is independent of exciton diffusion, except in very thin films

    Use of diagnosis codes for detection of clinically significant opioid poisoning in the emergency department: A retrospective analysis of a surveillance case definition

    Abstract Background Although fatal opioid poisonings tripled from 1999 to 2008, data describing nonfatal poisonings are rare. Public health authorities are in need of tools to track opioid poisonings in near real time. Methods We determined the utility of ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes for identifying clinically significant opioid poisonings in a state-wide emergency department (ED) surveillance system. We sampled visits from four hospitals from July 2009 to June 2012 with diagnosis codes of 965.00, 965.01, 965.02 and 965.09 (poisoning by opiates and related narcotics) and/or an external cause of injury code of E850.0-E850.2 (accidental poisoning by opiates and related narcotics), and developed a novel case definition to determine in which cases opioid poisoning prompted the ED visit. We calculated the percentage of visits coded for opioid poisoning that were clinically significant and compared it to the percentage of visits coded for poisoning by non-opioid agents in which there was actually poisoning by an opioid agent. We created a multivariate regression model to determine if other collected triage data can improve the positive predictive value of diagnosis codes alone for detecting clinically significant opioid poisoning. Results 70.1 % of visits (Standard Error 2.4 %) coded for opioid poisoning were primarily prompted by opioid poisoning. The remainder of visits represented opioid exposure in the setting of other primary diseases. Among non-opioid poisoning codes reviewed, up to 36 % were reclassified as an opioid poisoning. In multivariate analysis, only naloxone use improved the positive predictive value of ICD-9-CM codes for identifying clinically significant opioid poisoning, but was associated with a high false negative rate. Conclusions This surveillance mechanism identifies many clinically significant opioid overdoses with a high positive predictive value. With further validation, it may help target control measures such as prescriber education and pharmacy monitoring

    Domain perturbation for parabolic equations

    Doctor of PhilosophyWe study the effect of domain perturbation on the behaviour of parabolic equations. The first aspect considered in this thesis is the behaviour of solutions under changes of the domain. We show how solutions of linear and semilinear parabolic equations behave as a sequence of domains Ωn\Omega_n converges to an open set Ω\Omega in a certain sense. In particular, we are interested in singular domain perturbations so that a change of variables is not possible on these domains. For autonomous linear equations, it is known that convergence of solutions under domain perturbation is closely related to the corresponding elliptic equations via a standard semigroup theory. We show that there is also a relation between domain perturbation for non-autonomous linear parabolic equations and domain perturbation for elliptic equations. The key result for this is the equivalence of Mosco convergences between various closed and convex subsets of Banach spaces. An important consequence is that the same conditions for a sequence of domains imply convergence of solutions under domain perturbation for both parabolic and elliptic equations. By applying variational methods, we obtain the convergence of solutions of initial value problems under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. A similar technique can be applied to obtain the convergence of weak solutions of parabolic variational inequalities when the underlying convex set is perturbed. Using the linear theory, we then study domain perturbation for initial boundary value problems of semilinear type. We are also interested in the behaviour of bounded entire solutions of parabolic equations defined on the whole real line. We establish a convergence result for bounded entire solutions of linear parabolic equations under L2L^2 and LpL^p-norms. For the LpL^p-theory, we also prove H\"{o}lder regularity of bounded entire solutions with respect to time. In addition, the persistence of some classes of bounded entire solutions is given for semilinear equations using the Leray-Schauder degree theory. The second aspect is to study the dynamics of parabolic equations under domain perturbation. In this part, we consider parabolic equation as a dynamical system in an L2L^2 space and study the stability of invariant manifolds near a stationary solution. In particular, we prove the continuity (upper and lower semicontinuity) of both, the local stable invariant manifolds and the local unstable invariant manifolds under domain perturbation
