A NASA/RAE cooperation in the development of a real-time knowledge-based autopilot
As part of a US/UK cooperative aeronautical research program, a joint activity between the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility and the Royal Aerospace Establishment on knowledge-based systems was established. This joint activity is concerned with tools and techniques for the implementation and validation of real-time knowledge-based systems. The proposed next stage of this research is described, in which some of the problems of implementing and validating a knowledge-based autopilot for a generic high-performance aircraft are investigated
Optical Cleanliness Measurement Methods for Aluminium Sheet Surfaces
Special Issue: Proceedings 8th Symposium “Aluminium Surface Science and Technology”. The authors wish to thank Innoval Technology Ltd. for permission to publish this work. The cleaning of rolled aluminium surfaces is of critical importance for most applications and is of particular importance in automotive applications. The cleanliness of the sheet surface is mainly determined by the residual amount of the near-surface deformed layer on the alloy surface. This layer has nano-sized grains with their grain boundaries decorated and pinned by oxide particles and lubricant residues. The deformed layer reduces the reflectivity of the sheet or strip surface to visible light, particularly in the short wavelength range, resulting in a brownish appearance. Based on the optical characteristics of the deformed layer, the use of optical microscopy, spectrophotometry, and colourimetry has been evaluated to provide a quantitative measurement of the level of cleanliness. These latter evaluations have been cross-checked by using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy on ultramicrotomed cross sections of aluminium sheet samples subjected to different level of cleaning to determine the amount of residual near-surface deformed layer
Housing Intervention and Neighbourhood Development: Harnessing Change in West Broadway
During the period leading to the early 1990s the West Broadway area of inner city Winnipeg experienced many signs of neighbourhood decline, such as residential fires, housing abandonment and structural deterioration. From the mid 1990s considerable amounts of volunteer energy, public funding and philanthropic resources were devoted to turning the neighbourhood around, focusing efforts through community development, employment training, arts programs, housing upgrading and other themes. Many individuals and organizations combined their capabilities in the attempt to create an inclusive and diverse community.
The study Housing Intervention and Neighbourhood Development was grounded in the need to take stock of changes in the neighbourhood and to relate these to knowledge of the nature of neighbourhood change. It was intended that this would enable an informed assessment of whether dynamics such as gentrification, disinvestment and stabilization appear to be in operation in parts of the neighbourhood. This assessment, in turn, would support discussion of strategies that could be implemented to help guide how the neighbourhood would unfold
Crossing the Brown Dwarf Desert Using Adaptive Optics: A Very Close L-Dwarf Companion to the Nearby Solar Analog HR 7672
We have found a very faint companion to the active solar analog HR 7672 (HD
190406; GJ 779; 15 Sge). Three epochs of high resolution imaging using adaptive
optics (AO) at the Gemini-North and Keck II Telescopes demonstrate that HR
7672B is a common proper motion companion, with a separation of 0.79" (14 AU)
and a 2.16 um flux ratio of 8.6 mags. Using follow-up K-band spectroscopy from
Keck AO+NIRSPEC, we measure a spectral type of L4.5+/-1.5. This is the closest
ultracool companion around a main sequence star found to date by direct
imaging. We estimate the primary has an age of 1-3 Gyr. Assuming coevality, the
companion is most likely substellar, with a mass of 55-78 Mjup based on
theoretical models. The primary star shows a long-term radial velocity trend,
and we combine the radial velocity data and AO imaging to set a firm
(model-independent) lower limit of 48 Mjup. In contrast to the paucity of brown
dwarf companions at <~4 AU around FGK dwarfs, HR 7672B implies that brown dwarf
companions do exist at separations comparable to those of the giant planets in
our own solar system. Its presence is at variance with scenarios where brown
dwarfs form as ejected stellar embryos. Moreover, since HR 7672B is likely too
massive to have formed in a circumstellar disk as planets are believed to, its
discovery suggests that a diversity of physical processes act to populate the
outer regions of exoplanetary systems.Comment: Astrophysical Journal, in pres
Towards automatic code generation of run-time power management for embedded systems using formal methods
Coastal flooding and frontline health care services: challenges for flood risk resilience in the English health care system.
