Collective memory and autobiographical memory: Perspectives from the humanities and cognitive sciences
The current overview provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of autobiographical and collective memory studies, focusing on history and cognitive psychology, to help other scholars bridge the disciplinary gap. We describe the various interpretative frameworks used to build theoretical knowledge on how autobiographical memory and collective memory are intertwined. We expose how research exploring self, social and directive functions of autobiographical memory echoes three main functions that can be identified for collective memory, that is, social identity, social schemata, and means for actions, or a political decision tool of research in these fields. In doing so, we hope to stimulate opportunities for more interdisciplinary research. This article is categorized under: Psychology > Memory Psychology > Theory and Method

La mémoire à l'épreuve de l'interdisciplinarité. Sciences humaines et cognitives
International audienceIn order to build a common language on memory, thirteen authors - historians, philosophers, cognitive psychologists, anthropologists, linguists and literary scholars - cross their theoretical approaches and their corpus, in a constant concern for interdisciplinarity. This undertaking is part of the work of the CNRS Memory research group created in January 2018 under the dual supervision of the INSB (Institute of Biological Sciences) and the INSHS (Institute of Human and Social Sciences) in order to bring together memory specialists from animals to humans. This book focuses on the human memory side of the spectrum. Bringing together choral studies (for example, between history and cognitive psychology), epistemological reflections on the categories of memory analysis (that of "collective memory", among others) and interdisciplinary experiments on corpora (from Italian Renaissance family books through the prism of neuroscience to female correspondences in post CeauÈescu Romania, via the memory arts of a humanist doctor from Lyon, the creation of a written memory among Provençal noblewomen after the Revocation of the Ädit of Nantes, the research of AbbĂ© SieyĂšs on the link between memory and knowledge, or the memory work of the writer Paul Auster), the book is interested in what the 'sciences of memory' can be, at the intersection of the social and the cognitive. Are feeling-of-knowing and judgment-of-learning different? Evidence from older adults
International audienceThis study aims to assess age differences between Judgments-of-learning (JOLs) and Feeling-of-knowing (FOKs) as they are typically studied. The novel contribution of the present study is a comparison between these two metacognitive judgments in a within subject design. Young and older adults were tested on their JOL accuracy and were asked to predict future recall during learning. All participants were also asked to predict future recognition of unrecalled items (FOK judgments). Results showed that although older adults had similar low levels of memory performance in the JOL task and in the FOK task, metacognitive impairments were only found on the resolution of FOKs. Furthermore, an analysis of covariance showed that age differences on memory performance explained the age effect observed on the FOK, thus supporting the memory constraint hypothesis (Hertzog et al., 2010). Results are discussed in relation to contemporary models of memory
