WHAT CAN BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION BRING TO TRANSPORT SERVICE OPERATIONS IN A CONTEXT OF INCREASING LIBERALIZATION

[EN] Transport services continue to be liberalized across the entire European Union, although at differing speeds in each Member State. This momentum is expected to continue in the coming years. Against this background, attention to new dimensions of transport services becomes imperative. The focus, which has so far centred on managing infrastructure, must now shift to lesser explored areas, like product innovation and customer relationship management. The efficiency and competitiveness of new private operators will depend to a large extent on achieving a balanced development of the three aforementioned areas, as well as paying particular attention to their inherent logic, in order to build a strong value proposition. Business model innovation emerged in the field of strategic management yet goes beyond the traditional framework of competition 'for the market' and 'in the market', opening a wider and more promising space, i.e. the market creation framework. The goal is no longer to discover and exploit opportunities, but to create new opportunities and generate new market spaces.Mateu Céspedes, JM. (2016). We draw on the insights of stakeholder theory to explore the extent to which environmental management practices are driven by (i) an attempt to enhance a firm’s legitimacy, and (ii) a response to pressures arising from powerful stakeholders. The material for this investigation has been gathered from a sample of 279 Spanish hotels. The hotel industry which is only marginally affected by environmental regulation and is thus a widely neglected setting in this context, could be a particularly interesting subject for investigation, able to throw some light on the extent to which firms produce different responses to the environmental concerns of their stakeholders. Our results reveal that corporate environmental management practices may be a response to genuine environmental concerns, and we then speak of explicit environmental management, or there may also be reasons different from the environmental, in which case we speak of tacit environmental management. Our findings suggest that explicit and tacit environmental management account for a variety of organizational responses to the environmental demands of stakeholders, depending on (i) the stakeholders’ power regarding environmental issues, (ii) the stakeholders’ use of power to protect the environment, and (iii) the perceived economic advantages of environmental management activities.Publicad

Teachers often must analyse and select the educational resources they consider relevant for their students. Since textbooks are an important tool for instructional design, the teacher must be able to analyse their suitability, identify limitations and make adaptations to overcome them. Objectives: This paper describes the design, implementation, and results of a training action with prospective primary education teachers, aimed at the development of competence for the analysis, identification of conflicts and proposals for the management of textbook lessons, particularly the content of proportionality. Design: The research is interpretative and exploratory, using content analysis to examine the participants' response protocols. Setting and Participants: The experience was carried out in the framework of the Primary Education grade; the sample consisted of 48 students. Data collection and analysis: Data were collected by observer/researcher annotations and participants’ responses to the proposed assessment task. Results: The results show that trainee teachers make progress in identifying conflicts and make suggestions for improvement to increase didactic suitability in the different facets, but that they are not specific enough when describing effective conflict resolution proposals, especially in the epistemic and cognitive facets. Conclusions: For future teachers to become more proficient in the mode of use, it is necessary to reinforce their didactical-mathematical knowledge of proportionality. Measuring Onward Connectivity with a Prescriptive Approach

[EN] Although connectivity has been the focus of several topics in the research field, onward connectivity has received less attention, despite that it can shed light on various issues in the context of a mature air transport market and an increasingly dense airport network. We propose several ways to measure onward connectivity, some of which are based on the connectivity literature whilst others are suggested in the light of a qualitative study on the needs and wants of a particular customer segment in the case study of Castellon airport, Spain. We apply our measures to this case to determine the best hub to connect to for this segment and provide the connection that maximizes onward connectivity. We find that ¿demand catered for,¿ an onward connectivity measure that balances the number of destinations with the interest of the potential customers, is a good tool to choose the best hub. We also propose the adjustment of a measure based on connectivity literature (the global connectivity index) which delivers a more precise approach to choosing the best time of the day to connect to the hub. Our work opens new venues for studying connectivity from a perspective based on market demand as well as using onward connectivity for prescriptive applications and is potentially useful for almost one in two airports (particularly new and small ones), as well as for other actors in the commercial aviation industry.Mateu Céspedes, JM.; Pinana, E. Building a guide to analyse mathematics textbooks based on the didactical suitability theory