Objectives Our objective was to assess the health care system impacts associated with the December 2013 east coast flooding in Boston, Lincolnshire, in order to gain an insight into the capacity of the health care sector to respond to high-impact weather. Methods Semistructured interviews were held with regional strategic decision makers and local service managers within 1 km of the recorded flood outline to ascertain their experiences, views and reflections concerning the event and its associated health impacts and disruption to health care services. A snowballing sampling technique was used to ensure the study had participants across a broad range of expertise. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and data analysis was preformed using NVivo (v10) to apply a thematic coding and develop a framework of ideas. Results The results of this case study provide a vital insight into the health care disruption caused by flooding. All sectors of the health care system suffered disruption, which placed a strain on the whole system and reduced the capacity of the sector to respond to the health consequences of flooding and delivering routine health care. The formal recovery phase in Lincolnshire was stood-down on 4th February 2014. The results of this work indicate limitations in preparedness of the health care system for the reasonable worse-case scenario for an east coast surge event. Conclusions The health care sector appears to have limited capacity to respond to weather-related impacts and is therefore unprepared for the risks associated with a future changing climate. Further work is required to ensure that the health care system continues to review and learn from such events to increase climate resilience. </jats:sec
An Optically Dark GRB Observed by HETE-2: GRB 051022
GRB 051022 was detected at 13:07:58 on 22 October 2005 by HETE-2. The
location of GRB 051022 was determined immediately by the flight localization
system. This burst contains multiple pulses and has a rather long duration of
about 190 seconds. The detections of candidate X-ray and radio afterglows were
reported, whereas no optical afterglow was found. The optical spectroscopic
observations of the host galaxy revealed the redshift z = 0.8. Using the data
derived by HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission, we found the absorption
N_H = 8.8 -2.9/+3.1 x 10^22 cm^-2 and the visual extinction A_V = 49 -16/+17
mag in the host galaxy. If this is the case, no detection of any optical
transient would be quite reasonable. The absorption derived by the Swift XRT
observations of the afterglow is fully consistent with those obtained from the
early HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission. Our analysis implies an
interpretation that the absorbing medium could be outside external shock at R ~
10^16 cm, which may be a dusty molecular cloud.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ lette

The N2K Consortium. I. A Hot Saturn Planet Orbiting HD 88133
The N2K ("next 2000") consortium is carrying out a distributed observing campaign with the Keck, Magellan, and Subaru telescopes, as well as the automatic photometric telescopes of Fairborn Observatory, in order to search for short-period gas giant planets around metal-rich stars. We have established a reservoir of more than 14,000 main-sequence and subgiant stars closer than 110 pc, brighter than V = 10.5, and with 0.4 0.1 dex for this survey. We outline the strategy and report the detection of a planet orbiting the metal-rich G5 IV star HD 88133 with a period of 3.41 days, semivelocity amplitude K = 35.7 m s^(-1), and M sin i = 0.29M_J. Photometric observations reveal that HD 88133 is constant on the 3.415 day radial velocity period to a limit of 0.0005 mag. Despite a transit probability of 19.5%, our photometry rules out the shallow transits predicted by the large stellar radius
Honneth, Butler and the Ambivalent Effects of Recognition
This paper examines the ambivalent effects of recognition by critically examining Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. I argue that his underlying perfectionist account and his focus on the psychic effects of recognition cause him to misrepresent or overlook significant connections between recognition and power. These claims are substantiated by (1) drawing from Butler’s theory of gender performativity, power and recognition; and (2) exploring issues arising from the socio-institutional recognition of trans identities. I conclude by suggesting that certain problems with Butler’s own position can corrected by drawing more from the Foucauldian aspects of her work. I claim that this is the most promising way to conceptualise recognition and its complex, ambivalent effects
