TMCalc - A fast code to derive Teff and [Fe/H] for FGK stars

We present a new direct spectroscopic calibration for a fast estimation of the stellar metallicity [Fe/H]. These calibrations were computed using a large sample of 451 solar-type stars for which we have precise spectroscopic parameters derived from high quality spectra. The new [Fe/H] calibration is based on weak Fe I lines, which are expected to be less dependent on surface gravity and microturbulence, and require only a pre-determination of the effective temperature. This temperature can be obtained using a previously presented line-ratio calibration. We also present a simple code that uses the calibrations and procedures presented in these works to obtain both the effective temperature and the [Fe/H] estimate. The code, written in C, is freely available for the community and may be used as an extension of the ARES code. We test these calibrations for 582 independent FGK stars. We show that the code can be used as a precise and fast indicator of the spectroscopic temperature and metallicity for dwarf FKG stars with effective temperatures ranging from 4500 K to 6500 K and with [Fe/H] ranging from -0.8 dex to 0.4 dex.Comment: 10 pages, 8 Figures, published in A&

A photometric and spectroscopic study of NSVS 14256825: the second sdOB+dM eclipsing binary

We present an analysis of UBVRC_{\rm C}IC_{\rm C}JH photometry and phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of NSVS 14256825, an HW Vir type binary. The members of this class consist of a hot subdwarf and a main-sequence low-mass star in a close orbit (Porb 0.1P_{\rm orb} ~ 0.1 d). Using the primary-eclipse timings, we refine the ephemeris for the system, which has an orbital period of 0.11037 d. From the spectroscopic data analysis, we derive the effective temperature, T1=40000±500T_1 = 40000 \pm 500 K, the surface gravity, logg1=5.50±0.05\log g_1 = 5.50\pm0.05, and the helium abundance, n(He)/n(H)=0.003±0.001n(\rm He)/n(\rm H)=0.003\pm0.001, for the hot component. Simultaneously modelling the photometric and spectroscopic data using the Wilson-Devinney code, we obtain the geometrical and physical parameters of NSVS 14256825. Using the fitted orbital inclination and mass ratio (i = 82\fdg5\pm0\fdg3 and q=M2/M1=0.260±0.012q = M_2/M_1 = 0.260\pm0.012, respectively), the components of the system have M1=0.419±0.070MM_1 = 0.419 \pm 0.070 M_{\odot}, R1=0.188±0.010RR_1 = 0.188 \pm 0.010 R_{\odot}, M2=0.109±0.023MM_2 = 0.109 \pm 0.023 M_{\odot}, and R2=0.162±0.008RR_2 = 0.162 \pm 0.008 R_{\odot}. From its spectral characteristics, the hot star is classified as an sdOB star.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

The quest for companions to post-common envelope binaries: I. Searching a sample of stars from the CSS and SDSS

As part of an ongoing collaboration between student groups at high schools and professional astronomers, we have searched for the presence of circum-binary planets in a bona-fide unbiased sample of twelve post-common envelope binaries (PCEBs) from the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Although the present ephemerides are significantly more accurate than previous ones, we find no clear evidence for orbital period variations between 2005 and 2011 or during the 2011 observing season. The sparse long-term coverage still permits O-C variations with a period of years and an amplitude of tens of seconds, as found in other systems. Our observations provide the basis for future inferences about the frequency with which planet-sized or brown-dwarf companions have either formed in these evolved systems or survived the common envelope (CE) phase.Comment: accepted by A&

Dynamics of Collapse of flexible Polyelectrolytes and Polyampholytes

We provide a theory for the dynamics of collapse of strongly charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) and flexible polyampholytes (PAs) using Langevin equation. After the initial stage, in which counterions condense onto PE, the mechanism of approach to the globular state is similar for PE and PA. In both instances, metastable pearl-necklace structures form in characteristic time scale that is proportional to N^{4/5} where N is the number of monomers. The late stage of collapse occurs by merger of clusters with the largest one growing at the expense of smaller ones (Lifshitz- Slyozov mechanism). The time scale for this process T_{COLL} N. Simulations are used to support the proposed collapse mechanism for PA and PE.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

Early Delirium Assessment for Hospitalized Older People in Indonesia: a Systematic Review

Background: Due to the increasing risk of getting co-morbidity and frailty, older people tend to be prone to hospitalization. Hospitalization in older people brings many adverse effects. Moreover, when these elderly get delirium, the mortality and morbidity will increase. The risk of getting deterioration and worsening condition because of delirium would also increase. In fact, delirium assessment is not a high priority in taking care older people during hospitalization because the focus of care is treating the disease.Delirium screening as an early recognition of delirium in the hospitalized elderly inIndonesia remains unreported and even do not well evaluated. Therefore, delirium as a preventable problem or causing problems remains unrecognized.Purpose: This paper aims to review the current evidence of early assessment of delirium in hospitalized older people. Methods: A systematic review was conducted from four databases yielding to 4 articles which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: There are four focuses on the result, namely delirium screening tools, patient characteristics, identified early delirium assessment, and outcomes affected by early delirium assessment. Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) was used as the delirium screening tool in the hospital. Establishing the care team involving many disciplines will give a better way to improve the integrated care and collaborative care. Conclusion: Performing CAM integrated into comprehensive geriatric assessment can be the most important thing to be undertaken when looking after the hospitalized elderly