A textbook lesson can be considered as a potential or planned instructional process proposed by the author’s book, which can help the teacher to design and implement an effective instructional process. This permits the application of didactical analysis tools of the onto-semiotic approach to mathematical knowledge and instruction in order to assess the didactical suitability of the instructional process, identify possible conflicts of meaning and potential improvements. In this article, we describe the process of developing a Mathematics Textbook Lesson Analysis Guide using the didactical suitability theory and its operational breakdown into components, subcomponents and indicators. The formulation of the suitability criteria, as rules that permit to guide an informed assessment of the suitability of a teaching and learning process, has led us to carry out a content analysis of the key research on textbook analysis and the consensus adopted in the research community regarding the suitability criteria. Assuming that a mathematics teacher has decided to use a textbook lesson as a resource to help the teaching and learning process of some mathematical content, the analysis guide is presented as a tool that allows the teacher to assess the didactical suitability and facilitate the making of informed decisions about the lesson use in the classroom.

Rank aggregation methods dealing with incomplete information applied to smart cities

    Get PDF
City-rankings have become a central instrument for assessing the attractiveness of urban regions over the last years. Demographic, environmental, economic, political and socio-cultural factors are forcing the urban world to design and implement Smart Cities. A set of multidimensional components underlies the fuzzy smart city concept. As a result cities are evaluated and ranked with regard to different characteristics, and smart city measures are achieved through chosen indicators. Therefore, the problem of combining multiple rankings to form an aggregate ranking, which compares city performance, is recognized as a useful tool in this context. Moreover, a usual situation is when incomplete information arises and only partial rankings may be supplied. This paper addresses the general problem of rank aggregation dealing with incomplete information based on rank aggregation methods and multicriteria decision making theory. It consists on constructing a consensus ranking from partial rankings of a set of objects provided according different criteria. Our techniques rely on outranking matrices as a way of collecting relevance information from input data, theory of fuzzy preference relations and the PageRank algorithm

Is experience a useful resource for business model innovation?

[EN] Business model innovation has been proposed as a powerful strategic tool, able to offer competitive advantage, create markets and even reshape industries. Despite these powerful effects, little research has been conducted into studying and improving business model generation methods, and even less study has gone into analysing how to define new business models that can exert a disruptive effect on markets and industries. Our work tries to fill this gap, analysing whether experience encourages or discourages the generation of disruptive business models. An empirical analysis was carried out using an experimental methodology. The results seem to contradict the currently dominant Resource-Based View, but can be explained by the theory on inertia in organisations.Mateu Céspedes, JM.; March-Chorda, I. (2016). Is experience a useful resource for business model innovation?. Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. 28(10):1195-1209. doi:10.1080/09537325.2016.1182630S11951209281

Searching for better business models assessment methods

[EN] Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a more useful business models assessment method than the traditional intuitive one. The paper also compares both methods, in order to display what does the intuitive assessment method really assess. Design/methodology/approach An experimental approach allows the authors to generate a set of business models, in order to assess them and to compare alternative assessment methods in a quantitative manner. Findings The work proposes a scale for ex ante business models assessment consisting on eight indicators. This provides an ex ante assessment that takes into consideration a wider range of factors than the traditional intuitive assessment. The comparison between both methods shows which factors are intuitively taken into account and which are not. Research limitations/implications The research contributes to expand the business model creation framework. Practical implications A more accurate assessment will show the most promising business models that will result in higher chances of success of new business ventures. Social implications As companies and entrepreneurs hardly have the possibility to implement more than one business model, to choose the best option becomes essential. This selection could mark the threshold between success and failure, and between wealth creation and destruction. Originality/value Little research has been conducted in a field that might be really fruitful, the field of business model ex ante assessment. The work faces the challenge using an experimental methodology that allows to broaden the range of situations to study.Mateu Céspedes, JM.; March Chordà, I. (2016).
