Heidegger's account of truth as "aletheia"

    No full text
The philosophical genius nowadays widely acknowledged. of both Kierkegaard and Nietzsche is Central to the originality of both thinkers is their relentless critique of the received traditional conception of truth and reason, a critique reflected in not only the content but also the authorial style which they employed. It is the contention of this thesis that following in their footsteps, Heidegger took over the leading insights of each of these thinkers translating them into his own idiom. In respect of Kierkegaard it shall be shown that the key to his critical stance to his received tradition lay in his concept of truth as inwardness, a view he developed in his early work on Socrates. It shall be argued in subsequent chapters that whilst this view of truth can be seen as having a formative influence on Heidegger's work, it is one that has been mediated by Heidegger 's reading of Nietzsche. In respect of this influence it is the purpose of this chapter to sketch out Nietzsche's critical stance towards the traditional concept of truth wherein his influence on Heidegger can be seen to have issued. In this respect we shall see that contrary to Kierkegaard's work, Nietzsche's critique is one that is problematic from the outset. The purpose of the account of his work is then to simply indicate the task for thinking that Nietzsche's problematic genealogy set for his successors. In chapters two and three an account will be given showing how Heidegger's thought can be seen to have taken up the challenge set by both Kierkegaard and Nietzsche in formulating his account of truth as aletheia - as inwardness in the absence of an absolute

Developments and key issues in tourism mobilities

    Get PDF
This paper examines key developments in recent tourism mobilities research. It begins by outlining the recent conceptualisation of tourism mobilities, arguing that it is not just that tourism is a form of mobility like other forms of mobility but that different mobilities inform and are informed by tourism. It then examines work which has been developed in terms of materialities, autmobilities and new technologies. It concludes by discussing mobile methodologies and some thoughts on future research directions

Unsung heroes: Constituency election agents in British general elections

    Get PDF
Despite their central role in the electoral process, constituency agents have been largely overlooked by political scientists and this article seeks to rectify the omission. It sketches the origins and development of the role of agent from the late 19th century and suggests that a serious rethink of the role took place in the 1990s. Survey-based evidence about the social characteristics of agents is presented confirming that they are largely middle-aged, middle-class, well-educated men. They are also becoming more experienced, offer realistic assessments of the impact of constituency campaigning and, arguably, many take a long-term view of how their party's support can be maximised

Previously Claimed(/Unclaimed) X-ray Emission Lines in High Resolution Afterglow Spectra

We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM data for GRB011211 and GRB030227. We find that these features are likely of modest, though not negligible, significance.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figures, to appear in Santa Fe GRB Conference Proceedings, 200

Chandra Observations of the Optically Dark GRB030528

    Get PDF
The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528. The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the X-ray source. The X-ray spectrum is not consistent with a large absorbing column.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figures, to appear in Santa Fe GRB Conference Proceedings, 200

    Fluorine abundances in planetary nebulae

We have determined fluorine abundances from the F II 4789 and F IV 4060 nebular emission lines for a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). Our results show that fluorine is generally overabundant in PNe, thus providing new evidence for the synthesis of fluorine in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. [F/O] is found to be positively correlated with the C/O abundance ratio, in agreement with the predictions of theoretical models of fluorine production in thermally pulsing AGB stars. A large enhancement of fluorine is observed in the Wolf-Rayet PN NGC 40, suggesting that high mass-loss rates probably favor the survival of fluorine.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Optical and X-ray Observations of the Afterglow to XRF030723

The X-ray-flash XRF030723 was detected by the HETE satellite and rapidly disseminated, allowing for an optical transient to be detected ~1 day after the burst. We discuss observations in the optical with Magellan, which confirmed the fade of the optical transient. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source spatially coincident with the optical transient. We present spectral fits to the X-ray data. We also discuss the possibility that the source underwent a rebrightening in the X-rays, as was observed in the optical. We find that the significance of a possible rebrightening is very low (~1 sigma).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Santa Fe GRB Conference Proceedings, 200

Removal of terrestrial DOC in aquatic ecosystems of a temperate river network

    Get PDF
Surface waters play a potentially important role in the global carbon balance. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes are a major transfer of terrestrial carbon to river systems, and the fate of DOC in aquatic systems is poorly constrained. We used a unique combination of spatially distributed sampling of three DOC fractions throughout a river network and modeling to quantify the net removal of terrestrial DOC during a summer base flow period. We found that aquatic reactivity of terrestrial DOC leading to net loss is low, closer to conservative chloride than to reactive nitrogen. Net removal occurred mainly from the hydrophobic organic acid fraction, while hydrophilic and transphilic acids showed no net change, indicating that partitioning of bulk DOC into different fractions is critical for understanding terrestrial DOC removal. These findings suggest that river systems may have only a modest ability to alter the amounts of terrestrial DOC delivered to coastal zones

    Dissipation in nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators

    Get PDF
We have measured the dissipation and frequency of nanocrystalline-diamond nanomechanical resonators with resonant frequencies between 13.7 MHz and 157.3 MHz, over a temperature range of 1.4–274 K. Using both magnetomotive network analysis and a time-domain ring-down technique, we have found the dissipation in this material to have a temperature dependence roughly following T^(0.2), with Q^(–1) ≈ 10^(–4) at low temperatures. The frequency dependence of a large dissipation feature at ~35–55 K is consistent with thermal activation over a 0.02 eV barrier with an attempt frequency of 10 GHz
