    Wasting Away: De(Composing) Trash in the Contemporary Brazilian Documentary

    This essay examines the metaphor of garbage in contemporary Brazilian documentary to problematize issues of race, class, and gender, focusing, especially, on Marcos Prado’s feature-length “Estamira” (116 mins., 2004).  Utilizing the postmodern decomposition of antropofagia (coprofagia), theorized by Brazilian poet and cultural critic Glauco Mattoso, as well as considerations of recent feminist thought, this essay will examine how the motif of lixo in recent Brazilian film serves to critique contemporary Brazilian social and economic policies by revealing a society that dis - covers itself—and, ironically, its own value and values—through the garbage it produces

    Effect of the addition of different waste carbonaceous materials on coal gasification in CO2 atmosphere

    YesIn order to evaluate the feasibility of using CO2 as a gasifying agent in the conversion of carbonaceous materials to syngas, gasification characteristics of coal, a suite of waste carbonaceous materials, and their blends were studied by using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). The results showed that CO2 gasification of polystyrene completed at 470 °C, which was lower than those of other carbonaceous materials. This behaviour was attributed to the high volatile content coupled with its unique thermal degradation properties. It was found that the initial decomposition temperature of blends decreased with the increasing amount of waste carbonaceous materials in the blends. In this study, results demonstrated that CO2 co-gasification process was enhanced as a direct consequence of interactions between coal and carbonaceous materials in the blends. The intensity and temperature of occurrence of these interactions were influenced by the chemical properties and composition of the carbonaceous materials in the blends. The strongest interactions were observed in coal/polystyrene blend at the devolatilisation stage as indicated by the highest value of Root Mean Square Interaction Index (RMSII), which was due to the highly reactive nature of polystyrene. On the other hand, coal/oat straw blend showed the highest interactions at char gasification stage. The catalytic effect of alkali metals and other minerals in oat straw, such as CaO, K2O, and Fe2O3, contributed to these strong interactions. The overall CO2 gasification of coal was enhanced via the addition of polystyrene and oat straw

    The influence of fictional narrative experience on work outcomes:a conceptual analysis and research model

    Fictional narrative experience is assumed to have a profound impact on human behavior, but the possible outcomes and the processes through which fictional narrative experience influence behaviors have rarely been studied. This paper introduces a model of the consequences of fictional narrative experience through transportation and transformation processes. We discuss a framework for understanding the effects of fictional narrative experience, distinguishing affective and behavioral effects, and temporality of effects (short-term or persistent). Exemplary outcomes of fictional narrative experience are presented, including recovery, creativity and interpersonal behavior. Finally, we propose that the effects of fictional narrative experience are dependent upon a person’s frame of reference, as well the extent to which a reader can identify with the main characters, the perceived usefulness of a narrative, and degree of verisimilitude in the narrative

    Ion irradiation effects in nonmetals: formation of nanocrystals and novel microstructures

    Ion implantation is a versatile and powerful technique for producing nanocrystal precipitates embedded in the near-surface region of materials. Radiation effects that occur during the implantation process can lead to complex microstructures and particle size distributions, and in the present work, we focus on the application of these effects to produce novel microstructural properties for insulating or semiconducting nanocrystals formed in optical host materials. Nanocrystal precipitates can be produced in two ways: by irradiation of pure ( i.e. , non-implanted) crystalline or amorphous materials, or by ion implantation followed by either thermal annealing or subsequent additional irradiation. Different methods for the formation of novel structural relationships between embedded nanocrystals and their hosts have been developed, and the results presented here demonstrate the general flexibility of ion implantation and irradiation techniques for producing unique near-surface nanocomposite microstructures in irradiated host materials.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42336/1/10019-3-4-190_00030190.pd
