    Contrasting sexual selection on males and females in a role-reversed swarming dance-fly, Rhamphomyia longicauda Loew (Diptera: Empididae)

    Sex-specific ornamentation is widely known among male animals, but even among sex-role reversed species, ornamented females are rare. Although several hypotheses for this pattern exist, too few systems featuring female ornaments have been studied in detail to adequately test them. Empidine dance flies are exceptional in that many species show female ornamentation of wings, abdomens, or legs. Here we compare sexual selection in males and females of the long-tailed dance fly, Rhamphomyia longicauda Loew (Diptera: Empididae), a sex-role reversed fly in which swarming females aggregate in competition for the nuptial gifts provided by males during mating. Females in this species possess several secondary sex characters, including eversible abdominal sacs, enlarged wings, and decorated tibiae that may all function in mate attraction during swarming. Males preferentially approach large females in the swarm, but the strength and shape of selection on females and the degree to which selection is sex-specific are unknown. We estimated linear and nonlinear sexual selection on structures expressed in both male and female flies, and found contrasting patterns of sexual selection on wing length and tibia length in males and females. In females, long wings and short tibiae were associated with mating success, whereas selection on males was significantly different: males with short wings and long tibiae were most likely to mate (although tibia length was a marginally non-significant predictor of male mating success). We found no evidence for assortative or disassortative mating. Although the largest females occupied positions within the swarm closest to the entry point for choosy males, in contrast to selection for mating success these females tended to have larger tibiae than rivals. We discuss our findings in the context of the mating biology of R. longicauda compared to other empidine dance flies, and its relevance to the evolution of sexual dimorphism in general

    Sexual Selection for Male Mobility in a Giant Insect with Female‐Biased Size Dimorphism

    Female-biased size dimorphism in which females are larger than males is prevalent in many animals, but the factors causing this pattern of dimorphism are still poorly understood. The agility hypothesis suggests that female-biased size dimorphism arises because smaller males are favoured in scramble competition for mates. Using radio telemetry, we assessed the agility hypothesis in the Cook Strait giant weta (Deinacrida rugosa), a species with strong female-biased size dimorphism, and tested the prediction that male traits promoting mobility (i.e. longer legs, smaller bodies) are useful in scramble competition for mates and thus promote reproductive success. Our predictions were supported: males with longer legs and smaller bodies exhibited greater mobility (daily linear displacement when not mating) and more mobile males had greater insemination success. No phenotypic traits predicted female mobility or insemination success. In species with female-biased size dimorphism, sexual selection on males is often considered to be weak compared to species in which males are large and/or possess weaponry. We found that male giant weta experience sexual selection intensities on par with males of a closely related harem-defending polygynous species, likely because of strong scramble competition with other males

    The role of functional constraints in nonrandom mating patterns for a dance fly with female ornaments

    Most hypotheses to explain non‐random mating patterns invoke mate choice, particularly in species that display elaborate ornaments. However, conflicting selection pressures on traits can result in functional constraints that can also cause non‐random mating patterns. We tested for functional load‐lifting constraints during aerial copulation in Rhamphomyia longicauda, a species of dance fly that displays multiple extravagant female‐specific ornaments that are unusual among sexual traits because they are under stabilizing selection. R. longicauda males provide females with a nuptial gift before engaging in aerial mating, and the male bears the entire weight of the female and nuptial gift for the duration of copulation. In theory, a male's ability to carry females and nuptial gifts could constrain pairing opportunities for the heaviest females, as reported for non‐ornamented dance flies. In concert with directional preferences for large females with mature eggs, such a load‐lifting constraint could produce the stabilizing selection on female size previously observed in this species. We therefore tested whether wild‐caught male R. longicauda collected during copulation were experiencing load‐lift limitations by comparing the mass carried by males during copulation with the male's wing loading traits. We also performed permutation tests to determine whether the loads carried by males during copulation were lighter than expected. We found that heavier males are more often found mating with heavier females suggesting that while R. longicauda males do not experience a load‐lift constraint, there is a strong relationship of assortative mating by mass. We suggest that active male mate choice for intermediately adorned females is more likely to be causing the non‐random mating patterns observed in R. longicauda

    Political institutions and debt crises

    This paper shows that political institutions matter in explaining defaults on external and domestic debt obligations. We explore a large number of political and macroeconomic variables using a non-parametric technique to predict safety from default. The advantage of this technique is that it is able to identify patterns in the data that are not captured in standard probit analysis. We find that political factors matter, and do so in different ways for democratic and non-democratic regimes, and for domestic and external debt. In democracies, a parliamentary system or sufficient checks and balances almost guarantee the absence of default on external debt when economic fundamentals or liquidity are sufficiently strong. In dictatorships, high stability and tenure play a similar role for default on domestic debt

    High-temperature integrated and flexible ultrasonic transducers for nondestructive testing

    Integrated ultrasonic transducers (IUTs) and flexible ultrasonic transducers (FUTs) are presented for nondestructive testing at high temperatures. These transducers are made of sol-gel-sprayed piezoelectric thick (>40 \ub5m) ceramic films. The ceramic materials are lead-zirconate-titanate, bismuth titanate and lithium niobate which are for thickness measurements up to 150, 400 and 800\ub0C, respectively. The IUT can also be deposited onto one end of a long ultrasonic delay line to perform nondestructive testing at the other end at even higher temperatures. FUTs made of bismuth titanate films onto thin stainless steel foils are also used for thickness measurements at 300\ub0C with a high-temperature couplant sandwiched between the FUT and a steel substrate. All experiments at high temperatures were performed in pulse-echo mode and ultrasonic echoes with signal-to-noise ratios above 20 dB were obtained.     Dilepton production in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies

    We present a unified description of the vector meson and dilepton production in elementary and in heavy ion reactions. The production of vector mesons (ρ,ω\rho,\omega) is described via the excitation of nuclear resonances (RR). The theoretical framework is an extended vector meson dominance model (eVMD). The treatment of the resonance decays R⟌NVR\longmapsto NV with arbitrary spin is covariant and kinematically complete. The eVMD includes thereby excited vector meson states in the transition form factors. This ensures correct asymptotics and provides a unified description of photonic and mesonic decays. The resonance model is successfully applied to the ω\omega production in p+pp+p reactions. The same model is applied to the dilepton production in elementary reactions (p+p,p+dp+p, p+d). Corresponding data are well reproduced. However, when the model is applied to heavy ion reactions in the BEVALAC/SIS energy range the experimental dilepton spectra measured by the DLS Collaboration are significantly underestimated at small invariant masses. As a possible solution of this problem the destruction of quantum interference in a dense medium is discussed. A decoherent emission through vector mesons decays enhances the corresponding dilepton yield in heavy ion reactions. In the vicinity of the ρ/ω\rho/\omega-peak the reproduction of the data requires further a substantial collisional broadening of the ρ\rho and in particular of the ω\omega meson.Comment: 32 pages revtex, 19 figures, to appear in PR

    The dependence of the anomalous J/psi suppression on the number of participant nucleons

    The observation of an anomalous J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions by the NA50 Collaboration can be considered as the most striking indication for the deconfinement of quarks and gluons at SPS energies. In this Letter, we determine the J/psi suppression pattern as a function of the forward hadronic energy E-ZDC measured in a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC). The direct connection between EZDC and the geometry of the collision allows us to calculate, within a Glauber approach, the precise relation between the number of participant nucleons N-part and E-ZDC. Then, we check if the experimental data can be better explained by a sudden or a smooth onset of the anomalous J/psi suppression as a function of the number of participants.     Centrality Behaviour of J/ψ\psi Production in Na50

    The J/ψ\psi production in 158 A GeV Pb-Pb interactions is studied, in the dimuon decay channel, as a function of centrality, as measured with the electromagnetic or with the very forward calorimeters. After a first sharp variation at mid centrality, both patterns continue to fall down and exhibit a curvature change at high centrality values. This trend excludes any conventional hadronic model and is in agreement with a deconfined quark-gluon phase scenario.     S100A7, a Novel Alzheimer's Disease Biomarker with Non-Amyloidogenic α-Secretase Activity Acts via Selective Promotion of ADAM-10

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia among older people. At present, there is no cure for the disease and as of now there are no early diagnostic tests for AD. There is an urgency to develop a novel promising biomarker for early diagnosis of AD. Using surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry SELDI-(MS) proteomic technology, we identified and purified a novel 11.7-kDa metal- binding protein biomarker whose content is increased in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and in the brain of AD dementia subjects as a function of clinical dementia. Following purification and protein-sequence analysis, we identified and classified this biomarker as S100A7, a protein known to be involved in immune responses. Using an adenoviral-S100A7 expression system, we continued to examine the potential role of S100A7 in AD amyloid neuropathology in in vitro model of AD. We found that the expression of exogenous S100A7 in primary cortico-hippocampal neuron cultures derived from Tg2576 transgenic embryos inhibits the generation of ÎČ-amyloid (AÎČ)1–42 and AÎČ1–40 peptides, coincidental with a selective promotion of “non- amyloidogenic” α-secretase activity via promotion of ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase)-10. Finally, a selective expression of human S100A7 in the brain of transgenic mice results in significant promotion of α-secretase activity. Our study for the first time suggests that S100A7 may be a novel biomarker of AD dementia and supports the hypothesis that promotion of S100A7 expression in the brain may selectively promote α-secretase activity in the brain of AD precluding the generation of amyloidogenic peptides. If in the future we find that S1000A7 protein content in CSF is sensitive to drug intervention experimentally and eventually in the clinical setting, S100A7 might be developed as novel surrogate index (biomarker) of therapeutic efficacy in the characterization of novel drug agents for the treatment of AD

    A Novel Statistical Algorithm for Gene Expression Analysis Helps Differentiate Pregnane X Receptor-Dependent and Independent Mechanisms of Toxicity

    Genome-wide gene expression profiling has become standard for assessing potential liabilities as well as for elucidating mechanisms of toxicity of drug candidates under development. Analysis of microarray data is often challenging due to the lack of a statistical model that is amenable to biological variation in a small number of samples. Here we present a novel non-parametric algorithm that requires minimal assumptions about the data distribution. Our method for determining differential expression consists of two steps: 1) We apply a nominal threshold on fold change and platform p-value to designate whether a gene is differentially expressed in each treated and control sample relative to the averaged control pool, and 2) We compared the number of samples satisfying criteria in step 1 between the treated and control groups to estimate the statistical significance based on a null distribution established by sample permutations. The method captures group effect without being too sensitive to anomalies as it allows tolerance for potential non-responders in the treatment group and outliers in the control group. Performance and results of this method were compared with the Significant Analysis of Microarrays (SAM) method. These two methods were applied to investigate hepatic transcriptional responses of wild-type (PXR+/+) and pregnane X receptor-knockout (PXR−/−) mice after 96 h exposure to CMP013, an inhibitor of ÎČ-secretase (ÎČ-site of amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 or BACE1). Our results showed that CMP013 led to transcriptional changes in hallmark PXR-regulated genes and induced a cascade of gene expression changes that explained the hepatomegaly observed only in PXR+/+ animals. Comparison of concordant expression changes between PXR+/+ and PXR−/− mice also suggested a PXR-independent association between CMP013 and perturbations to cellular stress, lipid metabolism, and biliary transport
